Tragic choices
by Mahmoud Sadri
07-Jun-2009

The word tragedy, derived from the ancient Greek words for goat (tragos) and song (aedien), invokes the creature’s plaintive cries.  The cacophony of confused voices – on the streets, in the media and in campaign debates and jingles – surrounding Iran’s upcoming Presidential elections bring to mind the term’s origins.  Iran’s post revolutionary regime, described by such paradoxical terms as “theocratic democracy” and “dual government” is the cause of the Iranian voters’ vows.

The country’s electoral process, while working well in the middle, featuring hard-fought contests and hard-won votes, is rigged on both ends: candidates have to be vetted by unelected bodies before they can run for office and, once elected, they are kept from setting defense and foreign policy, privileges allotted to the unelected office of the “supreme leader.”

One wonders why Iranians would bother to vote in a system in which the dice are so flagrantly loaded against democratic choice.  Many Iranians, wondering the same thing, stayed home in great numbers during the last election season.  Then they had to stand by and watch Mahmoud Ahmadinejad triumphantly walk into the presidential palace.  Now clamoring for “anybody but Ahmadinejad” they are driven back into the fold of the same flawed system that encourages voting but yields little beyond the ability to avoid the worst alternatives.

The systemic restrictions on the emergence of genuine electoral choices have turned the Iranian elections into a recycling, rather than a circulation, of elites. In a country in which more than half (%50.3) of the population is under the age of 25, the average age of the four Presidential candidates, all high officials from the previous governments, is 60.5.  Nevertheless, the June 12th election offers real alternatives ranging from unsavory to unbearable.

On the conservative side, President Ahmadinejad, the astute populist who blindsided and defeated his seasoned rivals in the previous election, continues to stay in the public eye, thanks to his instinct for rabble rousing.  In a recent display of his demagogic skills he added another catastrophe to the list of the historical calamities he denies: The United States, he asserted, alleges great loss of human lives during the 9/11 attacks but it has never published the list of the casualties.  Such conspiratorial absurdities, while angering the informed and educated Iranians, earn him support on the street.

The president’s conservative rival, Mohsen Reza’i’s sole claim to fame is his leadership of the “Revolutionary Guards” corps during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) that expanded a legitimate two- year defensive war into an inglorious eight-year fratricide.    Had he been running for office in another country, perhaps he could have touted his business acumen in retirement that includes, among other things, a chain of fast food joints.  But in Iran leaders are expected to display conspicuous austerity: eating simple meals, driving beat-up cars, and sporting dull wardrobes.  Reza’i’s fortress-palace in the vicinity of Tehran is not likely to win him votes.

On the opposition side, the dispirited and divided reform movement has failed to nominate a robust candidate who could survive the vetting process and has instead thrown its support behind two candidates.  The more prominent one, Mir Hossein Mousavi, an architect by trade, is a former Prime Minister (1981-1989) who has never been associated with the reform movement and doesn’t even pretend to represent the reform platform.  He simply accepts its endorsement.  He remained silent, almost forgotten, during the tumultuous reform period (1997-2005) reading and painting in his self- imposed seclusion in Tehran.

The resurgent Mousavi’s selling point is that he is, now, the same honest manager he was two decades ago.  No wonder his campaign relies so heavily on the element of nostalgia.  The fact that he has not defended or revised his statist economic policies and diplomatic failures during the dismal war years has rendered his criticism of Ahmadinejad’s rule susceptible to rebuttals.

The other reform candidate, Mehdi Karroubi, the former Speaker of the parliament (2000-2004) is distinguished by the courage he displayed in visiting the political prisoners and their families during his tenure as the Speaker.  Even now, he is the only candidate who dares to hint at the necessity of revising Iran’s constitution: the regime’s Achilles’ heel and the root cause of Iran’s political malaise.  However, Karroubi also stood by as his reform-dominated parliament, trying to usher in meaningful change in civil liberties, was stymied by the clerical establishment in the notorious case of the “Revision of the Media Act”.  Thus Karroubi – his episodic bravery and candor notwithstanding – is at least partly responsible for the failure of the reform movement.

The choice on June 12th, however, while unpalatable, will be consequential for a modicum of prosperity and security for Iran during the next decade.    It is a sign of these chaotic times that Iranian secular and reform intellectuals exchange barbs over the relative virtues of Mousavi versus Karroubi. Recently the foremost Iranian novelist, Mahmoud Dolatabadi, gave a rambling speech in a pro-Mousavi rally, chiding the foremost Iranian reform political philosopher, Abdolkarim Soroush for his support of Karroubi.  Soroush responded with a caustic reprove.

But the imperative of “anybody but Ahmadinejad” must not be allowed to be drowned out in the orgy of undisciplined free speech and partisan bickering.  A consolidation of the conservative camp is likely.  A divided reform vote may hand Ahmadinejad yet another victory. Now that would be a tragedy in every sense of the term.

Shokooh, you're spot on.

by Ostaad on

Reading your piece made me to look up the definition of "intellectual" on the Webster dictionary to refresh my memory of what it really meant.
You said it all, girlfriend.

Fortunately, the "most important intelletual couple" have headed for the garbage bag of history, and I suspect we are not going to hear from them for a long time.

Regarding your critic of Mrs. Rahnavard's books and her political views, I found your criticism fair, precise and thougtful. I really enjoyed reading it.

I encourage you to register and post many more pieces on this site.

شکوه میرزادگی (not verified)

Mullah Misinformation

Babbakkhoramdin --

Don't mind these disgustingly deceptive Islamic Republic employees (Kurush, Daruish, funny how they all have pre-Islamic names). Whenever they get cornered on the issues and have no leg to stand on, they bring up "Dr. Mossedegh" and the 1953 coup, the CIA or Mossad or Israel or GW Bush, etc., in order to incite our emotions.

Mind you, these Islamists despised (and still do) despise Mossadegh (didn't they change the name of Mossadegh Blvd to Vali Asr immediately after they got control of the revolution), but they know full well that the mere utterance of the name "Mossadegh" conjures up an emotional connection to a moment of historical humiliation of Iran at the hands of the west, primarily England -- but Islamists are backed and financed by England, so they convieniently substitute England with the "Great Satan," America.

It's utterly disgusting how these petty Islamists invoke the name of Mossadegh just to get us aboard their hatred (of America) bus. Mind you, it was the Islamists, led by that charlatan, ayatollah Kashani, who took money from the CIA to destroy Mossadegh (ever heard of "Behbahani Dollars," as in ayatollah Behbahani and CIA dollars!). It was the famous "Behbahani dollars" that greased the palms of Shaban Bimokh and his ilk back in the summer of 1953.

These Islamist are simply and purely disgusting, with no moral virtues to speak of. They will say and do ANYTHING to stay in power, even if it means protesting the downfall of a man who they helpled bring down!

Kurush

The most naive and utterly shameless statement that could ever, in the history of all debates that have even been conducted on this threat, has just been released by you. You put your stamp of approval on pure Fascism and Murder of innocent people and named talin and MAo and Khomeini amongst the best leaders of the world, Based merely
on their old age! ALL to deny a poorly understood premise of the argument the author was making.
It does not take a genius to figure out that stability is indeed one big factor in having a productive economy. It is so obvious that Iran's economy has been on a downward scale since he became the president that no amount of whitewashing can disguise that fact. A bunch of fancy looking Graphs presented in TV debate series, will not change this fact.

I wish you would take the time to list for us some of those intelligent persons! Unless we have highly variable definitions of the word "intelligent" All the comments and analyses that i have heard so far, on the topic of western democracy, was nothing but praise and admiration.

We will get into Our heads what we absolutely must, in its due time. But you will be doing all of us a huge favor by drilling and securing certain facts inside your head as well such as (please go back and read at least some of the comments on this threat regarding the election) that iranian-americans can not be excluded from being a part of the iranian population, because You would like to make that call. Being iranian and loving iran is in one's heart and has nothing to do with the location and whether one lives in iran or not.

You made the claim that:

"Why no one realizes that we are not going to have democracy in the next 5-10 years, but an on going drive to gain what we deserve"

What qualifies you to make such a claim, as if you know for a fact what it is that we really deserve? Have you rightfully earned the title of the iranian people's spokesperson? Have you ever thought about the main factor and element that is preventing us from reaching democracy?
I hope to god that you are right and that the IRI is indeed Changing. A lot of people have been praying for that to happen. Changing= Disappearing.

Just because iranians in iran have no say on the significance of who wins The US preseidential elections. does not mean they do not care, since they know too well that every little moves that the elected president makes, has such a huge impact on the future of the Middle east and Iran.

Iranian-americans have NOT accepted anything about the IRI. They are only showing support because they know that the elections result will undeniably have some impacts on the daily lives of their relatives who live in iran. That is a conditional compromise, not a total acceptance.

BTW, what is the pay-rate for IRI agents nowadays?
I am just curious. I am looking for a better job. You know, Always have to have a plan to fall back on.

who do you the akhoonds are working for????!
you think these mullahs came to and have stayed in power on their own???!!!
These vultures and thieves are fully backed and instructed by the british and the russians.
And what about carter sending over Huyser to eliminate the imperial army and ordering the assasination of badrei and other "dangerous" generals? No way in hell, that khomeini or the rest of thugs would have survived if the army was unleashed. You're blaming the shah as an american stooge, but the mullahs have stolen TRILLIONS of dollars worth of oil money and stuffed their pockets or given it to arab terrorists abroad. who do u think burned down cinema rex and those poor souls inside??? u still think it was savak?!....it's been clearly proven that it was the work of khamenei and the mullahs.
so don't call antarinejad as the right man for iran, because, he and the rest of the akhoonds belong at the bottom of hell for their crimes against iran and it's people

You Are So Gullible!!!

by Kurush (not verified) on

The author complains about Iran’s political processes, vettings, recycling etc. One wonders on what planet he has been living or what he has learned from history. It is a human flaw, if not a vice, to ignore blithely the lessons of history. A literate person never quibbles with facts of history which might betray ignorance & lack of critical thinking.
Was not during the open elections of the early 1950’s that the evolving Iranian democratic institutions were perverted & subverted by the Western thugs? Is it not a FACT, well-established, that the Americans & the British exploited the open democratic & relatively balanced electoral processes & forces, an equilibrium in which the vying political forces & their agents pursued their goals equitably, to decapitate the legitimate nationalist government of Dr. Mossadegh & to install a puppet which ruled for a quarter of century and served the geo-political & economic goals of his Western masters? Given that historical fact how can anyone in his/her right mind demand a completely open democratic process and expose yet again our great nation to the depravity of the Western thugs who are literally at the doorsteps of our great country (Iraq, Afghanistan & the Persian Gulf bases)? Would it not be completely foolish and downright unwise to throw open the doors of Iran’s government hoping that perhaps, perhaps, just perhaps, the Western thugs would behave with civility this time around?! The operative word is ‘evolution’ in Iran’s civic society and democratic processes: So long as there is Western bases literally encircling Iran & poised to attack at any moment, it would the height of stupidity to demand a completely open election process in which any one can stand for the office of the President of Iran? Was it not that American thug, Kermit Roosevelt, who carried suitcases full of US dollars in the days before the 1953 coup (to bribe & corrupt the election),- a coup which denied Iran a democratic government and stunted the growth of Iran’s democratic institutions for quarter of a century? So the author proposes an open election, a feel--good election, but does he bother to give us the name of the Western agents who would most certainly be carrying suitcases loaded with money to yet again pervert the Iranian democratic aspirations? Have we not learnt our lesson? And why not?
The authors stipulation that since Iran’s population is youthful, therefore its leadership must be young as well smacks of utter immaturity of critical thinking. Since when a ‘young’ populations is coupled with young leadership? Is that a principle of US/British ‘color’ revolutions, orange, blue, etc. Some of the best leaders in history were quite old, Roosevelt, Churchill, Reagan, Stalin, Mao, Khomeini. Does the author sees some virtue in young leadership that I do not see? Is political leadership of a nation defined in terms of Rock &Roll, 20- something criteria?!! It is an undeniable truth, a sad one, that Iran's youths, due to lack of a coherent & mature cluture are very much prone to impetuous & rash behaviour, precisely the type of psychology that the Western thugs depend on to destablise Iran through pschological warfare directed at this immature young rash segement of Iran's civic society. That is indeed Iran's Achilles' Heels & is being exploited to the hilt by the Western intelligence services, the CIA & MI6.
Finally, Ahmadinejad has been the right man at the right time for Iran. When the Western thugs began saber-rattling , he stood firm and gave them the middle finger and said, not in so many words, F*** YOU!
With chaos raging on the very doorsteps of our deer country, he is managed the country with firm hand. He knows one fact that all PhD economists know nothing about ( let alone write a ‘scholarly’ paper about), namely, the prerequisite for a vibrant, vigorous, long-lasting economic growth is STABILITY. Iran’s enemies, internal & external, very much would like to deprive Iran of such stability & the consequent economic growth and prosperity. If re-elected, Ahmadinejad would pursue the nuclear option for Iran for sheer deterrent reasons, and would guarantee Iran’s economic miracle. My Vote goes to Ahmadinejad

The Islamic Republic of Iran. The great government of the nation

by Mashty (not verified) on

Except those "az maa behtarun" who think in the Western Media box. Those so called Western minded Iranians don't understand the simplest procedures that the Western nations took in order to arrive to democracy. They are just show. That's why you rarely see an intelligent person who is well read agree with them.

I don't understand why (those) people don't get it that the government of no nation will just change just because. We need to participate.
Why no one realizes that we are not going to have democracy in the next 5-10 years, but an on going drive to gain what we deserve. Not what one deserves, what we as a nation deserve.
We will not have democracy the way some want a government to come and give them beer and let girls dress however.
We will have our own made government that will evolve to satisfy what our own people decide what values are dear, not the west nor the (those) Iranian Americans. Get that to your head for once, then you'll understand.

The Islamic Republic is changing. Are you on denial?
Join the Iranian nation and become part of the movement forward. We, only we will decide.

(It's like those who live in Iran and when asked, they say, what's the difference who will be the president of the US. Because they live far and little things don't matter to them. The (Those) Iranian Americans have the exact same symptoms, Of course only very small population of them. Most Iranian Americans have accepted the Islamic Republic and are willing to work within the framework of the law of the land. In the long run, all those laws will change that is not pro Iranian nation as a whole. Because we own the land now, not the West)

Salute to the Islamic Republic of Iran and those who understand Iran.

I have to agree with Fred, in part!!!

by Mehrban on

There is an incredible lack of attention to basic economic and political principals from the "reformist" camp.  They are insistent on reinventing the wheel from the fear of being labeled westernized.  They insist that the laissez faire (to the Islamic Republic) through evolutionary forces will eventually get us there. I hate to say it but it will not unless "there" is ruin.

I hope that AhmadiNejad is not reelected. But I fear that the structural organization of the Islamic Republic, Vali Fagih and neumerous other Rohaniyoon not to speak of the emerging power of Sepaah who while unqualified, need to be consistantly apheased by the President will render any President powerless in substantive matters.  The present system is clogged by people in positions they have no business being in.

The Islamic Republic, in its present format, is structurally flawed to run a modern nation regardless of who is the President.

Thank you for the article.

Playing with loaded dice

by Fred on

While reading this concise write-up one feels the urge to yell out Eureka, Eureka, at long last, at least one Islamist has got it. This essay gives the reader who is not suffering from selective memory high hopes that even card carrying Islamists are susceptible to deductive reasoning based on simple observation and learning lessons from their mistakes.

Alas the euphoria comes to a screeching stop in the last two paragraphs. The Islamist is advocating participation in an “election” in which he just got finished nullifying its legitimacy and utility.

At the same time that the Islamist rattles off just a sampling of the “candidates’” wrongdoings, he keeps mum on the many skeletons in the closet of his Islamist guru who he labels as “”the foremost Iranian reform political philosopher, Abdolkarim Soroush”.

His “foremost” was the architect and executioner of the Cultural Revolution with its devastating aftershocks still reverberating throughout the entire Iranian intelligentsia. The Islamist democracy oxymoron did not, does not and as long as logic matters, will not work. And if “the foremost” has the current state of affairs to show as the result of his “reform political” philosophizing, could he please put a cork in it for it ain’t helping.

The “reform” minded Islamists are habitual gamblers who having started with a set of loaded dice have lost everything (nothing of their own) and yet  by putting up the Iranian nation as collateral keep barrowing from shylocks to have another go at it with the same set of loaded dice.

The gambler might take comfort in the free shrimps and other comp the house offers him all the while he plays the fixed game, but the day of reckoning looms all the time.

i enjoyed reading your article. in my opinion, you captured the realities of political process in today's iran and the past accomplishments and failures of the candidates very well. despite the election excitement and unprecedented events such as political debates that we are witnessing in iran, the mood and expectations of what's to come is indeed somber. the leadership in iran has a new weapon in its arsenal: show up and vote or you'll end up with a worse outcome and even that's not guaranteed.
