Baer has gone native and has

by Anonymous... (not verified) on

Baer has gone native and has lost any objectivity whatsoever. This (article below) is what Baer wants because he is a patriotic American.

Is this (article below0 what a patriotic Iranian should want for her/his country??

//iranian.com/main/2008/grand-bargain

Bellicose rantings of some writers on this thread is not going to make Iran a superpower.

Definition of superpower:a country of very great military and economic power; therefore, Iran does not qualify.

Guys, I agree with Pirouz15

by mobin (not verified) on

Guys,

I agree with Pirouz15 and suggest you read his book before making any qualitative judgments. I have read his book in a single day because I got hooked with right from the start. It really is the best book I have read about Iran in many years. Robert Baer knows what he is talking about, especially concerning the Iranian psyche and mentality, and is very informed in my opinion.

I think it’s very hard for the fractious and often self-serving Iranian Diaspora to acknowledge that Iran would make any progress. And when I say self-serving I mean this VOA people and the likes, who would rather see a regime change or revolution today then tomorrow. Well, the last thing that is going to happen any time soon is a regime change. And I am not unhappy about this, if you would put it in the context of the war zone the middle-east is.

What we need is step by step progress towards modernity. The people of fortunately have experienced what revolutions offer, they rather see an evolution.

Its not just Iran. I hear

by Anonymous... (not verified) on

Its not just Iran. I hear ahmadinejad needs oil at $140+ to balance his bloated propaganda budget. Its at $66.

I suspect the IRI goons are soon going to realise that they haven’t been enjoying the wonders of IRI- what happened was they won lotto and blew all the winnings on buying mercenaries and stupid props like press-tv, iran-negah, UN party for antarnejad, lobbying academics, lobbying musicians, lobbying ex CIA and journalists, fake Islamic centers abroad, etc.

Baer is an idiot!

by Anonymous... (not verified) on

This kind of hubris is extremely dangerous. With the GDP of IRI even lower than Malaysia and Mexico,Peru Pakistan, this kind of nonsense is only delusional and self-destructive in the long run.

Welcome to second cold war

by Anonymous Iranian (not verified) on

This should be called second cold war.United states and its allies would love to get rid of the Mullahs, but they can not.It is too risky to start a war with Iran or give a green light to Israel to do a preemptive strike against Iran.It could very well turn the region and whole world into a ball of fire and start world war III .This is something that USA and the whole world can not afford.

Ali, you are making an excellent point. I'd like to elaborate on that a bit more though. There were two reasons that Shah was deposed:

1. Showing signs of treason to his masters. During his last few years of reign (1977-78), he'd managed to win the title of the Eagle of OPEC; through his successful manipulation and lobbying, the price of oil reached $36 a barrel. Those prices were not seen again until 20 years later in 1998.

2. Not being popular with his people at home.

Not that Mullahs are any more popular but at least now Iranian people are politically better informed: They trust neither the US Government nor the Mullahs! In case of a military invasion though they'll definitely back the IRI.

joke

by MRX1 (not verified) on

The whole notion of Iran as a super power is a bog joke. The most important criteria to become a superpower is to have a vibrant and dynamic economey. Anything else short of that is nonesense. Soviet Union was great example: tens of thousends of nuclear war head could not prevent it from collaps and disintegeration.
I think by now majority of us have got used to IRI appologists. They come in all sort of flavor. The common link among all of them, is not one of them lives or would want to live in islamic paradise!

The time of overthrowing regimes without war is over! Other countries have cought up. The only way for US or UK to overthrow government is throw unpopular wars and US and Great Britain showed their lack of their ability with their war with Iraq.

Mr Kadivar, I know that monarchists like you are appalled by the idea of a strong and powerful Iran. Your entire existence relies on the misery and oppression of the people. And that's why you get so nervous every time you see any signs of progress by Iran.

The reality is that Iran has become a great power that demands genuine respect from the world and the world's superpowers are realizing that. During your shah Iran was nothing but a slave nation at the service of it Western masters.

Don't worry ... let him and alike fool themselves ...

by Anonymous123 (not verified) on

Mullahs will have the same fate as the late Shah did if they cross the very vital and sensitive red lines set by the mighty and powerful oil/gas importing countries of this world.

Gas and oil red line are too vital and sensitive for the mighty to ignore and tolerate.

If mullahs do not back off, they will be put in their places soon enough as the Shah was.

Seems like they did not learn anything from the Shah's fate or maybe too much power has made them absent-minded and forgetful. If nobody else knows, they should know.

He is swallowing the IRI Lobbies BS ...

by Darius Kadivar on

Edward Baer is a playboy sensationalist. He is a good author and did a good work with Syriana but he overestimates the IRI as a Super Power.

What is amazing is that all these "Experts" ( ex Spies who previously sold us the Khatami Reformist BS ) don't seem to see the thriving civil society in Iran which is a Reality. THEY NEVER MENTION THEM as if they don't exist.

The Real Time Bomb is Iran's Civil Society and that is what the West needs to Support instead of being impressed by IRI lobbyists with good manners ...

Baer is playing the IRI Apologist Card.

In Diplomatic Terms his profession is that of a Stand Up Philosopher aka Bull Shitter.
