LONDON (Associated Press): A British Army interpreter in Afghanistan sent a coded message to an Iranian military attache offering to spy for the country of his birth, prosecutors said at the opening of his trial Monday. Prosecutors said that Cpl. Daniel James — who was working as a translator for former Gen. David Richards, the NATO commander in Afghanistan — sent the message, which ended with the phrase, "I am at your service" to the attache in Kabul. "The defendant's loyalty to this country wavered and his loyalties turned to Iran, the country of his birth," prosecutor Mark Dennis told a jury at London's Old Bailey court. "He turned his back on those with whom he was serving in Afghanistan and sought to become an agent for a foreign power." James, 45, denies communicating information useful to an enemy and collecting the information — two NATO situation reports — on a USB memory device. He also denies willful misconduct in public office. James was born was born Esmail Mohammed Beigi Gamasai in Iran and moved as a teenager to Britain, where he later changed his name and became a citize >>> See "'Daniel James' - soldier, spy and salsa teacher"

He's An Idiot In Every Which Way
by Hesam (not verified) on Wed Oct 15, 2008 12:08 AM PDTFirst he shouldn't have stayed in UK if he loved Iran.
Second he shouldn't have changed his name to a British name.
Third he shouldn't have joined UK army to fight against or support the enemy of the people of Afghanistan who are also Persian.
Fourth, if he was dumb enough to join UK army against afghans he should have kept his promise to UK and did his job as he should have, not spied against someone he volunteered to work for in the first place.
Retarded people come in all forms and shapes.
I'm glad he didn't come to Iran, we already have too many idiots like him.

What a lot of crap from people here!
by choghok on Tue Oct 14, 2008 02:04 AM PDTMost of You either defend his actions as herosim or you heckle him for being Afghan, grow up people.
I did not like the character assasination made on him by the newspaper, it was neither necessary, ethical or objective by the paper to bring up certain information.
If he has done it then he is criminal in any country, and even worse he works to destabilize a country to struggles to get to democracy by helping Mullahs in Iran.
Pashtun is an Indo-Iranian language which could very well be learned by an Iranian since true Iranians like normal people do posses inteligence to learn things unlike some racist people.

This fellow is not Iranian
by NetSpy (not verified) on Mon Oct 13, 2008 01:20 PM PDTHe was born to Afghan (Pashtu) parents in Iran. After all who else can be described as:
Most importantly, he spoke Farsi, his mother's native tongue, and Pashtun, Afghanistan's main language.
By Farsi, of course the artcile means Dari. No true Iranian can speak Pashtun.
