Ahmad Batebi (1)

Student activist interview with VoA after escape from Iran

PART 1 -- PART 2 -- PART 3 -- PART 4 -- PART 5 -- PART 6

Ahmad Batebi gained notoriety for his appearance on the cover of The Economist magazine holding up a bloodied shirt belonging to a fellow student who had been beaten by the Basij paramilitaries. The photo, which has been called "an icon for Iran's student reform movement," was taken during the Iranian Student Protests in July 1999 in Tehran. Following its publishing, Batebi was arrested, tried in closed-door proceedings, found guilty of "creating unrest," and sentenced to death. This was reduced to 10 years after domestic and international outcry.

Don't forget that there are

by jamshid on

Don't forget that there are tens of thousands of political prisoners rotting in IRI's jail for having committed the crime of wanting freedom for their country.

They are imprisoned so that those "agha zadehs" who post in this site and belittle good Iranian men such as Batebi, could continue with their lavish lives abroad and in Iran with the stolen wealth of Iranians which includes the very same people who are imprisoned.

Batebi is a good Iranian man and any insult thrown at him by the debased and lowly supporters of IRI should be considred a badge of honor.

To "Iran also has right": are you really a human??

by aaj sr (not verified) on

I was going to write a lengthly reply to your unbelievable comment, but, however I tried to convince myself to write and express my true feelings, I couldn't; I couldn't believe my eyes reading such a.....

therefore, I end it here;
I hope you are not an Iranian and if you are , there is no hope for Iran any more ; I hope your are not a human, because a real human would not say or wish anything like this ..

For whatever and whoever you are;
I honestly wish you a rapid mental recovery, becasue with this type of mentality, you are a danger to yourself and your society.
Finally I can not control myself and at least by saying: shame on you , and shame on me as an Iranain to know there are people like you to call him/herself Iranian. I wished I hadn't read this posting.

....Akbar Ganji has also appeared on VOA TV:

Is he also a colonial agent?

If you are still going to try to discredit this amazing young man, you'll have to keep digging. Good luck.

He can say what he wants wherever he wants...

by Fair on

... and it is nobody's damned business. He is a free man, and should never have been imprisoned.

I think we can all agree he has earned his freedom of speech (something which is a right, and should not need earning anyway..)

As far as being labelled foreign agent, the thugs that rule Iran will do that anyway.

He didn't support any US policies or positions, he stated his thoughts on his country and his imprisonment, and if VOA was the first who gave him a microphone, then that is a credit to VOA. Deal with it.

I am glad he is free, and support his cause. Iranians should be free to think what they want, say what they want, eat and drink what they want, wear what they want, and go wherever they want. IT IS NOBODY'S DAMNED BUSINESS.

Be Free. Be FAIR.

BRAVE and Heroic

by not worthy (not verified) on

Wow this guy is amazing and brave, forget for a second that you hate the medium he is using to get his message across, leave all your nit bitty gripes and prejudices and hatred for all things LA... think about the individual alone, what he's gone through and what he stands for... whatever your background or political affiliations, this man deserves your accolades and respect... you cannot tarnish him with demeaning comments or petty insults, I don't care if he appears on entertaiment tonight or Jay Leno!! He is still a Hero...none of you can sit in judgment, because none of you have been through what hes been through... and what he is still going through... can you even IMAGINE what those gutless SOB's are going to do to his family and friends that were left behind? They will seek out and imprison anyone who's name even starts with a B, in the remotest villages in the mountains. God Bless him and his family and all those who are like him.

these guys are heroes with balls as big as the mullahs head.

I totally love his statement on the last part(6): "...there's nothing to be scared about for being a political prisoner or getting tortured...". If only everybody had his guts and the same mentality. Damesh garm. Don't forget, only the strong will survive. And those who didn't make it, may God bless their souls and give strength to their families. Also Courage to those who are still "oontoo" resisting some ugly (I mean ugly) mother f.... taazisefat-e oghdeyi-e gedaa dard($). Again, to this heroe, damet garm.

Freedom Fighter? or Cololonial Agent?

by Baravaram Nemishe! (not verified) on

What Batebi has done is done now, but I can tell you this, with his appearance on VOA he has acted in reckless disregard to his affiliates back in Iran by putting them in danger. This clip right here was the greatest gift that he just given the Ministry of Intel inside Iran (it is they who run the section of Evin which he was in) for they now have rational for current imprisonments of students related to Daftare Takhim Vahdat and further green light for more crackdowns. Opposition in Iran historically has always been one of legitimacy. In Iran they call all those tied to foreign interests, "sootone panjom." Batebi is part of that class now. One of the comments on the clip summed it up best, "khak bar saresh, har chi ehteram dasht be khatere karhash hamash az nazaram mahv shod."

It is one thing to go on VOA and challenge them, it is another thing to do what Batebi has done (which is to provide legitimization to an illegitimate colonial agenda on its official propaganda outlet), something Akbar Ganji never made the mistake of doing, for he always understood this concept of "legitimacy." (and not simply in the eyes of the government, but with the people). This is why Ganji has constantly rejected all appearances on these programs, refused invitation to White House, etc. etc.
