#12 Dr. Ali Javan, Professor of Physics, MIT
#32 Dr. Nima Arkani-Hamed, Professor of Physics, Harvard University
#49 Dr. Pardis Sabeti, Broad Institute Director Eric Lander's laboratory

Daily Telegraph -- The top 100 living geniuses was compiled by a panel of six experts in creativity and innovation from Creators Synectics, a global consultants firm. The company emailed 4,000 Britons this summer and asked them to nominate up to 10 living people who they considered geniuses. Each genius was then awarded scores out of ten against criteria which included: paradigm shifting; popular acclaim; intellectual power; achievement and cultural importance >>> THE LIST

sending surplus academic journals to Iran's university libraries

by hjavadi (not verified) on

Hi,

We are a network group of Iranian-American Physicists who are a member of American Physical (Physics) Society. Recently we have started a good cause (sending academic jounals and books to university libraries in Iran). We have received a lot of enthusiasm from professors and administrators in Iran. It appears that our donations can really benefit education of future Iranian students especially in Science (we are mainly interested in Physics but can easily expand our work to include all branches of science). Many universitiers in Iran (for example Azad Universities) don't have good libraries and thus can not educate high quality students.

With the advent of electronic publication in US, this activity is timely as many US libraries are replacing hard copies of their journals and books with electronic reproduction (scans or digital text). Some libraries in US are literally throwing their journals in the trash bins. If we can act now, we can transfer these old journals and books to good places in Iran where young people can benefit.

Would you please contribute to this worthy cause with your geneous donations?

We can provide with itemized mail/freight expenses and even send the items to a university of your choice. Please help us.

By the way, sending journals to Iran is still allowed under US laws governing embargo regulations against Iran.

Sincerely,

Hamid Javadi

Eh, Pas Esme Man Koo?

by Shamshir (not verified) on

They forgot my name, that's not fair :)
Seriously, this selection may be OK as a form of appreciation but in reality there are thousands of geniuses in Iran who have no representation in the world, no opportunity to gain higher education or follow their dreams. I nominate my genius 12th grade schoolmate in Mashad who graduated highchool with perfect grade then became a truck-driver working with his father out of poverty. I nominate my other genius classmate who joined the Toodeh party and the regime took him away.
Just 3 genuises? I doubt it.

this is crazy

by no name (not verified) on

any list that lists dolly parton as a genius, it is definitely not respectable LOL

Kaveh Nouraee

This list is a load of crap

by Kaveh Nouraee on

It figures that the #1 name is that of a Swiss citizen. After all, Switzerland represents neutrality worldwide. No one can be offended by anything if it's Swiss.

As far as the rest of the list? Geniuses? Hardly. Very good at what they do? In many cases, yes. Muhammad Ali was a great boxer, and very street-smart, but 15 rounds in Zaire against George Foreman at 3AM doesn't make anyone a genius.

Bin Laden? Since when is being a sociopath a criteria for genius? With that criteria, Khomeini, Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin and Pol Pot would be  on the list too.

Too bad there are decent people who are on this list who have their names and reputations dirtied by such an indirect association.

by Persis (not verified) on

Isn'n that a shame that the only Arab geniuse on the list is Osama? One more proof of bruitality and extremism in that culture. Even their genious has to be an extremist.

Lets get these two together!

by match maker (not verified) on

I noticed that Nima and Pardis are about the same age and no info on their marital status. I say, lets get these two geniuses together so that they get married and produce "super genius" kids. Come on, Iranian.com community, let's put our meddling Iranian personalities to work to do something really crazy!! Don't you think they would look cute together??

Did you notice that Osama Bin Laden is number 43, same level as Bill Gates? Strange world!

Jeesh Daram

Would you like to be on a list

by Jeesh Daram on

Niki, hit the point about the skeptics :)
I mean, would you want to be ranked on a list that calls Osama Bin Laden (Saudi Arabia) as a genius and charismatic person? Take a look at the list at #43!

To : MB:, Check the list once again.....

by aaj sr (not verified) on

You will see poet, musicians, singers, actor(ess) and nothing wrong with that. I wished we had Iranians in all categories regardless for their profession.

Niki Tehranchi

Very subjective

by Niki Tehranchi on

Actually, it is a very subjective list as all who have been selected have been ranked according to the degree of family closeness with our dear editor. For example, Dr. Sabeti is ranked only #49 because she is a distant cousin thrice removed and only through marriage, while Dr. Ali Javan, at a higher #12 rank is JJ's great uncle, a true blood relative. The number one spot belongs not even to a person but to a sample of our dear editor 's DNA, consisting of a lone hair strand and some fingernail clippings, which currently reside under a microscope in a basement university laboratory. You can view its tearful acceptance speech on youtube.  As it triumphantly holds its trophy, it effusively thanks all of its fans, its family, the Lord Jesus Christ, and its business agent, without whom all of its success would not be possible. Now that's what I call PARTY BAAZI!!! :-D

Finally no more Persian Rap Artist!

by MB (not verified) on

I am glad that finally we see some real Persiam pride in place of these rap artists that come tolife by sunrise and are gone before sunset!

These are the kind of people that are our "Currency" when it comes to global market of pride and innovation.

So from now on I don't want to hear about Persian rap or rock music called "Goosaaleh" or "dumb bum" etc. Lets show the world the best of us!

Hamed's dad is a physicist himself. That shows in next couple of generations we'll see Iranians on summits of science and innovation.

Tell all these to those nuckle heads who wanna bomb us out to ruins! Not to bring up that nasty name but perhpas that ass hole who published that "roaches coming out of sewer" on Iran's map should take a notice!

Take it back!

by causiously+proud (not verified) on

Seems like they are really top notch! No bias! Wow! But any ranking of this kind has to have some subjectivity mixed in! As I said hey we take it! ;-)

There is another great Iranian physicist in Harvard:
Cameron Vafa.

Fishy!!

by Causiously_proud! (not verified) on

Not to take anything from our brilliant compatriots but the list is very suspicious! I guess some fellow Ironi got on the selection team and did a bit bias work!

Ofcourse Javan should have perhaps nominated for nobel because he discovered the first gaseous laser.

Did you notice Osama is on the list too?
Hey we take it!

Niki Tehranchi

How dare you

by Niki Tehranchi on

post these so called "geniuses" without proof such as resume, list of published research papers, and a dissertation on whether they like to crack their boiled eggs from the pointy end or the round end?

Just kidding of course JJ, just consider this a pre-emptive strike against the group of amateur sleuths, conspiracy theorists, and general hassoud haters who wish to once again crap on the achievements of fellow compatriots!
