Iranian embassy throws away prize-winning sculpture
Tehran Times Art Desk

TEHRAN -- Officials at the Iranian Embassy in France have put the broken pieces of an award-winning sculpture out with the rubbish.

“The Growth” (Ruyesh) sculpture was awarded the grand prize at the third Tehran Contemporary Sculpture Biennial in 2002.

Created by Kambiz Sharif, it was erected at the Iranian Embassy in Paris in 2003. It had been transferred to Paris from Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Art at the request of former ambassador, Sadeq Kharazi.

Sharif told ISNA that he had recently been informed that the sculpture had broken into pieces a year ago and had been removed from the venue as garbage.

Although the sculpture had been donated to the embassy, it had been stipulated that measures be taken to protect the artwork, he added.

Sharif remarked that he is surprised how employees working in Paris, which he considers to be the cradle of global art, could be capable of such a botch.

Sharif has been informed by a contact in the Iranian embassy that the employees (who are resident in the capital of the art world!) don’t value art and artworks

I am not trying to defend anyone but the author does not appear to be a reliable source either.

Be Aware of this stooge ..........DK

by Foad on

I am not an art connoisseur but anything submitted by this warmonger stooge is suspect. Unfortunately Iranian.com has no means to check this story. I checked yesterday Le Monde on line cover to cover and did not see anything about it. Please be careful a charlatan may be spreading half truth in order to bring back that incompetent mofkhore to power as his murderous father was on 28th of Mordad.

I have seen desecration of a historic Zoroastrian chapel in Isfahan by Pahlavi regime when they erected an ugly water tower next to such a historical jewel. Foad

Anything with no $$$ in it will be treated this way

by farrad02 on

In Iran's current government & administrative culture, the employees and management will do nothing unless there is $$$ in it for them. Protecting art and cultural values is the last of this group's concerns!

Furthermore, the sector of Iranian society who is currently ruling the country are the religious peasant classes of the near past who have not developed an appreciation and value for such art!  May be their children will grow up different!
