I didn't say it is right

I just said I was called Uzbak before and it was not used in a affectionate way.  Feshangi said the same thing.  I don't know him unless he is my cousin who is still in Iran.

I know uzgal and that was refered to people who were not chic.  When I asked in my youth what does Uzbak mean someone told me it means like that hunch back of Notre Dame guy.  At the time, there were movies and cartoons about the hunch back guy.  I don't have a hunch but I think they were wishing it on me!

Of course this is not right and Uzbaks are great people, like all other people in the world.  They are unique with their own great culture and traditions.

I'm just saying Uzbak was used as a slur in Iran by SOME people, not even knowing why it was being used in that fashion.  Maybe it sounded bad to them.  Does it?

No, we are not mixing it up. This word "Ozbak" was used a very very very long time ago by the youth in Iran. However, nowadays in Iran this word is hardly used, but yes "Ozgal" is still sometimes used.

People of Uzbekistan are Chagatai Turks, were united by Sheybek Xan and after that they are called Uzbek same as Iran after Reza shah, changed the name from Persia to Iran.
anyhow Uznek Lnaguage is the most affected Turkick language, which even its gramer affected by Persian, in compareing to Azerbaijani ,which its gramer is still intact.
Also ozbeks donot fully follow the vowel harmony like Turks from Hamadan Area.Azerbaijanies moslty follow the vowel harmony like Turkmen language.
still after living more than 30 years in Iran I have not heard Uzbek or Ozbek as an offence in persian language.
I am sure you guys are mixing Ozbek with Ozgel,
looks like you persian friends need to work more on your native language.

Ozbak also means

or at least it meant hunch back. Like the hunch back of Notre Dame.  Sometimes people don't know what they are saying and some of these slanks are just made up.

I remember being called Uzbak or calling others Uzbak khode-tea.  Before Borat made Kazakisatan famous, I think Uzbaks were famous :-)

i dont know if you are familiar with persian curse words but ozbak is actually used to insult someone, and "anonymous news" is right abt the origin of this word among Iranians. and ozgal (or "Uzgel" as you say)is also used as an insult.
and please, this has absolutely nothing to do with being ultra nationalist or being anti-turk, that was very irrelevant.

you guys are intresting in mixing up the meaning of Uzbek, it its (uz+Bek) means the kingdom of Uz (Oghuz= branches and a name of a Turkish tribe).Turks always are admired by Iranians because of Turksih beauti,

the word is used as an insult in persian is Uzgel,which comes from Turkish root Uzge (stranger ).
Please keep going with your ultra nationalism and anti tukr attitude and do not be ashamde of your Azerbaijani and Turkmen hamvatan.

Use of this word in persian is unfortunate, but here is its history...

Ozbak or Ozbek is really meant to mean ugly (facially or behaviorally) -- it refers to Mongolian facial features or behavior, once considered ugly compared to iranians. It may relate to historical dislike of iranians from Genghis Khan (and possibly his decedents).

It contrast with the word gorji (or gorgeous in english) meaning beautiful relating to the other side of caspian residents, or Georgians (gorjestan) where they were considered to be beautiful.

However, the current residents of central asia are really of mixed race as you can see some looking more oriental and some looking more iranian in facial features.

When I was young and when someone was mad with me they used to say, "ay ozbak!" , or "ozbak nasho." I have no idea what exactly they meant, but I am certain it was not an indication of love or affection.

The photo essay started good, however, it ended up with too many shots of Mosques!

I bet there is more to Bokhara then this.

I do appreciate the photographer's effort, but it could have been better. Perhaps next time we can have more of faces and other places.
