"It is obvious that Iran has been playing a larger role in Syria in many ways," Mr Panetta said at a press conference with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey.
There is now evidence that Iran's Revolutionary Guards are "trying to develop, trying to train a militia within Syria to be able to fight on behalf of the regime," Mr Panetta said.;;
"The Syrian army has been fighting now for about 18 months or so. And any army would be taxed with that kind of pace," Gen Dempsey said, noting he expected that the Syrian military was experiencing resupply and morale problems.
"That's why Iran is stepping in to form this militia, to take some of the pressure off of the Syrian military."
>>>The new militiia would be a Syrian Hezbollah (or Hezbollah #3).
As usual Iran will deny all. As usual no one will believe a word from this tainted regime. Syrians will never forget or forgive the huge and direct role Khamenei and Putin played in the mass murders and physical destruction of their country. They will find a way to repay both dictators.
Khamenei is indeed drawing on the IRI's experience in forming, arming and training the Hezbollah I (Lebanon) and Hezbollah II (Iraq's Al Mahdi militia). The ruling mullahs are notorious for creating such proxies wherever they can find a suitable population for its use. Such covert schemesl which also include the shipping of weapons and bomb-making materials to neighboring countries are a central reason for the IRI's pariah status with everyone who lives nearby.
Should Assad survive, however unlikely, Khamenei will likely expect the newly trained militia to return the favor when a fed up Iranian people eventually explode in rage. As in 2009 he will call on Hezbollah I. This time Hezbollah II in Iraq will be expect to assist as well.
