Head of Iran’s Social Security Organization Saeed Mortazavi has resigned after Majlis signed an impeachment motion against the Minister of Labor, Cooperatives and Social Welfare.

Twenty lawmakers signed the motion to impeach Minister Abdolreza Sheikholeslami after he appointed former Tehran Prosecutor Mortazavi as the head of the Social Security Organization.

The lawmakers withdrew their motion following Mortazavi's resignation.

Mortazavi has been accused of involvement in the deaths of three detainees in Kahrizak Detention Center during the unrest following the 2009 election.

Under the Iranian Constitution, the members of the Majlis can impeach an individual minister in instances they deem necessary.

An impeachment motion can be submitted to the Majlis presiding board if it bears the signatures of at least 10 lawmakers.
