Three loud explosions have signalled that the assault aimed at arresting an Al Qaeda terrorist in south west France has begun.
Mohammad Merah, a 23-year-old who admits murdering seven people in past week, had been holed up in his flat in the city of Toulouse with a variety of weapons for more than 21 hours.
But after negotiations broke down, police said they were moving in. They turned powerful spotlights on to Maher’s building in an attempt to blind him and keep him from seeing the police operation closing in around him. Street lights had been switched off hours before.
