A growing rift in the Revolutonary Guard

As reported earlier, former supporters of Ahmadinejad formed a new political group, Jebheh Paaydaari Enghelaab-e Eslami (JPEE) [the Durable Front of the Islamic Revolution] and fielded their own candidates for the March 3 Majles elections. The leader of JPEE is the reactionary cleric Mohammad Taghi Mesbah Yazdi. The JPEE published an eight-page bulletin harshly criticizing Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani, Chairman of the Assembly of Experts and the spiritual leaders of pro-Khamenei forces in the Majles elections, which refers to itself as the Jebheh Mottahed-e Osoolgaraayaan (JMO) [the United Front of Principlists].

Divisions everywhere

by FG on

An excellent description of the deep divisions developing in the Islamic Republic and not just in the IRCG.

Except for the retired IRCG dissenters, these feuding insiders seem to hate each more with each passing day.  Nevertheless for now at least I suspect most one-time allies would close ranks again if ex-reformers renewed protests.  Time, additional feuding and acceleration of other crises will reduce that tendency encourage defections instead.

A combination of hyperinflation and election bitterness may do, but only if the new demonstrations are clearly initiated by and led by the working class and poor with the former greens soon joining in to create a formidable, highly inclusive alliance.  Combine that with further bad news in various areas, and the panicky sense of being on a sinking ship should should send many regime stalwarts running for the lifeboats.   Look especially for defections among lower and middle ranks of the security forces.   Some former principals and ex-officers may join in.  Some will flee abroad. When that happens, you'll know 30 plus years of hell are almost over.

Spot on. That sums up what will eventually happen. It's just a matter of time.
