Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is in China for his first overseas trip since he revealed plans to reclaim the Russian presidency.

The visit is expected include a fresh round of talks on an elusive gas deal to supply China with up to 68bn cubic metres of gas each year.

China is Russia's top trading partner and the two countries want to nearly double trade to $100bn by 2015.

Dr Liu Youfa, vice president of the China Institute of International Studies, explains the impact Mr Putin's visit will have on those negotiations.
