“[We] hope the first phase of this network will become operational this year,” Iran's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Reza Taqipour said on Wednesday.

“The network can fundamentally solve the security problems of the Internet,” IRNA quoted the Iranian Minister as saying.

“Many countries admit that while the Internet is a public sphere for obtaining information it is not safe for serious affairs and particularly unsafe for the important and critical information of governments and countries…,” Taqipour said.

The Iranian minister pointed to crimes such as unauthorized publication of personal content and the violation of family privacy and said information security has been taken into consideration in the new network.

The project envisions incorporating 20,000 schools before executive establishments are connected the network.

The initiative has been included in the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan -- part of the Islamic Republic's long-term roadmap for sustainable growth.
