Police Disperse Iranian Protesters With Tear Gas

TEHRAN, Iran -- Clashes between Iranian police and tens of thousands of protesters wracked central Tehran on Monday as security forces beat and fired tear gas at opposition supporters hoping to evoke Egypt's recent popular uprising.

The opposition called for a demonstration Monday in solidarity with Egypt's popular revolt that a few days earlier forced the president there to resign after nearly 30 years in office. The rally is the first major show of strength for Iran's cowed opposition in more than a year.

APIranian protesters throw stones at anti-riot police officers during an anti-government protest in Tehran, Iran, on Monday.
Police used tear gas against the protesters in central Tehran's Enghelab, or Revolution, square and in Imam Hossein square, as well as in other nearby main streets. Demonstrators responded by setting garbage bins on fire to protect themselves from the stinging white clouds.

Eyewitnesses said at least three protesters injured by bullets were taken to a hospital in central Tehran while dozens of others were hospitalized because of severe wounds as a result of being beaten.

"An Iranian dies but doesn't accept humiliation," demonstrators chanted. "Death to the dictator," they said, in a chant directed at hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Security forces on motorcycles could also be seen chasing protesters through the streets, according to eyewitnesses.

No amount of flowery rhetoric or platitudes from Obama will change Iran, nor will these protests succeed in doing anything other than motivating Ahmadinejad's Gov't. to crack down on dissenters.
But don't worry, The Iranian Republic of Iran will fall to a democracy.....Israel will eventually be forced to drop the hammer, the Hebrew Hammer that is, on Mahmoud and the Boys. It is only a matter of time.

I know that nobody wants the US to get dragged into any further conflicts, but it seems to me like the people of Egypt and Iran are fighting for the right things. Things are not the same as they were 20 years ago. They have internet, they see how democracy works. They want it. This would be an ideal opportunity for America to be the great nation we used to be and help those who are trying to help themselves. I'm not saying we should go invade or occupy - but we should do whatever we can to peacefully support them.

It's the CLERICS in Iran that tell the pres there what to do.... it's NOT about GOD or religion ... it's all about POWER and money and greed.... To the Iranian people.... stand up to these thugs and claim your country back to the people and tar and feather them and run them out of town on a rail....

The people of Egypt although repressed were not fired upon by the army, The Iranian goverment will show no such respect. The mullahs will kill their own people in order to save the regime.

While the Middle East seems to be falling into deeper chaos, The US is being handed a tremendous opportunity to pick up the pieces, and continue the infectious spread of Freedom which was started in Iraq by everyones favorite whipping boy (GWB, 43rd POTUS).... I never expect the media to recognize this fact, but the repercussions of the "regime change war" started in March of 2003, has slowly spread across the entire region... If these events were an intended fallout, or just the result of the people in neighboring countries witnessing the excitement & good fortune of the Iraqi people, noone can say... I do believe that the ultimate success achieved in Iraq, has played a major role in bolstering the confidence & bravery displayed by the people that are rising up to challenge the dictators that rule Syria, Tunisia, Algeria & most importantly Iran...
Certainly, through no action of our current Prez. he still is being presented a wonderful opportunity, to peacefully change the entire landscape of the region..... I hope & pray that this moment in history will not be squandered, and that he is recieving the correct advice, that will drastically reduce the threat of WWIII breaking out in this part of the world... President Bush (whether intentionally or not) has opened a door through which individual freedom can FINALLY take hold.... If Iran's current government, and most of all, her insane Pres. can be removed from power w/o using exterior armed forces, the entire world can rest a little easier.... History will look back on this time, and my hope is that the people of these countries can be spoken of with bravery & pride at what they were able to accomplish..... History will also look favorably upon the 2 terms of GWB, as the catalyst for these sweeping freedom...

Those mullahs and their sons aren't going to give up their billions

Bwahahaha; after praising the Egyptian protesters for those demonstrations, the supreamly hypocrytical religious leaders in iran gas their own people, what a sinking ship of fools.

Iran officials CONTINUE to show the world that they ARE a Dictatorship.... all dictatorships FALL and so they better get their bags packed and head to their holes in the ground.... Hey.... your not going to stop human beings from wanting their freedom.... it's inevitable.... George Bush will be haled as one of the greatest presidents of the USA because of his heroic backbone.

Such a shame, one can only imagine where Iran would be today had The Obama administration taken immediate and decisive action to support the anti government protests of a year ago. That said, I think its about time for the rest of the free world to take a stand against the murderous Iranian regime. What would happen if Merkcle, Sarkosy, Bertolinni, and the leaders of Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Czechoslovokia, Hungry, Austria & Swizerland Called a conferance and at the end of that conferance ALL came out to a sea of media and voiced support for the protestors and condemnation to the Iranian Government Forget the world waiting on the United States for once, this is something that these countries could do with a week and don't tell me that it would not have earth shaking results. The United States cannot do it all, it is time for other countries to stop quitely existing for themselves and their people and step up to the world stage and get involved.

haroldlynn
If only someone with the strength and convictions of Ronald Reagan was at the helm of the US today to lend support to the protesters. The people of many Muslim nations are tired of the tyranny the are forced to live under. Worldwide support and unity is what is needed today. It will never happen with Obama in the Oval Office.

Hello Sean ;)
Obama is a coward. He will watch as the protestors are slaughtered, God bless and protect those in Iran seeking freedom from the regime that is bent on destroying civilization.

"An Iranian dies but doesn't accept humiliation," demonstrators chanted. "Death to the dictator," they said, in a chant directed at hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The difference between Iran and Egypt is that Mubarek, while a dictator was never a terrorist.

mrgr10119
Gotta love it. Egypt rids itself of a dictator and Iran has a riot and some idiots are blaming Jews and Israel.Hah. What happens when you stop drinking the Kool aid and start putting the blame where it belongs: on your Arab and Persian dictators. #1 for stealing your freedom and #2 for stealing your wealth. #3 for stealing the truth to cover their crimes from you. You might also thank Israel for not wiping your countries off the map when they had the chance.

the morning joe group was sitting their with their mouths opened as the author of the newsweek article blasted obama and the admin. as clueless...none of the liberal group had a response....

When the theocracy goes, so will most of the ME problems. The Arabs hate the Iranian theocracy because they are Shias. Imagine that, Muslims hating Muslims. Wouldn't have guessed.

Frank81
The Iranians have to learn from their mistakes in there last uprising & also take notes from the Egyptians. The most important thing is they have to fight back & not just stand there & let the cops, pro gov. forces beat on them. Theres a time to be peaceful & there's a time to fight for your rights.

danbol1237
Where is the "dude" in the white house when it comes to demanding democracy in Iran like he did in Egypt? The only mention in the article of the white house involvement is one sentence "bringing sharp criticism from the White House and others." It was so sharp that Ahmadinejad felt it all the way in Tehran. Get real "dude", demand the same thing about stepping down to Ahmadinejad you did tof Mubarak.

meitis345534067
Hopefully the Irainian people recognize Achmedinijain is not actually the one in power. He is a pupet of a Theocricy. They need to take on the ruling mulahs, if they really want change.

firststatemate
It's about time these arab nations rose up against tyranny and oppression instead of American blood and resources being expended. If they want to be martyrs, let them be martyrs for freedom and democracy.
I hope those bastards who think terrorism will get them into Heaven with 7 virgins will be met by 7 nuns beating the s*** out of them and kicking their stupid asses into Hell.

Iran has a very serous problem. The riot is vicious, while security forces is trying to stop the riotous protest there is little encouragement that an organized or un-organized protest may succeed at all. The events may very well turn even more violent as today is followed by an all-out protest continues. The events may result in un-wanted deaths and may turn into an uprising with potential of escalation by all parties involved. With the idea of just changing the person as a Puppet President the results will be futile, because a new Puppet will be appointed President. What kinds of complex involvements contribute to change remains to be seen and is not encouraged to get involved

Islam is a Curse on the sane world. Where is Obama.

HELLO ?? Mr.Obama - are you out there?? You were very quick to jump on the situation in Eygypt when the people called for a change - How come you did not do the same in 2009 when Iran did the same thing and why are you so quite now?

Why are people bad mouthing Obama on this deal in Iran? He is an idiot but the credit for this mess goes to Jimmy Carter the 20th centuries dumbest American president ever elected. Obama will be a one term president just like Carter but this muslim problem wasn't created by him it was old peanut head Jimmy Carter, Billy would have made better decisions while drinking Billy beer. lol lol lol

Steve
I have tried to communicate my good wishes from America to the Iranian protesters at kaleme.com and it bounces back How do i get my message through to these brave people? Destroy Achmadinijad!

makeredhappy
Why bother....they're Arabs, no need to tell them anything. Look what a great job they've been doing for generations! No need for any American to get embroiled in another mess in the sand!

When a country or religion can only keep its hold on its people by force ,it is the closest thing to a communistic state or a cult that you can get !!

rightdm
Where is Obama's response to this? He was so quick to tell the world he "hears" the voices of the Egyptian protesters calling for fredom and turned it into self-serving campaign rhetoric. Meanwhile the true voices for freedom in Iran were ignored by Obama in 2009 while people were being killed and fall on deaf ears today, as does the protestations of millions here at home as he forces Obamacare and union bailouts under the guise of "stimulus" down our throats. His hearing is painfully selective and only works when he thinks it will improve his chances of re-election.

Booyah!
Hmmmm. Wonder why islamic countries do not take in the Palestinians ?

moaber
When the base of a country is a religion that demands either the conversion or killing of others that do not believe as they do, then you have a country that will never have peace. It is simply not possible

dalpt8
Good for the Iranian protestors! If they keep it non violent they will gain the support of the world. I feel for the people who lost loved ones but even Ghandi put his life on the line......do not forget him and use him for a model. Good luck. May G-d be with you.

Mingo
Don't expect our president to get involved like he did in egypt. He seems to shy away from that ,sort of like he sides with the Iranian gov. I guess Obama likes the brotherhood and not free in Iran also

dvdsn61
Without our second amendment, we could someday be throwing rocks at armed government forces.

dariafae
Iranians should be as balzy....never stop..... close down the markets..... stay on the streets..... fight the police...convince them to join you....

rightdm
There is a difference between Egypt and Iran and I would say the people calling for freedom in Iran have the more important fight. The fall of the Shah sent Iran into dark times under the rule of mullahs and dictators, Egyptians repeatedly voted to retain Mubarak. His last election he received something like 88% of the vote. Even if you took 30% away in the name of ballot box stuffing, a greater majority than we usually see in our elections would still be left. We have to ask why, when after 30 years and Mubarak stepping down in 7 months, they spent all this energy on protests instead of using it to ensure fair and honest elections when Mubarak left. There is more going on here than meets the immediate eye. I hope we will not see a repeat of Iran in Egypt. When the Shah went down, the people were shouting the same thing as the Egyptians were. How did that work out?

rsticks18
iran has been executing someone every 9 hours since new year's-------mostly political opposition---LOTS of news stories about it------our president has said squat about that--------

rsticks18
in egypt the army was with the people------------in iran---a radical islamic state-------who really thinks the army is with the people?

The citizens of Iran deserve far better than they are getting. Komeni promised to share the oil wealth withthe people of Iran, if they let him return in 1979. That promise failed to be met. The repressive acts by the Guard (Thugs) only proved to the people that they were decieved. I only want to wish the people of Iran the power to overcome the repressive regime that governs (abuses) them. " Power to the Iranean people!"

Unbelievable, Karma is coming to the terrorists leaders, right to their front doors.

jcmaxpu
rush is right these domocrats are the spin masters of the spin masters, when bush was talking and taking steps for democracy in the middle east to spread, all democrats would do is cry and say why do we get into other peoples business and that they wont even know what to do with a freely elected goverment, and now they see the fruits of president bush taking place and al democrats want to do is make speeches taking credit for egypt's uprising to freedom.

kwhowa
Do the Iranian people have the guts to take back their country by force? Can these people fight knowing thousands of them will die and nobody in the world will lift a finger to help them? As far as having sympathy from the average American? They chose these religeous fanatics over three decades ago and decided they wanted to send their country backward in time to 2000 years ago. What do they want to replace this government with? Is it true they just want another Muslim nut job in office who may be just as bad as this one or worse?

bbspply
can't they just roast a pig and get along?

I am a optomistic Republican. I am going to say that this is going to led them to freedom. I think there young want there country to be more like the U.S . Let's Hope the powers to be in this country do the right thing

People just don't understand democracy cannot be imposed. Democracy is a process. That process must be learned over time. Sometimes people get hurt and things get broken during the learning process. For Iran, Egypt, and Yemen it must be one slow, painful step at a time. Many mistakes will be made. Some things will work, some things won't work. sometimes they will have to start over again. But they have to keep trying. I wish them all the best of luck!

asglir
I want to see if Obama, the media, and world leaders support this push for real democracy in Iran....time to step to the plate you"pro democracy" supporters.....come down on this regime facebook people as you did on Hosni! And yes....talk about change

I don't know how the anti semites come out of the woodwork when the topic is the Nazi Ahmadinijad clamping down on his own people. What do Jewish bankers have to do with the Iranian mullahs who want to destroy israel and keep their own people in chains. The truth is that the Iranians support destroying Israel to have someone to scapegoat just like all the other Nazis of the universe.

rfz670
It all started under Carter, you can't chage history.

ALLRIGHT, WHAT IS OUR ILLUSTRIUOS TRIBAL CHIEF, HUSSEIN OBAMA DOING NOW, E? DOES HE HAVE THE GUTS TO TAKE ON ONE OF EQUAL SIZE OR DOES THE BULLY ONLY TAKE ON THOSE HE KNOWS HE CAN STEP ON OR IS HE STILL PAVING THE WAY FOR A RADICAL ISLAMIC WORLD ORDER? THE PEOPLE OF IRAN ARE SAYING IT LOUD AND CLEAR. TEHY WANT T-R-U-E D-E-M-O-C-R-A-C-Y. NOT DEMOCRACY UNDER AL SHARIA LAW. LIKE IN EGYPT, THEY WANT THEIR ISLAMIC DICTATORS REMOVED , THEY WANT FREEDOM FROM OPRESSION AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. NOT OPRESSION BY RELIGION! WHAT SAY YOU OBAMA?

blackburndh
The Iranian Government of Ahmadinejad is a farce that will twist the Egyptians' independence movement to support their cause while tear-gasing and killing their own people for desiring Iranian independce. May the Iranian people win their Independence against Mob rule that exist and may God Bless the peace-loving, independence-seeking people throughout the world!
