Iran climbs to 70th in the world human development index
Human Development Report Office / UNDP
06-Nov-2010 (23 comments)

The United Nations released its 2010 Human Development Index (HDI) on Thursday putting Iran in the 70th place among the 169 countries mentioned in its list.

The Mehr News Agency reported that every year UNDP publishes the Human Development Report which is considered to be a significant and reliable economic and social reference in the world. Each country’s HDI is calculated based on the states’ life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling and its per capita gross national income (GNI).

According to the report analysis most developing countries made dramatic yet often underestimated progress in health, education and basic living standards in recent decades, with many of the poorest countries posting the greatest gains, revealing a detailed new analysis of long-term HDI trends in the 2010 Human Development Report.
Yet patterns of achievement vary greatly, with some countries losing ground since 1970, the 2010 Human Development Report shows.

By introducing three new indices, the 20th anniversary edition of the report documents wide inequalities within and among countries, deep disparities between women and men on a wide range of development indicators and the prevalence of extreme multidimensional poverty in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Norway, Australia and New Zealand ranked highest respectively, while Afghanistan along with many African countries had the lowest
ranking

Iran's progress in living standards

by Taghootshekan on

The people of the Islamic Republic Iran continue to make strides to the disappointment of those expatriates who wish Iran no good because of the political system in power.  Iran is a resurgent nation, and its march to global prominence is assured. Well done to the people of Iran and congratulations to the revolutionary government for making this possible! Iran continues to ascend in the rankings whereas during the Pahlavi dynasty Iran wasn't even in the top 100. Our friendly neighbor Turkey is ranked 83rd. So much for the all the talk of the benefits of living in a secular state.

Another great stride for Iran and its people - thanks go to the hizbollahi tyrants raping Iran.

Also as a matter of interest if the HDI is 20 years old (i.e. 1990) please explain (and cite authoritative sources) how you obtain HDI data for the 1970s?

Progress in living standards?

Of course! Even children in Iran have the luxury of smoking opium:

Can you read period? IRI's infant mortality is #119 or #155 (depending on the source)

Its life expectancy is ranked between #103 and #132. In 1979, its GDP per capita ranking was between #47 and #50; today, it is between #61 and #71 for GDP per capita (PPP) and between #74 and #91 for GDP per capita (nominal). In 1979, Iran had a bigger economy than South Korea. Today, South Korea's economy is much bigger than the IRI's.

dumb comparison

by Fesenjoon on

"This year we made more quality cars than the United Kingdom"

Iran hass quality cars? Like what? Iran Khodro? Saipa? Or maybe the all-new 2011 Imam Khodro

The UK's quality cars are Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, and  Jaguar. Im not even going to mention Land Rover and the Mini, since we're talking about "quality cars".

What a totally retarded comparison you made there. Nuff said.

Can you not read data???

Amir,

I suggest you actually put the figures into Excel and perform a basic calculation. You will see that Iran in 1975 was behind Turkey and countries like Nicaragua and just above Zimbabwe.

//www.photius.com/rankings/human_developement...

Iran was one of the most backward countries in the world.

AMIR1973

According to this report,

by AMIR1973 on

According to this report, Iran has a development index of 0.571 in 1975 which placed it at about 118 in the world.

Where does that link state that? A lot of the countries on the list didn't even have HDI scores for 1975, so how can one make that conclusion?

If democracy replaces theocracy, it is possible that Iran will overtake South Korea......Theocracy is the stumbling block.....Khamenei is the stumbling block, he alone prevents the country from moving forward economically and politically!

Iran will overtake Korea

by Taghootshekan on

There is no doubt that South Korea has transformed itself in the last 30 years, but then it hasn't faced war, insurrection, sanctions and capital flight like Iran has. It has, instead, received massive aid from the West to protect it from the North and China.

However, South Korea is economically declining. Just look at Iran's rapid growth in motor vehicle production since 2000. This year we made more quality cars than the United Kingdom (the home of the industrial revolution).

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_...

Iranian companies, like Entekhab, are even taking over the South Korea electronic giants like Daewoo.

//www.livetradingnews.com/daewoo-sold-to-iran...

The future is bright: the future is Islamic republic.

Terrorist IRI is lower that Saudi Barbaria and Kuwait and many other countries and they want a prize for THIS?

A better comparison is with South Korea which had roughly the same level of advancement and economy to Iran before so-called revolotion . Now in this report theiy are twelwth in the world and

"Between 1980 and 2010 Korea (Republic of)'s HDI
rose
by 1.2% annually from 0.616 to 0.877 today,"

and Terrorist IRI has "HDI is 0.702,
which gives the country a rank of 70"

this deserves a prize. and the prize will be given to Mullahs and their thugs soon

With all the oil (that S. Korea does not have).

The only thing Terrorist IRI is number one in the world is execution of Iranians for reasons based on cult of Islam

Iran bozorgtar mishe

by Taghootshekan on

If you look at the index, Islamic Iran is 70th whereas secular Turkey is 83rd. Before the glorious Revolution, Turkey was ahead of Iran.

If you look at the information published by the U.N...

//hdr.undp.org/en/media/HDR_2010_EN_Table2.pd...

..you can see that Iran has jumped 10 places since Ahmadinejad took over. The growth rate of 1.35% per annum from 1990-2010 is higher than most major countries except China. This graph shows Iran rising in development much higher than the rest of the world

//hdrstats.undp.org/en/countries/profiles/IRN...

According to this report, Iran has a development index of 0.571 in 1975 which placed it at about 118 in the world.

//www.photius.com/rankings/human_developement...

Then you should consider that Iran is now the 12 largest automobile and 16th largest steel producer and now a grain exporter.

Where in the UNDP report does it state:

And

"Iran has climbed 40 places in the last 30 years. That is more than any other country in the world!"

of its supporters who can't even spell the word "liar" when they try to accuse the regime opponents of being one.  Now, here's your smiley face: :-)

PS- What the hell does this mean?

 Expecting much progress from a country that was under revolution and war for ten years. economic sanctions for 30 years not to mention low oil prices for a long time about $10 dollars a barrel is disgeneous at best.

Does this mean you're a dangerous person for talking about IRI's progress?  We knew that already, but thanks for confirming it.

As for Iran, those who question Iranian progress are at best propagandist or outright lier.

Expecting much progress from a country that was under revolution and war for ten years. economic sanctions for 30 years not to mention low oil prices for a long time about $10 dollars a barrel is disgeneous at best.

What is clear is that Iran under IRI will stand as thorn in the eyes of Iranian traitors or enemies regardless of any achievements or lack of it. What these people are interested in only is to bad mouth IRI, nothing else!

Iran has climbed 40 places in the last 30 years. That is more than any other country in the world!  And  all this despite war, insurrection, sanctions and emigration, and foreign-backed destablization.

Btw, I am wearing a "green" headband. You should like that. Maybe you would like that I write on it "I am Neda" or something .

31 years and billions of dollars later, in today's world, IRAN should have been in the top ten. Its a shame on IRI that we are where we are, and now we have to proud of being 70th.

Wake up, put the terrorist image aside see how Iranian people are living inside Iran and feel ashamed. Some of you guys live on another planet it seems.
