The original 1952 cover art for children's book Charlotte's Web has sold for more than $155,000 (£97,000) at a New York auction.

The artwork for EB White's book, about the friendship between a spider and a pig, was drawn by Garth Williams.

It fetched more than five times its pre-sale estimate, scoring a record for the artist's work.

A spokesman for Heritage Auctions said the buyer was a New York collector who wished to remain anonymous.

The late artist's family submitted 42 of his original illustrations for the classic tale to the auction, selling for a combined total of $780,245 (£487,927).

Another famous drawing from the book entitled: There Was the Handsome Pig, and Over Him, Woven Neatly in Block Letters, Was the Word TERRIFIC, sold for $95,600 (£59,800).
