Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said Israel's raid on the Gaza aid flotilla has increased the chances of war in the Middle East.
In an interview with the BBC's Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen, he said Syria was working to prevent a regional war.
But he added that there was no chance of a peace deal with the current Israeli administration, which he called a "pyromaniac government".
Mr Assad also rejected claims he was arming Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Thu Jun 17, 2010 08:19 AM PDTI would love to see more secular nations in the area. I hope that Syria will get somewhere. In fact I know they really want Golan back. That gives Israel a bargaining chip. Maybe a swap like Sinai would be in the interest of both nations.
Now imagine a secular modern Iran and how that would play. It would be vastly better for the Middle East and will be able to broker many beneficial deals for the region. I really hope Israel shares a vision of a secular Iran.
I have in the past propose a regional common market. Including: Iran; Israel; Palestinians and the Arab nations; perhaps with Armenia included.
What is needed is common bonds of unity. Prosperity is the foe of violance.

assad is not as strong as erdogan or as univocal. but this is a secular, modernized country in the region which should not be brushed aside or demonized by israel and the west gratuitously.
desperately hoping something constructive will emerge from all the destruction and death
Syria
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Thu Jun 17, 2010 06:29 AM PDTI am not sure what Syria is trying to do. They like IRI keep talking about Palestinians. Syria will risk losing more territory to Israel if it gets involved.
The only time anyone got land back from Israel was by negotiation. Sadat got the Sinai desert back by talking not shooting and got assassinated for it.
