Iran's role model and inspiration - on skis

The first Iranian woman to take part in the Winter Olympics says she hopes she will be able to inspire Muslim women all over the world to get involved in sport.

Marjan Kalhor has overcome conservative opposition to her participation in the games by wearing a headscarf under her skiing helmet.

High in the Alborz mountains north of the sprawling city of Tehran lies Dizin, the centre of the country's skiing industry.

Although skiing is popular in Iran, a lack of investment in the resort has left it with outdated ski lifts and little modern skiing infrastructure.

But that hasn't stopped the rise to fame of Ms Kalhor - who has already made history.

This week the 21-year-old is thousands of miles away in Vancouver preparing for her debut in the Winter Olympics.

Marjan ended 68 out of 87 but this time NOT last in finishes!

She beat a Chinese and a Lebanese skier.  Hopefully she'll get better time in 2nd run.

Everything is sacred.

Marjan Kalhor did a lot better today and ended up 60th overall

Still last but she also skied last when the course was really bad.  Yesterday Julia Mancuso the 2-time silver medalist this year and gold in 2006, had to be waved off when the skier in front of her crashed.

Julia was about 17th or 18th skier in the 1st run and was in top 5 in terms of time when she was waved off.  When she went back up the hill to ski she had to start about 40th or something and the piste was so bad that she ended up 18th in the first run, crying and all!

Today Julia started 18th and ended up 8th overall.  So if Marjan had started 18th she'd have ended up higher.  But in the end they let the better skiers with better records go earlier.

She may have a better chance tomorrow in the Slalom.  It is slower and more to her style.  If only she doesn't miss a gate.

Everything is sacred.

If there are 80 competitors, somebody has to be the last. It's better to be the one who is already the first for her own country, regardless.

I hope Marjan does better too, I have a feeling she will.  The other guys, one guy was 60th, did better than some other skiers but they lost to the Israeli skier!  Does Israel even have a mountain?
