by Shifteh Ansari on Sat Oct 17, 2009 11:53 AM PDTEstablishing and maintaining solid diplomatic relations with ANY state is in the best interest of ANY government. Islamic Republic's idiotic stance vis a vis other states has brought nothing but loss and humiliation to Iran. In that vain, we should welcome a softening in Iran's position, something that Lavrov is now saying on behalf of Iran.
The change in Iran's stance, however, comes from its recent struggles to make up for its lost legitimacy vis a vis its own people. IRI is trying hard to compromise on its international relations to deflect attention from its growing problems in managing Iran. I am reminded of what some people have been saying over the past 30 years--"if threatened, Islamic Republic of Iran will be willing to legalize prostitution and alcohol just to stay in power."
Iran is in the hands of IRI right now. I support any peaceful stance the IRI might take to end Iran's isolation and threats on its people's lives. But not for one moment can I forget the violence the IRI has unleashed on its own unarmed citizens. Their days are numbered, Ostaad. We have no other choice but to wait and see, but we should not forget. To its own people, Islamic Republic of Iran has lost legitimacy since the June elections.
Your hunch maybe correct...
by Ostaad on Sat Oct 17, 2009 11:11 AM PDTIn an Octover 15 interview with Charlie Rose, Dan Meridor who is a very influential Likud minister, Knesset member and an insider (khodi) made a stunning remark that Charlie Rose even asked him to repeat.
Meridor pointed out that Israel ultimate goal was for Iran not to build nukes, as opposed to pursuing a civilian nuclear program aimed at supplying fuel for power generation. He went on to say that Israel was ready for any deal and he left it at that.
If there will ever be a breakthrough in between Iran and Israel, it will be a resounding victory for Russian diplomacy and a lot of eggs on the faces of the collective "Western Powers" for their amateurish schoolboy-level diplomacy vis-a-vis Iran.
Nobel peace prize for the Lavrov, here I come.
