Iranians selectively barred from Swedish universities

The seemingly biased measure is actually part of the 2007 EU regulation that was passed in connection with a 2006 UN resolution concerning sanctions against Iran. Sapo spokesperson Patrik Peter told TT: “It concerns not only that which is directly affected by nuclear weapons, but also aerospace technology.”

Sveriges Radio reports that Sapo, and two other government agencies, sent letters to seven Swedish universities alerting them to the threat. The letter noted that masters and PhD studies involving technology related to nuclear weaponry or the rockets that carry them could end up in the hands of the wrong people.

Patrik Peter said he was unsure if the restrictions would result in all Iranians being banned from Swedish universities. Nor does Sapo have any idea how many Iranians will be affected by the new measures. Iranians do, however, comprise the largest group of foreign students at Chalmers who are enrolled in masters programs, with 120 admitted for the autumn 2008 term alone.

The reason I'm not answering...

It's always something, isn't it?

Remember how I used to call you an IRI supporter and everyone used to gang up on me to say I was imaging things? You notice how that doesn't happen any more? :D

My reply was to second Ms. Little Tweet's comment on this one from Mr. mahmoudg:

either sanctions or war

by mahmoudg on

Can't have the cake and eat it too.
If people dislike a war with Iran, then sanctions would be the other
way to go.  The world will not sit back and see the pariah regime
in Iran continue on its current path.  We need to support one or the
other.

On sanctions: (& a bit more on Fred)

by rosie is roxy is roshan on

I guess I should add, due to the length and 'passion' of my comment below, that I am against sanctions but I don't like to participate in these discussions because I don't really understand the economics and nuances of the politics behind them and there are people far better qualified than me to discuss them.

I also feel that the issue of sanctions among the expat Green movement will be the most potentially divisive, because although I am against them, there seem to be meritworthy arguments on both sides, so the discussions are very important within the movement.

Between people within the movement and those outside of it, there are underlying ideological issues which at present time are probably irreconcilable, but if there is any hope of reaching an understanding on the sanction, the underlying issues would have to be addressed first.

Which is why I tried to open up the discussion with Fred on the validity and place of the Left in Iranian politics on the Dabashi thread, since he voiced his opinion that the Left was a necessary counterbalance to the right in a democracy. However, although this is my exact viewpoint and main ideological stance as a moderate Socialist, he completely dismissed me as a 'Lefty' (meaning pseudo, apologist, for him.)  instead of a LeftIST (valid stance for him..), didn't hear a word I said, totally disregarded my fairly well-known work on human rights in Iran here (SCE and labor movement in particular) and then proceeded to regularly start calling me a...you guessed it.

Anyhow I don't think this comment needs a reply. I think most people here get me on it. As for the Left issue in general, I am working on a post on it on the currently most discussed thread on Samsam's blog. So I don't really want to get into it here.

Take care,

r.

I was replying to this thing here that you said:

that is called TREASON, to side with any other country or organization against ones owncountry. No matter what.

Q and Jaleho have both side with the Islamic Republic, against the United States. Jaleho has done it openly, and Q has done it on the sly.

Jalho says she is American. And says it proudly. Q won't answer that question, but I guess we can assume he is American.

So, did you mean it when you said "no matter what"?

I'm not asking about whether or not the US would charge them with treason. We both know that isn't going to happen. I'm asking you to clarify your position. Because I think we both know that the islamic Republic WOULD charge a lot of the people on this website with treason. The IRI would probably charge MOST of the people on this website with treason, for things they ahve said in the last couple of months. And it kinda looks like you are saying that's what they deserve?

What am I missing?

Last I checked, US constitution protects freedom of speech, however distasteful it might be.

Even though I am in total disagreement with Mr. Q's political stance, I do not see him having said or done anything that can be construed as treason to US. Do you?

Waiting for a verdict from you as to whether or not it would be appropriate for the US to charge Q and Jeloho with treason?

A simple "yes" or "no" will suffice. Testimonials about their conduct and character are for an impartial jury to hear.

Or is it only treason when Iranian-Americans act against the interests of the Islamic Republic? Because, it seems like Iranians who have US citizenship and choose to live and work in the US have a higher obligation to the US than they do to Iran. Do you disagree?

ex programmer craig

What are you going to do

by ex programmer craig on

What are you going to do about it?

I'm not going to do anything about it, Q. You are doing it for me. When so many enemies of the west end up in the west via student visas, it's very hard to tell westerners that western universities don't need to be vigilant when screening applications. And since your post here is just a big whine about Iranian students being discrimated against I think it's very fitting that most of the people who have commented here are potentially dangerous Iranians who took advantage student programs in the past.

So, keep talking Q. And Mola. And Jello. Let today's Iranian students see how much they owe previous generations of Iranian students who came to the west.

And Q... you didn't answer teh question. Are you American?

Q

ex programmer, yes I came with a fake student visa

by Q on

Back then, nobody checked visas, so I came in very easily for free. I just told Pan Am, I forgot my ticket and they let me on the flight.

Then, I overstayed my visa and never got a Green card and have been living illegally and getting lucretive jobs without paying taxes but I continue to hold on to my Iranian citizenship.

I use public emergency rooms as my second home and get the best health care in the world for free. I got three Ph.D.s and a DDV all paid for by public funds.

I lobbied for universal health care and believe complete government control. Now that we have a President who was also an illegal Kenyan immigrant, we're going to tear down the borders and allow any visitor straight citizenship, no questions asked.

My extended family and all my friends are currently waiting in a FEMA camp ready to take advantage of the freedoms in the US.

What are you going to do about it?

young Iranian students who are looking for an opportunity to study abroad and create a better future for themselves.

Is that how you infiltarted the west? With a student visa? Because, it seems to me that you might ant to shut the f@$ up about that if you are serious about supporting the wishes of Iranian students to study abroad. Know what I'm saying? :p

Iran and Iranians will survive, with sanctions or without it!

by Mola Nasredeen on

Fred The Zionist lacky is at it again, spewing hatred and violence as soon as he hears somebody criticizes his beloved country Israel. What can you expect from somebody who opens his umbrella when it rains in Tel Aviv. He prescribes war and destruction as usual.

Iran and Iranians will survive. Iranians have survived many disasters during their long glorifed history and a shit of a country like Israel will not be able to bring her down. The day will come when Americans will wake up and kick Israeli lackies out of their political system and free themselved from the Zionists destructive influence in their lives. I do believe in that and can't wait to see that day.

First thigs first

by Fred on

As soon as the barbarian Islamist cutthroats are out not only Swedes, the rest of the civilized world will be lining up to beg to have super-bright Iranian students attend their cash starved Universities.

For the time being in order to have any not yet tortured, raped, murdered Iranian students left to study and rebuild the devastated country which is the legacy of the Islamists, all efforts and attentions must be focused on kicking the Islamist cutthroats out.

And to the aged Islamist wedding photographer who cannot compose a coherent sentence without throwing an AIPAC/ Israel or some connection to the Jews in it.  Yes even your nemesis will be vying even harder to stay in the good graces of Iranian people and its vast influence and connection will open many doors and opportunities for emancipated allied Iranians.

And that is heck of a lot more than what your Islamist baggage of Syria, Hezbollah, Sudan, HAMAS and a long list of freeloaders have had to offer Iranians. Now do some more of your typical Islamist demagoguery, you know you want to.

Q

Anything to escape responsibility, right Fred?

by Q on

Sure, poor kids' dormitories attacked, they are now also barred from Swedish Universities.

Fred jan, is this the kind of "help" you and AIPAC have in mind when you wholeheartedly endorse sanctions?

You can try your usual personal attacks and change the subject if it makes you feel better, but you're not fooling anyone.

Fred

Total sanction

by Fred on

A great start for the concerned Islamists would be to ask their rabid brethrens to stop raiding Iranian students’ dormitories in the middle of the night, kidnapping, raping, torturing and murdering them.

There is no shame with the Islamists/Anti-Semites and their likeminded lefty allies including their aged Islamist wedding photographers. to quicken the overthrow of this Islamist cutthroats republic total sanction needs to be implemented.
