Press tv speaks for itself

The past few weeks have seen a British media campaign against the supposed mouthpiece of Iran, the channel I work for, Press TV...Those of us who work here do so because Press TV attempts to broadcast the truth... t is true that we are state-funded (like the BBC World Service) but that does not mean we slavishly follow the Tehran line...I  do not agree, however, with everything the Iranian government does. For example, I support the right to peaceful protest and the right of journalists to report freely. I also don't agree with everything my employer does, but I guess if I insisted on agreeing 100% with my paymasters then I would be down at the jobcentre signing on... What everyone must understand is that Iran is a country under threat and countries under threat restrict freedoms...I'm not saying we are perfect – I am sure we have made mistakes and will continue to make them in the future. Entrenched attitudes need to develop, a tolerance of different views needs to become the norm. But quite frankly that will inevitably happen once the west accepts the Islamic Republic for what it is... >>>

The press man and his paymasters

by rosie is roxy is roshan on

My take on it...you have to look at the whole thing. I've chosen the parts I did carefully and it's awkward because there's limited space in the box. There's all kinds of other crap in the article but the word that made me read this very carefully was...

paymasters.

The whole thing of course sounds ridiculous, so illogical, but please ead the part I iI bolded carefully. The man speaks English as well as I do. The word he chose is "paymasters". No one uses that word. Then he says, if he INSISTED on (fill in the blank, anything...anything at all...) he'd be down at the job centre...

Resign..resign, he says...hmmm...someone held a metaphorical gun to his head in the form of a pink slip and made him write this to prove his loyalty.

And I think Guardian knows it. And I think that's why even though they included the italicized disclaimer at the very end saying he spoke as an individual and not as the voice of Press TV, they called the piece "Press TV speaks for itself.."

It's...a pun...

Get it?

--------------

I have been checking press tv almost every day this past month and I have noticed and remarked on the obvious hatchet jobs done on many articles, reflecting arguments and deep schisms within between the reproting and ging to press. Well it looks like one faction's winning.

I wonder which.

____________

It's like...a forced confession in reverse. That's my take on it. Maybe I'm wrong.

And maybe I'm not.

Okay Alex I doctored it a bit,

by rosie is roxy is roshan on

changed the super title to get off of the comic relief thing, at the end of the day however you slice it or dice it ain't funny.Over and over I keep looking at it..

now..he is not a slave..but he has a master..a pay master..but he already told you who pays him...IRI..

so it's also possible that IRI pressured Press TV to write to the Guardian and Press TV came up with this themselves as a group...although, like I said, I saw that schism factor before....so that makes that idea strange..but..

I mean,, it doesn't evens say what the guy's job is, reporter?senior  ditor? janitor?...Look, whatever's going on here...iy drrmd yo vlrst yo mr yhsy there's pressure involved, more like...coersion, and there's layers and layers of meaning...and given the current surrounding events...it's deeply disturbing.

 To me.

Red flag..

by rosie is roxy is roshan on

Alex,

the red flag was 'paymaster.'

Initially of course I'd leapt upon this intending to excoriate the a-hole. But to do that I really did have to read it carefully...or it wouldn't have been..'kosher.' So the word 'paymaster' struck me. As I said, this man is clearly as fluent in English as you or I and there is no human being on earth who is an English speaker who uses the word paymaster as a normal word. None.

So I started to re-read it, and I noticed the words 'resign' and 'job centre' very close to 'paymaster' when in point of fact there was no need whatsoever to mention leaving the job, any more than there would've been to talk about...boluga whales. And well ...he more closely you look the more you'll see. I treally do think so.

Now. Having said that, this doesn't mean the guy is an 'ethical' journalist by your standards (or mine or whoever's) but definitely not an 'idiot' as much as you said at first. But you have to remember, and I can show you if you want..as I said below, I've seen BIZARRE hatchet jobs done on press tv writings especially closer to the time of the major protests that to me screamed SCHISM. Power struggle! War in the editing room!

And why WOULDN'T press tv be as split as the Majlis and Qom and everywhere else? That wouldn't make sense. So...I take that as a given, that there are deep and ugly schisms. And the way things have played out, the hardliners have lost control over so many things..the clergy, the professors...the ONE THING they have GAINED control in is media and communications censorship. And THAT'S what they NEED to cover up the loss of control. So they would focus ENORMOUS amounts of time and energy on controlling this.

And...IR is now number 1 in imprisoned journalists above CHINA...and the ones they keep in prison are the Iranian ones, not the foreign ones. So Alex we really don't know what else these 'paymasters' said to him. all we know--or all I feel I know--is that he did his damned best to tell the world that these people are his 'masters'..That he writes this under duress. And so I don't feel I am in a place to judge him for his decision to comply or not in the writing of this article. It's almost like a forced confession.

______________________

Now as to whether he's a terrible human for ever having worked with press tv, well again, I don't know him. Perhaps he WAS. Perhaps this experience of the protests and the killings changed him, as it did others. Or did he start thre under the Reformists in the hopes that he could effect change? I don't know.

All I KNOW is that NO ONE who's completely fluent in English uses the word 'paymasters' under normal conditions. I don't believe I've ever used that word in my entire life...

We're not slaves, he says.

But we have masters..

I like you too...

by alexarjomand on

but I think you are reading too much between the lines.  If this guy was a proper journalist, he would not work for a news outlet that is sponsored by a criminal regime that brutalises its population.  He is even more of a disgrace if he is putting his name to an article that he has been forced to write by his "paymasters"...

No no no you're not getting the point..

by rosie is roxy is roshan on

you didn't read my post. I don't think yuo even looked at it.

He's NOT an idiot. He did this under threat of forced resignation. And he managed to convey, to anyone careful enough to catch it, the situation.

Now granted, it requires a LOT of care, but Guradian got it and I explain how I know and how they're trying to tell you so in my post.

I got it because I'm a 'mini-Guardian' here. I had to read it very carefully before posting because that's what I try to do and I also have extensive experience these past weeks scrutinizng press tv items with a microscope.

Which I also explain above.

So before your blood boils, could you please do me a favor?

I like you very much but in essence this is 'my' threadl, so if I offer extensive commentary, that should be considered part of the item for someone like you who's a 'newsy' poster like me and so we've kind of been establishing a..relationshoip of sorts..

so...at least do me the favor of SCANNING my comment on my posting before writing on my thread, Could you do that for me please...?

The ONLY thing here, as far as I could finally see, that is NOT comic relief about it is that this guy's head is facing a chopping block BECAUSE...

well...scan my comment if you don't have time to read it...

thx

This is not comic relief!

by alexarjomand on

It makes my blood boil that idiots like this get a forum to expound their views.  All the so called "reporters" associated with PressTV are losers who could not get better jobs elsewhere.  Apparently Cherie Blair's sister is one of them too.  Amazing how some people do not even have a modicum of self-respect.
