The southern Iranian city of Shiraz stages a controversial play starring seven women who face the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Directed by Sirous Mahboudi, the production of Rebirth has opened at Abu Reyhan Hall and has been warmly welcomed by audiences.

The performers appear on stage handcuffed and accompanied by prison guards, ISNA reported.

A life in the theater, a death on the gallows

And now let us turn to more cheerful things that are happening in Iran.

Even Press TV thinks this is sick enough to put a question mark after the title.

I can't wait to get tickets.

I have been thinking about it.

Press TV got the story from IRNA. IRNA are not the most sensitive guys on the block.

For sure the handcuffing and the guards on stage is all part of the piece, for all we know the piece itself was developed among the women with the author.

It's probably a very intense statement on captivity and the human spirit but in the reporting it got to sound grotesque and dehumanizing.

As well as absurd.

You have to be very careful with these Islamic Republic news sources. They are often very scrappy and none too bright.

The good ones you have to rerad between the lines, you always have to look for hatchet jobs in the editing, and the worst ones you have to figure out entire missing pieces.

No,

it is supposed to be true. And that the play is successful, that is also true.

My comment was supposed to be funny, as in (literally) gallows humor.
