Iran's World Cup hopes in jeopardy after draw

Iran's World Cup hopes were in jeopardy after conceding a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw in its final group qualifying match at South Korea on Wednesday. An own goal early in the second half put Iran up 1-0 and on course for at least a further qualifying playoff, but Park ji-sung's 81st-minute strike left Iran depending on North Korea winning away at Saudi Arabia in Wednesday's later qualifier. If that match at Riyadh is drawn, Iran is eliminated. A North Korea win would give Iran third spot in Group B, and a further two-legged playoff against the third team from Group A — either Bahrain or Uzbekistan depending on the result of their Wednesday qualifier.

It's over. No World Cup 2010 for Iran

by azadi55 (not verified) on

After the Saudi's tie game (0-0) with North Korea, Iran is officially eliminated from the World Cup 2010 contention.

I would have loved to cheer for our team melli in World Cup, but let's face it, they didn't really do good in their group. A record of 2-5-1 is just not good enough for going to world cup. If they had one more win, instead of 5 draws, they would automatically advance. Well, I guess we have to wait till 2014, hopefully by then there will be more support from government for our players.
