The first National Islamic Congress in the Netherlands was held last Saturday in Amsterdam and attracted young Muslims from all over the country. The most prominent speakers at the congress belonged to the fundamentalist Salafism movement.
"I have come here to deepen my knowledge about Islam", says Dutch Moroccan student Hisham. "I already knew some of the speakers from the Internet. This is a great chance to see them live and perhaps ask them some questions." New generation
Hundreds of young Dutch Muslims walk around Amsterdam's Apollo venue from lecture to lecture, or hang around the bookstalls where books about Islam are sold in Arabic, Dutch and English. Some of them wear traditional or modern Muslim outfits, others plain Western clothing.
The Amsterdam Institute for Islamic Studies is proud to have organised what they call 'the greatest Islamic event in the Netherlands so far'.
"A new generation of Dutch Muslims has grown up which is eager to gain more knowledge about Islam", says the director of the Institute, Saoed Khadjé. "This congress is meant to address the issues that interest them."
