Iranian film industry thriving, Hollywood learns

In Iran, "the language of movies" has thrived since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, despite strict censorship laws, said Duke professor Negar Mottahedeh, author of "Displaced Allegories: Post-Revolutionary Iranian Cinema." A number of post-revolution Iranian films have screened at international film festivals, and some, such as Abbas Kiarostami's "Taste of Cherry," have won international awards.

capt_ayhab---Iranian cinema

I loved the color of Paradise and can't wait to see his next film. The Time for Drunken Horses, although was powerful in the social and educational way, was a bit too harsh for me.

The core Cinema as an art form in Iran has evolved, we have to be able to translate those high level codes in to a more simplistic pop art for the enjoyment of the Iranians as a whole. We are very behind in comedy or mystery films and scripts. We have done well in tragedies, which is simpler since we are the definition of a that word as a nation ;)

If in the near future the Iranian directors are able to translate the pop art of the film in to comedy, I believe that the Iranian film industry will blossom in the entire region and some parts of Asia. We do have a background in social comedy in our literature, but their codes needs to be broken so it can be formulated for the Cinema.

Historically we have been interested in making fun of accents or the nationalities of the Iranians, we need to pass that and mature up. I am waiting to see a director to approach this path successfully.

In Art of film making we have done great, in pop culture of cinema we have failed so far. Let's wait and see how it turns out.

Allow me to suggest couple of extraordinarily beautiful movies. Color of Paradise, and Drunken Horses.

You can find both in Blockbusters, you will not regret spending few hours watching them.

censorship

So true when it comes to restriction, or actually censorship more like it.

I never WAS fan of Iranian [Abghosht and dizi] type movies, but the movies they have been making, despite all the censorship, has many qualities. Screen plays, cinematography, and pots are often beautiful. I suppose the telling is true that during the religious suppression art and literature flourish. One can notice this in music, cinema, paintings, photography and literature.

My all time favorites Iranian films are  Color of Paradise, and Drunken Horses. I swear I have perhaps watched them 10 times or more.

Iranian movie industry is

by OmidKarimi on

Iranian movie industry is often limited to sensetive emotional house movies, with often a sad plot or ending that always involves some Iranian women clad in hejabs crying alone in a bedroom. Im not a fan of them, but some gems are starting to show lately.

I liked the TV series "Zero Degree" for example, you can watch a part by clicking here

The problem is also that the government does not strictly enforce international copyright laws, so gaming, film and music industry is not that profitable in Iran, so the industries suffer.

I'm glad there are some restrictions about not exploiting women!

by gol-dust on

Sex, sex should not be in our movies! It only brings more devastions to our familes and the society as a whole. May be we should remind ourselves and the world about our true cultural heritage. Let's appreciate what we have!

The youths in Iran have forgotten, or never learned, about their  own treasurs. They think anything western is better than what they have! Unfortunately, due to extreme pressure from the regime, they naturally fall into the western laps!

We have to be very careful in our dealings with holllywood, since they never teach anything moraly good! just sex, sex, and violence.

Let's not forget, through movies US got so influential (larger than life) around the world! Contrlloing the world's minds and hearts and glorifying America! So, we really don't want to fall into their trap! Learn from them the art of movie making, get the latest equipment and technology, but write your own stories reflecting your own proud or not so proud Iranian heritage!

Let the world know Iran is not what they see on the news every night, or 300! We have a lot to offer to the world and our own citizens through the movies! Best of luck to our movie people!

I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek

Hi Captain

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on

About this, I will tell you one thing I read in HONEYMOON IN TAYRAN, which was one director who noticed that during the presidency of "moderate" politicians in Iran, the movie rules are much stricter, because those moderates want to cover their buns. However, it is the opposite when conservatives are around because they also want to appear "fair" and open. Maybe that is why Ahmadinejad won ? Maybe that is why he will be president again? All the movie producers will endorse him until he dies :)
