According to Reuters, while state-run television reported that a long-range missile was fired, the Fars News Agency said an anti-ship air-to-surface missile, with a range of 110 km. had in fact been tested. The latter report cited a missile having far less range than the Shihab-3 missile which Iran says can reach as far as Israel.

besides

Most of the technological advances do come from defense related industries, as it has been case in US and western world.

Other option of course would be to BUY them from Russia or black market. We might as well make them ourselves, and create the necessary industry for them.

My thinking

Agreed with both you gentlemen, however I do believe that defense of country should not be compromised at any shape or form. Recall the fact that Iran has no air force to speak of, so missile defense becomes so much more critical for the country who is surrounded by hostile and volatile countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan and such.

Abarmad - let me clarify.

by Mehdi Mazloom on

It is a known fact that, this despotic regime in Tehran spends hundreds on millions of dollars to support Hamas, Hizbollah. This regime also spends untold sums on subversion of other Arab governments. Egypt, Jordan Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, oh ho, Lebanon, and others. While there is not enough money to develop Iran's own industrial and technological infrastructure where 30 million young Iranian can find decent jobs.

When an oil rich country like Iran is forced to IMPORT 40% of its petrol from Kuwait, When Iranians drivers are forced to live with rationed Gasoline (I believe 100 liters a week?), While the country exports more then 4M bbl every day. That by itself should raise important question about the economic policies of this backward regime.

The mention of N. Korea was presentred as the epitomy of corruption, starvation, where only the few provilaged have access to better standard of living. In N.K, the poverty, hunger and oppression is so rampend that, any drop in their GDP is meaningless.

I am all with you on that. The economic model of the Islamic Republic is a capitalistic model. You are allowed to start any company and do whatever you like to make money.

However for the capitalistic model to work, the trades need to be established. Therefore based on your own argument, unless you are promoting a socialist state, you are advocating a free trade and open border policies.

Iranians and the Islamic Republic is all for that.

Iran spends less than 5% on its military, I believe. You may check the CIA fact book for the exact number, which could be less.

How about "Test Fire" a new economic model

by Mehdi Mazloom on

It is obvious that the policies of THE biggest Akhmag (made'-nejad) in Tehran had failed big time.

How about Iran will divert some of the money wasted on ill fated military ventures, expensive nuclear military program, and interference in other countries affairs, Instead, invest in the country's faltering economy there. Numbers don't lie. Inflation runs at 25% for god sake, unemployment 27%. That is staggering. Only countries like Noth Korea can sustain such numbers, not an advanced country like Iran, nor any state for that matter.
