a story about mother & iran

I did not know what Iran was, or what it represented. For me, it was an unintelligible jumble of emotions, from shame and resentment to love and sadness. It was like being in an abusive relationship with someone you can neither love nor leave.

In my mother, a fear stripped bare

by Alexander Lezhen (not verified) on

This story touched me. It was well written and sincere. I lost my mom when she was 53 from breast cancer. I also immigrated to the United States young.
Thank you for sharing this story and let world know how suppressed woman are still in this world.

look a little more closely

Many people go through this. What is interesting is that the author did not recognize her mothers inner experience until she was dying and her defenses were stripped away? Perhaps she was a bit too sheltered, or maybe her mother was not aware of how the past affected her- because it affects us all, only in different ways. I think the piece was well written. I also think when kids are so privileged, they can be emotionally ignorant to what is going on around them, even if it involves mom or dad.

one of the better

Modern Love columns, as i read the story and wanted to meet your mother (who wouldn't want to meet someone that free about herself in the midst of terror) i realized she was in the past. Make the most of your exposure to a mother who was comfortable in her own skin.
