"Ferdowsi: from NASA to Paradise"

Congratulations to Bobak Ferdowsi, flight director of NASA, and all at NASA on their Mars rover Curiosity landing this week! What a week for people of Iranian heritage. Iran wins Gold for "Strongest Olympian" at the London 2012 Olympics (thank you Salimi) - and then, a young, Iranian-American, Bobak Ferdowsi, catapults many of our hopes and aspirations!

"Ferdowsi": If NASA wanted a Persian name in Space - could you get more honorable than "Ferdowsi"? That was so serendipitous to me, and that fact alone, had me thrilled - add to that the joy I felt for NASA and their Mars landing, and it  was overwhelming.

"Hair": Most of you will know by now that Bobak Ferdowsi swiftly  went on to become an internet sensation!!!! The guy who made NASA cool again - with that haircut! From kids aspiring to be scientists - to thousands of marriage proposals etc. When reading through the fans' words, I realized that it was also something in the warmth of Bobak's smile, as well as the tears he shed when Curiosity landed,  that had captivated them, together with that "hair"!!

HAFEZ: For today's post, I wanted to include "Ferdowsi." First - a little tid bit on the word. Most reporters this past week  had no idea that Ferdowsi is the same word as Paradise. "Paradise" and the Mars landing!! What an incredible juxtaposition.  F replaced P in Persian after the Arab invasion - so you get "Perdowsi" which is essentially the same word as Paradise, which in Iran was a "walled garden." Iran did produce the world's first gardens of Paradise, after all. (Penelope Hobhouse's book - "Gardens of Persia" outlines this history magnificently. I highly recommend it.)

Today's Beyt/Couplet not only contains the concept of "Ferdowsi" but takes it further.  A peacock comes into it - Are you kidding me, Hafez joon? With all the talk of Bobak's hair? Yes! Hafez threw in a Peaccok!! The Beyt is a celebration of a beloved that Hafez is physically describing, her hair, her rosey cheeks. He then wants to compare the image of the beloved's hair crowing her face  to the image of a Peacock landing in heaven. Peacock's were consdiered heavenly birds - "morgheh beheshti." Hafez draws a parallel between the beautiful hair of his beloved, perched atop her rosey cheeks, and the concept of a heavenly Peacock landing in the gardens of Paradise.

زلف مشکین تو در گلشن فردوس عذار

چیست٫  طاووس که در  باغ نعیم افتادست

Zolfeh meshkin-eh to dar golshan-eh Ferdows-eh ezar

Chist? Tavoos keh dar bagh-eh na'im oftadast

Your musky jet-black hair perched atop the rosebed of the garden of thy cheek

Is what? A heavenly Peacock that into the garden of Paradise has falllen

Bobak Ferdowsi too, "has fallen" and landed in the gardens of NASA, proudly wearing his fabulous hair. Bobak then went on to add his heavenly touch and land NASA's rover on Mars. Like the Peacock in the garden of Heaven - Curiosity  has also landed on the red, dusty surface of planet Mars. via our own Bobak Ferdowsi. Congratulations!

I write this as I'm getting ready for our Saturday "Learning from Hafez in DC" gatherings, in Washington. These classes are taught in cycles of 6-8 Saturdays and last month, we reached our 100th Hafez student. 100 Iranians, either too young to know Hafez, or having forgotten him, coming to savor the wisdom of a national treasure. PAAIA has a proper feature on this class - but below, a YouTube clip for you:

I will be very careful with my concise comment.......

Space programs no longer fall under scientific headings.........any adventure beyond The International Space Station is  first and foremost for US dominance even if it is in cooperation with one or two European countries.........Space programs are now, as they have always been political adventures. Period....

As a nation with wounded pride, we naturally feel entitled to some sort of excitement whenever and wherever we find a successful fellow Irooni, and that's fine......nothing wrong with that feeling......until it starts to obscure our sights........

Thus.......it's OK to be proud of Babak, as our fathers had the right to be proud if there was an Irooni among Christopher Columbus' sailors......but his cool cat kinda image shouldn't fool us to the extent of endorsing the "US Inc" dominance in space..........I don't want to see Babak's face appearing in a commercial for the "Martian Pepsi".............

Now, one thing is for sure........not all but some by-products of space programs are known to be beneficial to earthly people........and that's really cool..............

Thanks for your beautiful blog.

This was a personal, inspired Blog moment. I loved writing it. Hope you enjoy it - if you don't, that's fine too. The best that I can do is share my own authentic experience of a poem.

Zendanian: Thanks for your comments - these were indeed "creative" observations. I do agree with the environmental concerns... but one success, shouldn't impede other areas that need improving, just my view. These guys have dreamt of being able to land Curiosity on Mars - and I'm happy for them.

Demo: The beauty of Hafez is  that nothing is "out of order" - his plurality is sublime - which is why he appeals to such a wide spectrum. No one has a claim on the man, and that's my personal take. "My Hafez" vs. "Your Hafez" - there is no my way or your way - that's been the biggest lesson I have learned from Hafez. That it is not up to us humans to say what is "100%" right or wrong - as you have undertaken here. But thank you for your views, nevertheless.

Some people obviously have never heard of "creative writing"

by Zendanian on

As much of a strech this blog might be, it perfectly fits within the standard definition of 'creative writing.'

"Creative writing can technically be considered any writing of original composition."

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_writing

What could be more original than a Mohawk haircut, for a NASA staff of Iranian descent, and another Iranian writing about him?

And for all those stuck up idiots who insult Bobak; they all should seek a doctor first, since they probably have something stuck up their fundament, but they don't know it, yet.

On the substantial side of things: as our human civilizations stands at the moment, with the global enviornmental catastrophe at hand, can't help but to have serious doubts as to the end goal of any space exploration.

If we still heven't learned how to keep our own little planet clean and sustainable, what are we going to do with Mars? Turn it into another dysfunctional Earth?

As Iraj Khan would say: " just asking?"

Cheers

An Out of Order Blog!

by Demo on

With all the due respect, like your writing about the Polo game before, you have it all wrong again this time! Babak is an idiot! Mars is no heaven! NASA is a bankrupt US government agency! Pardis in Farsi is a better name to equate with Paradise in Engish besides Arabic names of Ferdows or Rezvan. Hafez never ever had thought his heavenly poem would be abused this way. And etc. and etc. Altogether 100% out of order.
