What is the next taboo to be broken by Iranian women?!

As you have noticed, posing nude in public and now even engaging in porn activity have been praised as earth shattering events toward liberation of Iranian women by some!

Lets assume there is no such concept as "dignity" for a second and wonder what is the next step in this movement? Where does it end? How low it can go? If Namjoo (a mere hypothetical case) tomorrow releases a music video showing him singing naked, that would be a watershed moment in history of music in Iran I suppose! This is not liberation. This is degradation.

Human procreational anatomical tools and accessories are for natural evolution not socio-political revolution! :-)

There is a domain between one end, restrictive, demeaning and suppressive treatment of women and the other end, exploitative treatment of them as sexual objects. That is the domain of freedom and dignity for women. The fear is that what some have in mind as an alternative to a reactionary & backward culture is nothing but western garbage disguised as freedom and liberation!

Urgent Need to Break These Taboos!

by Faramarz on

Hints of the repressed

by Mash Ghasem on

Are we denying the fact that Patriarchy has a very dominant role is shaping our values and feelings?

Isn't how the women get reduced to "means of procreation" itself a product of male monopoly on female body?

Aren't we in a way supporting Patriarchy by calling all bare women sexual objects?

I asked you a question last night which you did not reply: When an Egyptian woman posts her photos on the net, is she degrading herself or challenging the values and norms of a repressed conservative, reactionary Salafist, Ekhvan set of mind?

Dear Disenchanted

Even if some guys overstate the importance of Golshifteh's act, we should not go to extreme to get sensitive about it. Besides, comparing Golshifteh's act with people like Lindsay Lohan or Kardashian does not make sense. Even if Golshifteh did her posing for pesonal goals, it may have benefits for Iranian women. When discussion is about covering hair, if someone just bares it all, it helps to gradually get less sensitive about covering hair. Overall, I see Golshifteh's posing as positive and even if guys go overboard calling it this and that, that is fine. Sites like CNN, and many other sites have even featured this and all the discussions. You can't just compare Golshifteh's act with any other foreign person.

Thanks Maryam. I suppose you being a female

...free from the "Chauvinistic gaze" bias can be a better judge as what is portraying nowadays as earth shattering achievement for Iranian women.

The overstatements could hardly be more outrageous! Revolutionary, taboo breaking, Paradigm shift, trail blazing for what?! A breast, that no one knows what it had in "mind" when it came out?

I don't deny that Golshifteh may had a political gesture in mind in doing it, or may be it was just a desperation act for getting attention and publicity (and boy that worked) and future work! Or may be and likely both!

But lets face it, birthday suit is what is used often when it comes to "dress for sucess" in Hollywood!

Are we saying Lindsy Lohan recent pose for playboy was also a taboo breaker?! Get real folks! It is an act of depression and cash flow generator. And how about the Paris Hilton and Kardashian sex tapes?! That really broke some taboos!!!!!

You have a GOOD point

Patriarchy, chauvinism? hardly!

by Disenchanted on

 Mas Ghasem has it:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The male chauvinist gaze turns bare women to degradation

by Mash Ghasem on Sun Jan 22, 2012 01:02 AM PST

and objectification. I don't need wiki to tell me what constitutes male
chauvinist gaze, or objectification, as mentioned before, it's a product
of male domination. There are also many natural female functions that
are also very taboo to talk about.

Didn't like my last idea for taboo breaking? Freezing to death in solidarity with prisoners might be a bit demanding.

How about this ; talking about female monthly function.

P.S. There's nothing particular Iranian about Patriarchy. Patriarchy is
a world system that has been in effect since time immemorial. And its
not about to disappear any time soon either. It's not about "our"
culture, it's about the culture of humanity, or lack there of.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mash-Ghasem, "Vallah dooroogh chera", but feminists contrary to your view consider sexual exploitation of women of any kind a sign of Chuvinism. Isn't that irony amazing?!

If a male Iranian artist were to expose his "testies" in front of camera I would have made the same call. So it has nothing to do with male gaze & chuvinism. It has to do with decency and leaving the "procreation means" to achive their "ends" in private! :-)
