Was 1979 a Revolution or A Mass Movement with another name?

What would you call the political turmoil of 1979?

In another article I reflected on these points:

It was only in 1977 that Iranians enjoyed being among the ten
wealthiest Nations of the World.  According to American economists at
the time, Iran was on it's way to becoming the 3rd largest economy in
the world in another 13 years as an industrial nation.  Approximately
50,000 Students had both their University and Living expenses paid for
to study in the United States, approximately another 40,000 students
also had Free Private education and living expenses paid for in European
Countries.  These numbers don't include the money paid to students in
Iran to study in Iranian Universities. (in comparison to the rest of the
planet, iranians were experiencing a Utopia Moment).

It's easy to see why so many people around the world were so impressed
at Irans accomplishments.  Iran was the first country of ancient history
and traditions making it's way into the new industrial world based on
it's own culture.  The Iranian government had even set aside a fraction
of it's annual budget each year in order to provide free healthcare to
all it's citizens by 1982/83.  The thousands of schools, hospitals,
libraries government buildings being built were giving necessary
services to one of the worlds newest and largest (percentage wise)
middle classes.

When I was reading the definition of this word.

trea·son

[tree-zuhn] –noun

1. the offense of acting to overthrow one's government or to harm or kill its sovereign. 2. a violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or to one's state. 3. the betrayal of a trust or confidence; breach of faith; treachery.   treason   n 1. violation or betrayal of the allegiance that a person owes his sovereign or his country, esp by attempting to overthrow the government; high treason 2. any treachery or betrayal

During the French Revolution we all know that the act lead to greater freedom for the french.  So in that case we can say the people did not betray their country or leader as was the case in Iran.

It's safe to say the Shah did not betray any iranian during his lifetime, but worked tirelessly for their freedom.

So maybe 1979 was not a revolution, but an act of Mass Treason?

The Mass Treason of 1979 sounds more fair/honest/accurate upon reflection no.. or does that not sit well with some people?

The revolution

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on

was the second CIA coup. Whenever we have a leader that helps us we get a coup. We need to be more savvy. Even today there are many people on IC who are praising MEK. The Mullahs are bad but not bad enough for the West.

They want something even worse. Meanwhile simpletons are talking about de-listing as if it gives legitimacy to treason. We need to pick our own leaders. Not let EU or CIA or BBC pick it for us. Shah was getting Iran to advance too much for British taste. And the idiot Jimmy Carter was their tool. Along with various revolutionaries. Of course Shah made his own mistakes that allowed it.

The act of treason in 1979 was the overthrow of Bakhtiyar. People got a real democratic leader; but that was not good enough. It did not meet the British and French requirements. Now Mollahs are not evil enough. The AIPAC wants something worse. They want the total disintegration of Iran. Led by Rajavi. Don't fail for it rather go for someone at least half decent like Ebadi. History is repeating itself. Will Iranians be a stupid as in 1979. At least some on IC are.

So would your view be it was a revolution, then overtaken by treachury/treason?

Clearly there is an entire nation in mortal danger and their greater good, safety, freedom has been sold out.

plausible idea...

that would explain how the overwhelming number of democratic movement leaders from people across all professions that had participated in peaceful protest, headmistresses, headmasters, teachers, labor leaders etc ended up with out any protection and were killed by the thugocricy in power today.

The more I look at it, I see Iranians today don't really stand a chance versus the coercive, conspiratorial powers of foreign govt's like the usa.

Think about the wikileaks guy, julian assange, an australian, who has committed no crime at all that he can honestly be tried for yet his situation is tough.  Visa, Master card, paypal all stopped people from using their service to pay him, just shows the tools that US foreign policy has to coerce that ordinary people just get crushed by.

Amirparviz, you need to become more iranian.com Savy!

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

You need to follow the common practice of creating a dozen or so user ID's to comment on your own blog and then pat you on the shoulder and tell you what a genius you are. You can even defend yourself if you were embarassed by a nasty user, using one of your other user ID's!

But enough roodeh drazi from me..

The answer to your question sir is that 1979 revoultion was without a doubt a classical mass revolution. Probably the biggest of the 20th century. The fact that the revolution was hijecked and defeated by the islamist counter revolutionaries led by khomeini , funded & assisted by MI6/CIA, does not alter the fact.

I came up with another description more accurate than revolution

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

The 1979 Betrayal of Iran (on the part of the USA) and High Treason of Iranians (on the part of pro-islamic regime Iranians).

Too long :(

Not saying Treason was entirely caused by Iranians.

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

I'm not saying that the Mass High Treason of 1979 was entirely caused by Iranians, yes mullahs, commies and other extremists were busy causing this high treason with help and funding from outside,

yet on the part of the entire nation, I think it would be more appropriate to say Iranians did allow the high treason to succeed.  I would put the cause more on the betrayal by the United States and European Allies of Iran that met at Guadelope.

Whether it was knowingly or not on the part of the masses of Iranians, people can make a mistake by being duped with lies, deceit, manipulation, though still based on results, clearly it was an act of High Treason.
