Spoken Word

Photo essay: Poets and performers from across Canada

by Azadeh Azad
22-Nov-2009

The Canadian Festival of Spoken Word came to Victoria, British Columbia, on November 10th for a 5-day event. The festival featured the National Slam (over 60 slam poets and performers from across Canada) as well as open mics, workshops, late night showcases, and renowned spoken word artists such as C.R. Avery, Andrea Thompson, the Fugitives and Sherry D. Wilson. These are some of the poets whom I photographed and asked to write a poem for this photo essay.

La perception des âmes désolées.

C'est la  perception des  âmes désolées, et quand le  tourment descend  pour décrire le portrait d'une  ombre matinale je vois, dans  la mer, une ombre infinie qui rappelle la jeunesse.  Francesco Sinibaldi

Lovely!

Azadeh Jan,

This is a beautiful combination of art and words, quite possibly one of the most artistic photo essays I have seen on the site. It was thought provoking and very interesting to follow to end.

My favorite is Number 15. It feels so familiar. Thank you.

My favorite is the verse from #8, "Christ knows human spirits will not survive on omelettes and toast alone"

I am uncomfortable with verses from #1. :O))

Thanks for sharing!

This is wonderful. It is nice tyo have the poetry next to the image.

Victoria, British Columbia what a wonderful place. I was there many years ago and the beautiful scenary on the ferry trip from Vancouver to Victoria could inspire a few poems too.
