Pomegranate paradise

Photo essay: Largest collection of wild and cultivated pomegranate species in the world

Photos of the pomegranate tasting/picking I went last week up near Davis (at the Experimental Orchard) in Winters, northern California. It's a US Department of Agriculture repository for one of the largest collections of wild and cultivated pomegranate species in the world (there are over 400 apparently). This field of pomegranates had over 200 varieties and Ari and I tasted many of them. It was pomegranate heaven for me.

Fruit of the Goddess Anahita

by Ramona on

Did you know that the pomegranate is the fruit of the much venerated Ancient Persian goddess Anahita?

Eating a pomegranate seed is also what kept the young and innocent Greek Goddess Persephone in the underground realm of Hades six months a year, resulting in such immense grief for her mother (Demeter, goddess of the earth), that she brought drought to the earth during the absence of her beloved Persephone.

There's no other fruit like the pomegranate. Its bold red color symbolizes passion; its fertile body contains the seeds of the future, while its shape is like that of a heart. Indeed, if there is to be a fruit paradise of any kind, it's the pomegranate paradise. Thanks for sharing these succulent images....
