Hearts and Hands for Iran

Photo essay: Mega rally in San Francisco in global day of action

by Nazy Kaviani
27-Jul-2009

San Francisco Bay Area came out to express solidarity with Iranians at a Mega Rally in San Francisco's Civic Plaza today.  Thousands of people showed up to listen to moving speeches and performances by a large group of presenters who had politicians, activists, journalists, writers, poets, musicians, and local leaders among them.  I saw so many people I knew at the rally, and thousands I had never seen before.  The Bay Area is well-known for its very active Iranian community, but it was especially heartwarming to see so many Iranians who don't normally attend events such as this.  It seemed the recent events in Iran and the call for the gathering had gripped everyone's heart and they showed up to lend their hearts and hands to the support of fellow Iranians inside Iran.  I would like to thank the organizers, United4Iran, and especially my friend Enayat Katouli who has worked tirelessly on this cause since June.

wow, blown a fuse

by shaayad keh on

I have been reading your comments here and there on Iranian.com and I have (or had) some respect for you up to know.

i am not your usual commenter on Iranian.com or any other site and I do not like or wish to continue back and forth discussions that will get no where.

So, before it is too late i must tell you that I am sorry if you took my simple comments as something that intimidated you to the degree that now you need to know my identity and have already started my treatment..

I respect Dr. Mosaddegh but I just did not know that I have to have his blessing  for posting my opinion here.

If telling what I think needs to be said about the subject causes your reaction match with what is expected from IRI, then good luck with you sir.

I wish you the best.

Mr. Kadivar, You are wrong

by shaayad keh on

No Mr. Kadivar, That was no co existing. I do not know if you were there or not, but I can tell you that a lot of the green movement supporters just tolerated the shiro khorshid flag because the alternative was not an option for our community specially when the world is watching.

You may look at it as a co existing or unity, but I am sorry to tell you that you are dead wrong.

You also may look at it as a victory for monarchists. I will give you that, it was certainly a defeat for the green movement.

I also appreciate the tolerance of the green movement supporters who wisely did not react to this flag.

I also know that many people did not attend this event just because they are tired of having this old flag discussion and many has said that if this continues they will not attend future protests.

That should make you happy i guess.

Good luck with you....

Thank you San Francisco for showing your solidarity with people of Iran. Thank you Iranians worldwide for taking a stand and being counted. This has been the proudest time for all of us during the past 30 years. Those who didn't come this time will come to the next ones from now on, you will see.

Monda

It was great!

I hope that the Next rallies are on Sundays when many people don't have to go to work or waste time looking for parking.

In the meantime, my deep thanks to the organizers, Ross Mirkarimi, musicians, guest speakers from Iran and US...it was all great and I hope it gets repeated soon.

sima

It was definitely better than nothing!

Thanks for this report Nazy -- even though shooting the pictures took you away from hanging out with the IC contingent. It was good to be there. Hopefully this won't be the last one around here but it certainly was not as big as it should have been. What happened to all those weekend chelo kababi crowds? Or maybe next time the organizers should offer free plastic surgery consultation booths to draw more people.

Here's is San Francisco Chronicle's coverage:
