Endless Energy

Abjeez Live in San Francisco

by Nazy Kaviani
06-Dec-2010

After an entirely too long absence, the musical band Abjeez returned to San Francisco Bay Area last night.  What a night it was!  These people sure know how to take their endless energy and transfer it to their audience!  By the time their non-stop action on the stage came to an end, nobody wanted them to leave, and nobody wanted to go home!  Abjeez rocked the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco with their beautiful music, their thought provoking lyrics, and with their very special stage presence.  These sisters are phenomenal!  Of course we had started partying around their San Francisco appearance from the night before, when we gathered to welcome them to the Bay Area at Farzad and Asieh Khabiri's home.  I share photographs of both nights with you here.  Iranian.com friends, supporters, and contributors were all over the place and you can see them in the photographs.  A big thank you goes to Iranian.com volunteers without whose help nothing would happen.  If Abjeez are coming to your town, don't miss them!  What if they are gone again for a long time?  Here are the next shows on their US tour: Los Angeles (Dec 11), Washington DC (Dec 16), Atlanta (Dec 18). Visit ABJEEZ.com for more information.

Special thanks to Faranak Ravon for her help in the photography:

Nazy jaan it may have been Emad.

by Anonymouse on

I don't recall the exact name of the Flamingo guy leading the band and can't see youtube now, but whoever he was he did a really good job.  It was truely a nice infusion of Hamed's voice into this music.

I actually exchanged some pleasantries in email with Hamed after the concert because I was really impressed with his performance and encouraged him to make more of that kind of music with Emad (if that's who he was).  Not sure if he was interested though.  If you see him remind him again to make that kind of music as well!

Thank you!

Thank you so much for your kind comments. The concert was absolutely fabulous and full of life.

Anahid Jan, it was a pleasure meeting your friends and your lovely sister. Let's do it again soon!

Souri Jan, I hope you are able to see the Abjeez live! You will know what I mean by "endless energy!" Heeh! Of course, you know all about endless energy yourself! Jaaye to o Majid o Jahanshah kheili khaali bood!

Jahanshah, you were missed by many and in many ways!

Nader Vanaki, Wow! You must live in some palatial digs! The Great American Music Hall has a capacity of 600! I hope you can go see the Abjeez wherever they perform. They will put a smile on your face!

Anonymouse Jan, Didn't Hamed do the Bam concert and that album with Emad Bonakdar? Emad now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well. Also, I think it was Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam who danced with Hamed. I hope you go and see the Abjeez perform, even if it on a weeknight. You won't regret it!

Cost of Progress, I think the whirling takes practice and concentration, more than drugs. I mean I have seen the whirling dervishes of Konya in Turkey, and that's all they do in their dance--whirl! Also, have you seen Banafsheh Sayyad perform her dance?

Monda Jan, It was so cool hanging out with you that night. We must definitely do it again really soon, and take Sima, too!

Monda jaan you are in one of these pics, right?!

Cool Abjeez!

by Monda on

I felt so energized by Seeing them on stage (Honestly GAMH does not do acoustic justice!). And I wish I had attended the party.

Thanks Nazy jan for posting this as our souvenir from this concert... as If it could be forgotten? :o)

Cost-of-Progress

I remember the dancer guy

by Cost-of-Progress on

I kept wondering how he could spin like that without feeling dizzy...so, you were there? I thought I saw you...(he he, kidding). I think these people are in a trance - I call it high, Nashe'...that is. I dunno, I am not that suphisticated..... And you say he is a dick, that's not good...

Yes that was a very good concert with Hamed and the Flamingo!

by Anonymouse on

I bought the CD and so far have 2 CDs of him and hopefully soon the 3rd one.  Yes I went to the same BAM benefit concert and really liked the way he sang his songs with that Flamingo band, Shahram something.  It was really awesome and my introduction to Hamed.

This other guy Shahram the dancer was also there and I like it and the way he twirled and all while Hamed was singing and the other Shahram playing the music.  Then a while later we went to see the same dancer in his own performance and he sat down to answer questions from the audience, only to insult the audience instead!  So I'll never go to anything he has to offer again, except if they dump him on us as part of another concert!

Cost-of-Progress

Hey Anonymouse

by Cost-of-Progress on

have you heard the BAM benefit concert that Hamed and a few others had put together in Iran? I bought it at his concert in the DC area about 3 years ago (Jefferson High in Arlington). It is a great piece of work. They had it on an MP3 (!!) disc, so I had to convert it so I could listen to it everywhere.

And yes, I agree, Thursday or weekday concerts/events suck for those of us who work for a living....

How come Abjeez's date with DC area is Dec 16th, a Thursday?

by Anonymouse on

Thursday in DC area and Saturday in Atlanta?  There are more Iranians in Atlanta than DC area?  Hopefully on another occasion we can see the SF talents.  So far we've seen Hamed Nikpay and we've liked but no Namjoo or Abjeez yet.

BTW Hamed has a new album out, good for the holidays!

Abjeez-zeh!

Thanks Nazy & Faranak. Looks like -- no, definitely -- I missed out on a great concert and party. The Abjeez are the real deal. People love them for a good reason: Great music, great fun, and great appreciation of their fans. Dameshoon garm.

Souri

Thanks dear Nazy

by Souri on

For this great photo essay. At least now we know what a great event we have missed :-(

It seems that you guys had a splendid time there. Abjjeez look very energetic, as you mentioned. More power to all of you....and Khasteh nabashid.

Nazy jan, thanks for the article and pictures and for everything

by Anahid Hojjati on

Nazy jan, what a night that was! Music, friends and family, food and drinks. You captured the mood in your pictures very well. It is great, you even have pictures of "Mohsen Namjoo" and "Shahrnoosh Parsipour" and other artists who were there to watch Abjeez. Between all the taking pictures and everything, you managed to make sure people had a good time. My sister and I had fun, and it was great to not only see Abjeez but also visit with Iranian.com friends.
