Iran closes main bazaar amid arrests and protests

As authorities scrambled to stop Iran's currency from falling further

DW: Iran's central bazaar has been shut in a dramatic move amid arrests and protests. This comes after Iran's currency dipped to a record low. The main bazaar in the Iranian capital, Tehran, was forcibly closed on Wednesday as authorities scrambled to stop Iran's currency from falling further after it had already tumbled to a record low. Hundreds of police entered the currency exchange district of Ferdowsi, arresting unlicensed money changers and ordering licenced bureaux and shops to close >>>

Robert Wenzel, writing

by Soosan Khanoom on

"Robert Wenzel, writing for Economic Policy Journal, believes the CIA is undermining Iran’s economy by counterfeiting the rial and flooding the country with the bogus notes to create hyperinflation. “The Fed may think money printing boosts an economy, but the CIA knows what it really does,” Wenzel writes.

Although there is scant evidence the CIA is counterfeiting the rial to undermine Iran, there is sufficient evidence the United States is waging financial war on the country.

“As a global-macro analyst, I am frequently asked if war with Iran will come and, if so, when,” writes Jim Rickards, a Wall Street economist and investment banker.

“My answer is that the war has already begun. It’s not a shooting war – yet. What the U.S. and Israel are now waging with Iran is what experts call unrestricted warfare. This is warfare that consists of sabotage, assassination, special operations, psychological operations, attacks on critical infrastructure, cyber warfare and – the most recent addition to the arsenal – financial warfare.”

Very soon dollar will hit 5000 then 10000 , 100000 and then one night you will wake up and it will hit 1 or 2 million toman!

Iran's economy has completely collapsed!!!

All prices have sky rocketed in Iran! People are getting hungry , they can't feed their family and kids!!! Except for people who work for sepah, no one else is getting paid!!!

Soon there will be demonstrations and riots all over ! And unlike the 2009 demonstrations which was suppressed by the regime , this time around people are coming out for their family and kids and nothing could stop them! IRI's end is near!!!

Time is right for them bastard Islamic figures known as akhoond, mulla, hojjatolislam, ayatollah etc now need to be terrorized and eliminated, 1 by 1; from the recent grad of the hozeye elmiyeh Qom to Ali Geda.

Just hope that removal of these bastards does not create a vacuum for the MEK to settle in.

Time will tell.  Hope the people of Iran THINK this time.

  TEHRAN, Iran —

by vildemose on

TEHRAN, Iran — Police threatened merchants who closed their shops in Tehran’s main bazaar and launched crackdowns on sidewalk money changers on Wednesday as part of a push to halt the plunge of Iran’s currency, which has shed more than a third its value in less than a week.

The measures underscore the serious concern by officials facing one of the most potentially destabilizing scenarios, which has been partly blamed on the fallout from Western sanctions over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The economic collapse of a single economy country....

by Roozbeh_Gilani on Wed Oct 03, 2012 07:13 AM PDT

as in Iran, where the entire economy and country's livelihood is dpendednt on a single source of income, Oil, can be extremely fast and entirely up to the decision of the outside forces....

That is exactly what I have been arguing all these years on IC when telling IRI's apologists that a rentier state like Iran with a single source of income, cannot either  be "Independent" , "secure", or sovereign when they touted IRI's so called independence and military credentials as  major achievements of the mullahs.

Don't be Mislead by the UnFree Western Media or IRI on this.

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

The Regime is involved in these non-spontaneous protests organized to get people in the masses to mistakenly think the USA is opposed to the IRI regime and the traders protest is in response to western sanctions. The reality is these were sanctioned from within to let-go of steam as the regime enriches itself more and the people who's role it s to care for are hurt by it.  These demonstrations are not going anywhere and the USA still loves the IRI for Iran, how can it find a better group to meet its grotesque goals.

Soosan Khanoom: so long as Freedom and Justice matter for Iranians, our Intellectuals need to be asking for the King to step up more, not less.  On my responses to Ali Mostofi with a similar misunderstanding to your points, //iranian.com/main/blog/alimostofi/persian-ki...

I agree with Rozbeh here..

by Soosan Khanoom on

The oil and petrodollars are major part of this ... it was before revolution,it is now and it will be in the future regardless of the regime in power. To this add the quest for a dictator hero such as Shah,VF,or the Shahzadeh, which sadly has become part of the Iranian mentality, then you see that we are probably going to be stocked in this mess one way or another.. I just wished that once they are changing the khar paaloon there would be no blood sheds and we would not be witnessing the killing of the innocent people due to all these manipulations..

Also I am not sure what to make out of this PARTICULAR non stop raise in dollar value but the timing somehow reminds me of the October Surprise in the U.S election season ..

And now one may ask what about the nuclear weapon ?? Nuclear weapon my foot... just check this timeline studies on BiBi's warning?

Scott Peterson at the Christian Science Monitor did a useful timeline for dire Israeli and US predictions of an imminent Iranian nuclear weapon, beginning 20 years ago. 1992: Israeli member of parliament Binyamin Netanyahu predicts that Iran was “3 to 5 years” from having a nuclear weapon. 1992: Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres predicts an Iranian nuclear warhead by 1999 to French TV. 1995: The New York Times quotes US and Israeli officials saying that Iran would have the bomb by 2000. 1998: Donald Rumsfeld tells Congress that Iran could have an intercontinental ballistic missile that could hit the US by 2003.

Middle Class Panic

by vildemose on

Middle class is panicking and rightfully so.

The immediate cause of currency crisis is a high demand for dollars.

Iranian middle class is very afraid of its future. They are scrambling to save their wealth by turning it into dollar so they can either leave Iran as soon as possible when the opportunity arises or not end up in soup lines when the economy completely crashes once and for all.

The high demand for dollar has increased its value

 Other cuases:

1. A visibly corrupt and economically incompetent
ruling class.

2. Lack of natural checks on regime
misconduct (a free press, free speech and free, open and fair elections).

3. The chasm between visible reality and claims by
state media regarding the IRI’s abilities, popularity, honesty or achievements.

4. Three plus years of police state behavior.

5. Foreign policies tailored to make enemies and
create deep mistrust of the sort that makes the prospect of a nuclear-armed IRI
unthinkable.

6. Sanctions, isolation and pariah status resulting
from the above behavior.

7. Public mistrust of the regime, solidified irreversibly
by events since since 2009.

No easy way out of this one!

Those who said Obama's policy is to appease IRI can now take note!!! Even Ahmadi himself admits that IRI's economic collapse is being caused by the new wave of sanctions!

It's highly unlikeley that they can dig their way out of this one. For it would require tons of cash (foreign currency that is, which they don't have) to inject into the market to bring it back to the way it was.

Ahmadi is taking the heat because with his sudden elimination of subsidies he exacerbated this downward spiral!

Since you mentioned Israel in your comment, you may note that Israel did not participate in sanctions against the white racist apartheid regime of South Africa, nor did it participate in the limited sanctions against Ian Smith's apartheid regime in Rhodesia either. The US only entered reluctantly and had to be arm twisted by Democrats in the US Congress to force the Reagan administration to impose them - and that at the last minute.

Sanctions against Iran are not the same thing as sanctions against the apartheid South African regime. Nevertheless sanctions are an act of war.
