I kind of agree with you Arj when you say:

"Islam in Iran (especially, but not exclusively, Shia sect) has been intertwined with power and state nearly since its inception. It was only natural for it to surface from under the rug when state's power dwindled -- due to both lack of popular support and waning foreign-power sponsorship"

Does the expression Mossadegh-Kashani alliance ring a bell?

Natural course of events!

Islam in Iran (especially, but not exclusively, Shia sect) has been intertwined with power and state nearly since its inception. It was only natural for it to surface from under the rug when state's power dwindled -- due to both lack of popular support and waning foreign-power sponsorship! Just as Christinaity did in the dark ages of pre-reanissance era!

That kind of makes our current era in Iran a renaissance period which explains the Shahin Najafi affair et al... In other words, we're witnessing history in the making and feeling the pains associated with it!

No different role than the Archbishop of Canterbury

The Coronation at Westminister Abbey of Queen Elizabeth II

The Archbishop of Canterbury on the Royal Wedding

Speaking in a short film produced by Lambeth Palace, the Archbishop of Canterbury talks about the sense of hopefulness and generosity which lie at the heart of marriage, and what this also tells us about the 'mystery' and 'delight' which can be found in this life-time commitment. Dr Williams, who will be conducting the marriage ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Friday 29th, also describes the sense of privilege he feels about his own role in the royal wedding.

If there was anyone who done

by Simorgh5555 on

If there was anyone who done irreparable damage to Islam in Iran it was Khomeini. From the accounts of my parents and relatives although Akhunds have always been treated with suspicion people maintained respect for Islam and the Shia Imams. Most people were not exposed to the ugly truth of Islam and to a certain extend we have to be grateful to Khomeini who actually revealed its utter barbarity from the mutilations, stoning, insane superstitions, misogyny and rape of nine year olds. Khomeini was a good Muslim indeed because he practised what he believed in and tried to model his life on the Shia Imams before him such as Hassan and Hussein.

Not deceitful but mystic

If you had read a pae or two from the mystic interpretation of Islam perhaps (only perhaps) you wouldn't have mixed the two.
