U.S. Defense Secretary warns against Iran strike

"You've got to be careful of unintended consequences"

The Guardian: Military action against Iran could have "unintended consequences" in the region, the US defence secretary, Leon Panetta, said on Thursday, hours after Tehran warned that an attack against its nuclear sites would be met with "iron fists". Panetta, who took over the Pentagon's top job in July, said he agreed with the assessment of his predecessor, Robert Gates, that a strike on Iran would only delay its nuclear programme, which the west believes is aimed at making an atomic bomb. "You've got to be careful of unintended consequences here," Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon. "It could have a serious impact in the region, and it could have a serious impact on US forces in the region," he said. >>>

Will Israel Listen is not the REAL question.

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

Israel is a US proxy and will do nothing with out US Approval.  They have been given the Bombs and they may use them soon, but not unless the USA wants it to happen.  The rest is SPIN.  The USA/UK/France may not be able to confront iran with their own militaries, because they want islam in power in iran and love the IRI which they brought to power and keep in power.  The problem for them is the unintended consequences of what to do when IRI targets the USA/UK/France in Response, they need a plan for how to respond while not jeopardizing their #1 Goal of keeping Iran backwards by supporting backwards Islamists hold on Power.

if they can't achieve keeping Islam in power and controling them then they will need to think of pursuing other ways to weaken Iran, the most obvious option is disintigrating Iran, though that requires no fly zones, bombing IRI positions, supplying sepratists with weapons and keeping other powers out like Russia/China/India + (Germany/Japan) which lose with a broken up Iran.  The real risks are too big for the USA/UK/France who are trying to maintain their hedgemony using islamic fundamentalism, which as we can all see they have difficulty containing with out harm to themselves.  Right now with the EU/USA are economically weak, so they may hold off for a few years.  What's clear is they have not been willing to compromise with IRI, so bombing is just a matter of time, when the USA makes the decision.

Many Iranians need to stop listening to the news/media.

Will Israel listen?!?!?!

While Israel has proven to be the rouge nation when it comes to its foreign policy and treatment of its neighbors, they know well that without explicit US backing, they cannot risk go-it-alone with Iran.

The more worrying case is the Israeli element and influence in the US and its politician to hijack US once again and bring this nation yet to another war.

Any chance they get, the Iranians and Syrians denounce the Lebanon based Hezbollah terrorists.

Having its leader praising the wisdom of his master, the Head Rapist Khamenei, and promising to defend the Syrian murdering Battist thugs of Syria is another proof why that is so.

Will Israel listen?

by Jahanshah Javid on

That's the question.

Those who believe Israel would not carry out an attack on Iran without Washington's consent are fooling themselves. I think Netanyahou in particular is perfectly willing to do it without any consideration what the U.S. thinks. He believes the Obama Administration is too weak to deal with Iran and, personally and ideologically, both men dislike each other (to put it mildly).

Throughout its history Israel has done what it thinks is in its national interest. Fear-mongering hawks there have the upper hand. The average Israeli thinks Iran is this close to having a nuclear bomb and would use it to wipe out their country. The perfect recipe for a "preemptive" strike on Iran's nuclear centers.
