Days After Revolution

Storming of U.S. embassy by Mojahedin Khalgh in February 1979, capture of Evin Prison

The Guardian: Gunmen launched an attack on the US Embassy in central Tehran yesterday morning (February 15, 1979, see another clip), providing an example of the gun law that many fear is here to stay for some time. Trapped inside the Embassy during the attack were Ambassador William Sullivan, about 100-150 of his staff and two journalists. Although the Embassy sustained damage, only one person, an Iranian waiter, was killed. Four Americans were slightly wounded >>>

Re choices

by Arj on

Dear VPK, without any intention to get into the chicken/egg argument, I'd like to remind you that Shah had left no choices but Khomeini! I'm not sure what you mean by "picking Khomeini!" As if people had a choice of a secular democratic opposition, but opted for Khomeini! Even Bakhtiar was allowed to present himself as an alternative when it was already too late -- people had already rallied around Khomeini in Tasua and Ashura, and before then, Bakhtiar was either in jail or suppressed by Shah as a member of opposition!

In order to not repeat our mistakes we need to rehash what happened. Yes maybe make mistakes put false blames. Then if needed retract them. But rehash we must. Better that over repeating our past mistakes you know.

I don't want to get in an insutl fest with you. I said those who supported Khomeini are guilty not those who opposed him. Many people supported him and you know it. Now the stuff hit the fan and no one admits it.

Why is the level of discussion on this site so low?

by Hooshang Tarreh-Gol on

So all those women that protested against Islamic Republic from day one, all those unemployed workers who were opposed to Khomeini from the outset, all those national-minorities figthing IR's armed forces,....how the heck did all these people made the decision to follow khomeini. Where were you when they were fighting Sepah? You simply were never a part of them (the people) and never will.

It's simply beyond your cognition.

Shah, SAVAK, Rastakhiz all worked to brign Islamic Republic of Hell to Iran.

I am sorry but people must take responsibily. The people who picked Khomeini are guilty. In the future the 1979 generation will be blamed forever. They make the descision to follow Khomeini.

If Shah was bad fine but why pick an *** like Khomeini? It WAS their fault and no way to get out. Not all but JM; MEK and Meli Mazhabi worked to bring hell to Iran.

Now their legacy will haunt them for all history.

Some people go to any length and blame anyone and anything in order to conceal the culpibility and responsibilities of Shah! These people were not all religious fanatics, they weren't all MEK, Cherik or Mohjahedin either! They just weren't happy with the government policies and had no way of expressing their views through ANY legal political process under the Shah. That is why they turned against him and were eventually fed up, because he was a despot who did not want to listen to his people!

Shah had blocked and destroyed all political avenues of national discourse -- e.g. even peaceful, harmless political parties! The only social institution that he did not have the courage to take on was the Shia Moslim religious establishment which due to the cold war politics and perhaps to some extent superstitious beliefs, he even empowered! He is responsible for what ensued and what he inflicted on our people! People are people, one generation is no better or worse than other generations. So, stop blaming people for that!

Jimmy did more than what you say. He actively promoted Islamism and pushed for them. Not all Democrats are the same. Not one has acted so weak as JC. Form FDR to Clinton they all promoted American interests.

JC is the one exception. With Obama the jury is out I do not know how it will go. But we will before long.

We had a DEMOCRAT in the White House who was too scared to take a full-scale defensive action against these people!

WORST generation in iran's history.....a bunch of idiots who served iran on a silver platter to a group of bloodthirsty thieves an murderers....

I agree that 60's generation in general sucked. Not just in Iran but all around the world. In America they were lazy drug addict ***holes. In Iran whining demanding and full of themselves. Always demanding and never producing.

The difference is that in America they grew up and some got over it. In Iran they ruined a whole generation and possibly more. Who paid: we all did; the war; a lost generation and millions in diaspora. No worse morons ever lived in recent history.

From the idealist Marxists to confused Melli Mazhabi. Not one could even put enough together to figure out Islam and Marxisn don't mix. The simples ideas were beyond their grasp. The worst are the ones who do not to this day admit it.
