Arash Alaei: AIDS Specialist in Prison

Amnesty International demands his release

Dr. Alaei was arrested in June 2008 with his brother Kamiar and they were both sentenced to prison in January 2009. Dr. Alaei is a prisoner of conscience and we have demanded his immediate and unconditional release. Ramadan starts next week so it would be wonderful to generate lots of messages to the Iranian authorities. You can see an interview by Dr. Alaei's brother Kamiar (who was released a few months ago) with AI Italy. An online version of this action will be available on the AIUSA web site shortly. Thank you for your efforts. Best wishes, Elise Auerbach, Iran country specialist, Amnesty International USA:

WeAreBlessed

This a REAL man...

by WeAreBlessed on

A real man takes on hard challenges.

A real man makes a difference.

A real man does the right thing.

A real man lives by a code.

A real man is humble.

A real man helps the weak.

While the rest of us give opinions, sound "intellectual," and live sheltered lives, real men do the difficult work.  The kind of real men, such as Dr. Kamiar Alaei and his brother, gives Iran some hope for the future.

It takes "one hamvatan at a time" to rebuild her...

Let us pray for the Alaei family, in these difficult times.  The family of such men deserves praise.

Footnote: "real man" or "real men" is being used above to mean person(s) of worth and integrity, regardless of sex.

Mohammad and the Matchmaker...

by afshin on

I think Dr. Alaei's arrest has something to do with a documentary made by Maziar Bahari for the BBC a few years ago.  It was called "Mohammad and the Matchmaker" which was about a recovering heroin addict who's infected with HIV/AIDS looking for a wife.  His doctor/friend (Dr. Alaei) tried helping him in this endeavor.  The documentary portrayed an unflatterling image of widespread heroin and opium use in Iran as well as shedding light on the AIDS epidemic the country has been afflicted with.  By most estimated, 1 in 20 Iranians is addicted to heroin, which is an astonishingly high number, particularly in a nation with such strict anti-drug laws.  All the same, the documentary may have miffed the government, and as a result, a thoughtful caring physician has been imprisoned for over three years.  His incarceration is not only a tragedy for he and his family, but a loss to his community and patients.  We as Iranians have a duty to spare no effort to see to this man's unconditional and immediate release from prison.  Please ask all your friends and family members to join in on this campaign.
