Chomsky’s Plea on Behalf of Detained Americans

Call to Iranian authorities to let them go

Robert McKay's blog: Noam Chomsky, an American academic best-known to viewers of Iranian television for his criticism of American foreign policy, made a personal appeal to Iran’s government to release two detained Americans in a video message posted online on Wednesday. Mr. Chomsky called on Iran to free Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, who have been detained in Tehran on espionage charges since their arrest while hiking near an unmarked portion of the Iran-Iraq border in 2009. A third hiker, Sarah Shourd, was released in September, and now leads the “Free the Hikers” campaign >>>

Johnny Dollar - just out of curiosity

by Anonymous Observer on

Is "Zionist" a code word for "Jewish?"  I mean, how would we know what their political ideology is (Zionism being an ideology).  Although we can probably tell if their Jewish by their names, family, etc.  And, of course, you don't think that Chomsky-the darling of anti-Zionist Iranian crowd-- is a "Zionist?"  But if the code word is what I think it is, then yes, he is "Jewish," and in that sense he may have some "sense of brotherhood."  If that's what you're referring to, then why don't you just come out and say it?  I mean, the way you phrase it not to be politically incorrect is confusing.  Certainly,  there are many legitimate arguments against Zionism, but to hold someone's religion or ethnicity against him is simply...well...racist, and, in this case, antisemitic.  So, if I am right in what I assume, then you should use a different code word.  We have a guy here who uses "Yaghoubi" as a code word to show his disdain for Jews.  Perhaps you can use that term as well.

Also, Chomsky has also said many things against attacks on Iranians.  Does that make him a...I don't know...what's a good code word..."IR supporter?" :-)

You know what I'm talking about, right?  It's kind of like his Obama's opponents calling him a "community organizer" in a derogatory way because it's not pc to call him the "N" word.

PS- What do you mean by "falling on deaf ears?"  What should be done if they are in fact Jewish?  What if the Jewish community has approached Chomsky?  So what?  As a community, they have asked someone who has said many things against the U.S. foreign policy toward Iran to approach the Iranian government. Should the detainees be hanged for that?  What are you getting at?

The captured were zionist? just wondering......

if he feels a sense of brotherhood. i am sure he was approached that's why he had to read. Either way it is on deaf ears.

Chomsky is an idealist idiot

by masoudA on

Especially when it comes to US foreign policy.   If his knowledge on Iran and IR is any indication - then he truely needs to stay off politics - especialy international politics.

Having said that - I will not be surprised if IR actually does release the two Americans.....hence buing more time by way of starting a whole new era of NEGOTIATIONS !!   Don't forget Chomsky and IR have mutual friends in London!!

I tend to agree both with Mehraban and G. Rahmanian. He is perhaps trying to regenerate some form of legitimacy for the regime after the post election fiasco, which exposed the regime's totalitarian nature.

Why the heck these guys

by Shokaran on

Why the heck these guys were hiking out there?...Being American and hiking on mountains of Iraq and Iran sounds fishy or at least stupid!

I hope IRI free them but next American hikers around those mountains deserve to be executed!

By the way Down with IRI...

G. Rahmanian

Give & Take!

by G. Rahmanian on

These two young men haven't done anything to deserve imprisonment. I may be wrong, but my guess is, IR officials, finally, want to release them, so why not make a hero out of Chomsky who has been very kind to the regime!

As much as one hopes for the

by khaleh mosheh on

success of this appeal,  even  an intellectual minnow such as myself , can see that asking the IRI  to show humanitarian concern is like asking a pack of  wolves to show concern about the welfare of the flock of sheep they are about to attack. The concept of humanitarian concern is not only alien to the IRI but also in their history they have come to be defined by their complete disregard and hostility to such notions as human rights and humanitarian concerns.

Perhaps Mr Chomsky as an intellectual giant of our time will be able to devise a different strategy for getting Josh and Shane freed from the IRI captivity as his current approach of appealing to the IRI's good nature will not have much success given their beastly and anti-humanitarian essence.

Mehrban

With all due respect

by Mehrban on

Mr. Chomsky your presentations consistently embolden the Islamic Republic.

I hope for the speedy release of Josh and Shane as I hope for the speedy release of many of my innocent countrymen and women who are in the jails of the system that you consistently (maybe unintentionally) strengthen.

merlin

dear all god-fearing, free-thinking, self-valuing Iranians,

by merlin on

here's something markedly different than the anti-Iranian, anti-patriarchal, corrupting, perverting, valueless and so on messages that usually appear in this domain that is run by enemies of its audience, in opposition of its audience wittingly or otherwise. have you ever wondered why, with supposedly almost a million members in this powerful nation, the Iranian community lacks even an iota of political power or influence? further, why are Iran's enemies so powerful in contrast that they seemingly direct the minds, values and behavior of Iranians here and abroad in opposing and destroying almost everything that is inherently and naturally desirable: self-determination, rule of Iran by Iranians, pride, dignity, freedom, our traditional cultures and values that are unrivaled in beauty and power? some of your neighbors literally cheer in your face and pat themselves on the back for the boasted murders of your tribes' scientists and educators. are your people too primitive or base to pursue knowledge and application of nuclear technology? no, clearly, what this tyranny fears is the start of an even playing field. their leashed media boasts daily about bombing and killing entire families waking up for school, work and general service of their communities. this is absolute terrorism. they dont want peace on even terms they want absolute control and power over every aspect of your existence. while they have countless ICBM packed with nuclear warheads, a fine gift from american taxpayers, they propogate propaganda and more destructive attacks against iran for setting up a centrifuge. they fear justice. these are complex issues but realizing that the national community has absolutely no authentic counsel is a good start. The PAAIA is financed by enemies and opponents of Iranians' natural interests. the rosenberg foundation is a good example.

bushtheliberator

the IRI's Leftests apologists all seem so clueless

by bushtheliberator on

The IRI finds Chomsky useful because he is reliably Anti-American, but Chomsky seems to assume that he has some moral sway among the Thugs !

NOTE to Chomsky :: The IRI found the KKK's David Duke useful also, and David Duke may have more sway in the IRI than all the Lefties do.

Maybe Chomsky should ask for the Klan's support for the HUNDREDS of other political prisoners in Iran
