The Guardian: The son of the former Iranian president Akbar Rafsanjani is being investigated by Oxford University after claims that his successful doctoral thesis proposal was written with the help of others. Mehdi Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former head of Iran's state-owned gas company, began a five-year DPhil course in the Iranian constitution at the faculty of oriental studies in October. An Oxford academic has complained that the university's usual high standards have been "subverted" with the help of university insiders to allow Hashemi to study. If proven, he could be asked to leave >>>

by Soosan Khanoom on Sun Apr 03, 2011 08:45 PM PDTI am also suggesting that he has been using his connection if the allegation is true ...... I am not sure about that Basiji's claim that you have quoted.... I still think that the majority of Sharif students if not all are there because they deserve it ...... Some can be pro regime but that does not suggest they are less bright.

by MM on Sun Apr 03, 2011 07:21 PM PDTThe question I have is whether the Son of Rafsanjani was accepted in Sharif university because he is smart or because of his connections. As it is written in the following reference (The Reign of Hard-line Students in Iran's Universities), "A Basij commander has declared a goal of 901,000 student members in the next four years, about one third of all university students." I do not suppose the commander is implying that the Basij will get in Iranian universities because they are smart!
I do not know about the British system, but here in the US, the PhD applicants have to take tough qualifying exams that the true Sharif university students pass with flying colors:

by Soosan Khanoom on Sun Apr 03, 2011 04:29 PM PDTWhoever gets into Sharif University of Technology can easily get to Oxford giving the fact that only brights get into Sharif .......
It seems that he is a graduate of Sharif. So the allegations, if true, might constitute a violation of the rules of not only Oxford but Sharif university as well .....

How about this??
by Solitude on Sun Apr 03, 2011 01:42 PM PDTI'd suggest Mr. Rafsanjani/Bahremani (or whatever his alter ego is known by now a days) to give an "impromptu" interview to his "friends at BBC" even in ENGLISH!!
If he could get through ONE paragraph without reading or rehearsing, then Mr. Kaveh Mousavi should apologize to him.. Otherwise, it is the shameless Rafsanjani who should look everyone in the eye and admit that the only way he could be admitted to this or any higher education institution in the WORLD has been indeed through paying people to do it for him .. which knowing this corrupt family, that’s NOT such a farfetched idea!
As this honorable professor (Mr. Mousavi) says in the video, he absolutely lacks the most basic credentials to be admitted, and it really is such a disgrace for the likes of these “Aghazadehaa” to muddy the reputation of any fine institutions whether in Iran, hiding behind the cloak of his father or any other place in the world for that matter!
