Cyrus Cylinder in Iran

Briitsh Museum lends ancient artifact

AFP: THE British Museum on Friday loaned Iran an ancient terracotta document called the Cyrus Cylinder, after a row in which Iran said it had cut ties with the institution, a senior official said. 'Today the Cyrus Cylinder, which has so far been kept in the British Museum, arrived in Iran,' Vice President Hamid Baghai, who heads the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organisation, told Fars news agency. He said the artifact arrived 'under special security and will be on display for four months. Forty years ago was the last time the cylinder was in Iran, when it went on display for 10 days.' The Cyrus Cylinder was last shown in Iran in October 1971 during the reign of the former shah, for commemorations marking 2,500 years of the Persian monarchy >>>

The British Museum justifies the loaning of the Cyrus the Great Cylinder to the Islamic Republic

anti-Iranian wikipedia editors are rewriting history

The Cyrus Cylinder, Wikipedia and Iran conspiracies

The Cyrus Cylinder story has thrown up a much more interesting scenario -
an apparent tussle of opinions in the shadowy world of  hard drives and
"independent" editors that comprise the Wikipedia industry.

Here's the background:

For many years the Cyrus Cylinder has been referred to as "the world's first human rights charter".  The British Museum describes the relic thus:

"It records that, aided by the god Marduk, Cyrus captured Babylon without a
struggle, restored shrines dedicated to different gods, and repatriated
deported peoples who had been brought to Babylon. It was this decree
that allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild The Temple.
Because of these enlightened acts, which were rare in antiquity, the
Cylinder has acquired a special resonance, and is valued by people all
around the world as a symbol of tolerance and respect for different
peoples and different faiths.

In May 2007, Wikipedia's own description of the cylinder said

"The Cyrus Cylinder has been described as the world’s first charter of human
rights, and it was translated into all official U.N. languages in 1971.
A replica of the cylinder is kept at the United Nations Headquarters in
New York City

But that was before Iran's presidential election last year, and the subsequent ratcheting-up of anti-Iranian activities.

Wikipedia's current entry tells an entirely different story.

Now we see a strenuous attempt to portray the cylinder as nothing more than
the propaganda tool of an aggressive invader, and a complete dismissal
of the suggestion that the cylinder, or Cyrus' actions, represent
concern for human rights or any kind of enlightened intent.

Gone also are the eariler references to Cyrus' immense reputation throughout the ancient world, as documented in the Old Testament and by the people of Babylon themselves.

And if you take a look at the page detailing the history of edits made to
the page, you'll see a large number of re-writes during 2009/2010.

Of course, it's perfectly possible that I'm seeing a conspiracy where
there really is none. The language and actions of people who lived two
and a half thousand years ago are always going to be open to differing
interpretations, and every Wikipedia page is a haphazard jumble of
diverse thoughts from unconnected people, isn't it? But how to explain
the sudden and radical reversal in the consensus of Wikipedia editors?

I can't help but wonder whether, just maybe, this could be the much more
deliberate product of a specific interest group attempting to denigrate
all things Iranian, however tangential their relationship to the present
Islamic Republic.

A very bad idea

by MRX1 on

once again the British stabbed us! This time it’s not political or economical but cultural by bringing this unique irreplaceable item belonging to sprit of true Iran to omatestan occupied by people who hate every essence of true Iran. I just hope nothing happens to this piece and returned as soon as possible back to the safety of British museum. You get chuckle when you read postings by IRR lackeys on this site and their sudden interest in pre qadesieh Iran!

Yes, I know what the curators is (keeper of a cultural heritage) institution). I also like to see it will stay in in its rightful place- Iran. But you didn't respond to my second question: Are you proud of your history and glory of your country prior to Islam - thanks

It's my understanding that the artifact is being put on display by Iranian museum curators, not political clergymen.

Have you ever met a museum curator? If you had, you wouldn't ask such silly questions.

The bigger question is whether it will be given it back. Although I think it will be returned to the British, I doubt very few real Iranians would mind if it stayed in its rightful place- Iran.

Dear Sargord - Do you think Mullahs will take care of this valuable artifact that we Iranians are so proud of or you just like many others don't care about Iranian history and glory prior to Islam - thanks

Is it just me or are these akhoond's bunch of confused koskhols? they deny our pre-Islamic Iranian states and empires yet at the same time they try to pretend like they care about our history, who the fuck do they think they're fooling other than themselves? As the future leader of Iran, I'll make sure  to hang all the islamists and their families by their balls until their last miserable breathes If anything happens to this Iranian-Persian arifact.

I'm serious :D

عموجان

Are British stupid or idiot or they really hate Iranian?

by عموجان on

On the eve of talking to attack Iran (because of the bomb)they are sending this to Iran? …….good plan. Couldn’t they send it sooner or wait after the attack.

Khomeini himself said how he hates every thing before Islam and would like to wipe them off pages of history now IRI have that chance to make his dream come true.(oops a bomb drop on it)

Isn’t Cyrus Cylinder about human rights? and now they are sending it to a government that human right is meaningless to them. Haven’t they heard of Shiva Nazar Ahari and others who are in Evin prison because they spoke out about human rights. Great timing.

Well this is the last of it any body saw Cyrus Cylinder.

Pre Islam history of Iran

by Benyamin on

I think the IRI is a confused institution!

From one side they deny the pre Islam history of Iran to be taught at schools and even try to deny it altogether, and from the other side bang their head to the wall and ask for the Koorosh`s Command(cyrus cylinder) to be returned and show on display???

I know that some think he is what Koran mentions as (zol-gharnein) but it is not a for sure thing.

Anyway, it is a good thing. if anything it will strengthen whoever is on the side of logic.

The Cylinder should be returned.....but not now

by Simorgh5555 on

The British Museum has acted disgracefully. This is an insult to Cyrus and the Iranian people. You do NOT hand over a priceless artefact and historical document to this anti-Iranian regime which is against all the virtues which Cyrus stood for.

This is not the first time that the BM has had cultural exchanges and exhibitions with the occupying terrorist regime of Iran. The year before last there was a major exhibition of Shah Abbas at the museum and during the opening day they welcomed none other than Jack Straw to address a crowd of IR terrorist representatives; as well as the terrorist ambassador himself. Straw, the mullah supporter did not pause to condemn the UK support of the government of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi (Ravensh Shad) making the terrorist loving morons in the audience grin with delight . All of this happened in the BM!

There must be no exhibitions, cultural exchanges, friendly sporting events, university and educational ties with Iran until this regime is owerthrown. YOU OWE IT TO THE PEOPLE OF IRAN.

Please isolate this regime. Boycott it. Condemn it.

Death to the Islamic Republic. No deals with terrorists.
