Ban on Persian Rugs

U.S. sanctions weave big trouble for Persian rugs

Al Jazeera: The US has imposed economic sanctions against Iran for nearly 30 years and the trade barriers have created problems for Iranian businesses. The import and export sector is among the most affected, including in some unusual areas such as the carpet industry. The latest round of sanctions has made trading in Persian rugs illegal, which by extension will hurt the traditional weavers in Iran.

Dear GR,

Hi! I did not know there were so many carpet sanctions before......it seems to me that right now the Persian carpets are easily available......but later when the inventory is low.....the Persian carpets' price may go up! My 1st job out of grad school, I had an Iranian colleague ....he told me that he came to this country with $50 in his pocket.....but he sold an old Persian carpet made by his mom for $3000.....good hand-made Persian carpets can be very expensive!

Thank you for sharing!

My Silk rug story!

by Majid on

Not too long ago my wife (who is American but in love with Persian
stuff) called me to say "this guy stopped at the office, he has a
BEAUTIFUL silk Persian rug for sale, he's asking $850.00 for it, I just
love it! but before I buy it I want you to take a look at it"

When
I got there the seller approached me to show his (100% Persian SILK
rug) which was worth "more than $1200.00 but since your lovely wife
likes it so much and......I need money ASAP" he was setteling for
$850.00!

After seeing his (Silk rug) I asked him to wait a few
seconds until I got back with a piece of mat from my car and said "this
is as SILK, if not more so, than your rug! and I offered him $35.00!

It's a nice rug!

Hi! VPK,

The dealer I bought my rug from is not on e-bay anymore.......there are many other people selling Persian rugs and Persian tiles. When I bought my rug from him.....he was also selling Shia regilious banners, flags, Islamic coins....I have a feeling there is not a big demand for those types of items outside Iran.

Apparently Persian rugs are way more popular than Chinese rugs.....there are 40,000 Persian rugs and 1800 Chinese rugs for sale on ebay!

Here is a chinese Uyghur girl weaving carpet:

Apparently all the carpet weavers are girls in China!

take care!

ebay rug dealers

Many dealers on ebay try to pass imitation rugs as Persian. They do not lie but use words like "Persian Design".  They don't often lie but you got to read the fine print. The best thing to do is to educate yourself about rugs before you buy them.

Barring than on ebay there are several ways to make sure you don't get ripped off:

  • Read the review of the dealer.
  • See if they take returns. If they do then chances are they are honest or at least not total rip offs.

It is nice and pretty. However I prefer hand made rugs. For something like that you are talking about several hundred $ up. A Chinese imitation hand made is about 1/3 - 1/2 the price.

Anyway if you like it good for you. Who was the seller?

Consumers Beware!

by G. Rahmanian on

Many, NOT ALL, rug dealers are as conniving as your average insurance salesperson, auto dealer or realtor. So if you are buying a rug consult someone who knows about rugs. I strongly suggest NOT SHOPPING rugs on E-bay even if you may have some knowledge about them. You have to see what you are buying.

Take care!

It is a pretty rug!

Rugs

Just a few things about Rugs:

You may get real Persian rugs from Ebay. The top quality ones are not Machine made. They are hand woven and widely available more than 1 $! Ebay has a ton on them. When dealers heard about coming sanctions they stocked up. I know many merchants who bought tons of rugs from Iran before the sanctions. One told me that their sales have suffered. Because "Patriotic" Americans are not buying Iranian rugs. They want to support their government.

By the way there is at least one seller on Ebay that ships from Iran. Not sure if they have shipped since the sanctions but the location is listed as Iran.

Personally I am saddened by the sanctions on rugs. However for the sanctions to be effective they have to hit where it hurts. Is this the best way? Maybe not. Again I prefer to have the wealth of Islamists confiscated in the West. Or sanctions on oil. But that ain't gonna happen. So this is what we got.

G. Rahmanian

Dear,

by G. Rahmanian on

Sorry for the typos!!!

G. Rahmanian

Dear Yolanda,

by G. Rahmanian on

Yes, there is stiff competition in the market and in the case of hand-woven rugs from the usual party poopers, India and China. Let's not forget Pakistani and Afghani rugs which are also in demand. Finely woven Turkish silk rugs are expensive and have had less influence on the sale of commercially marketed Persian rugs. Aside from the type of knot which is called, "Turkish knot" and acoording to some experts it is not considered as good as the Persian knot, Turkish producers are making some of the finest rugs in the world. Arab countries are among the largest importers of Persian rugs. Many large rugs are purchase by wealthy Arabs for personal use or for the great mosques they build, some measuring in thousands of square meters. I hesitate, here, to get into the political realm of the source of the problem. As I wrote, I am happy the sanctions are extrnde to rugs as well. In 1996, too, former president Clinton posed his own set of sanctions on Persian rugs. There was another one in the 80s

Hi! Dear GR,

I am not a rug expert.......I only know that the seller shipped the rug to me from Iran.......the rug has mosque and trees.....it is machine-made............I was thrilled to receive something from Iran....from what I read, Iranian rugs/carpets are facing fierce competition from other countries......it is possible that the rug was not made in Iran.........I can't tell.....I am not quite sure......on ebay, it was listed as Persian prayer rug.

Please take care!

G. Rahmanian

My Dear Yolanda:

by G. Rahmanian on

Not to disappoint you, but what you bought is not a Persian rug. It is as you mentioned, فرش ماشيني which are made in Iran. Belgium is a great source of such rugs. In the old glory days of the great Persian rugs they were called, فرش بلزيكي--sorry, I'm using Arabic fonts. Currently, due to their exhorbitant price tags, Persian rugs have been replaced by the machine-made ones at many homes in Iran. Of course, Persian rugs have historically been looked at as a symbol of status and have never been cheap.

Complaining about this sanctions. In fact she can now go back to school, or even play!

So far only "importers/exporters" and the islamist regime's rent a keyboard crowd are angry about this "sanction".
