Aravane Rezai

Wins Madrid tennis title

MADRID (AFP) – Unheralded Aravane Rezai thrust herself into contention as a Roland Garros threat on Sunday with a stunning 6-2, 7-5 victory over Venus Williams to win the Madrid Masters after a week-long, giant-killing run. "The French Open is another tournament and I will try my best at the first match," said the winner. "Every match is difficult. I have to take it one match at a time and we'll see." The upset in just under one and three-quarter hours marked the biggest success in the career of the Frenchwoman, whose previous two WTA titles were in Strasbourg and Bali. Sunday's victory was Rezai's third major triumph this week after knocking out former number one players Justine Henin in the first round and Jelena Jankovic in the quarters. "It's the best week of my career and I'm very happy," said Rezai. "I played very well, I'm very proud of myself because it was a very tough tournament and a lot of players were here >>>

The debate here is not about her as an athlete. Or about her joy or not. The issue is that people are objecting to any support for IRI. That is a very ligitimate objection for any Iranian. People have a right to assert their opposition to AN; and IRI. Far from being shameful it is very understandable for people to be opposing IRI.

Why is it shameful to oppose the IRI please tell me it!

Parsi, aka, Miss Palestine

writes, "Rezai is an outstanding talent, and an independent voice. she is truly admirable."

"An independent voice." A 23-year-old tennis player, whose probably compeletly brainwashed by her hezi parents. This Parsi character tries so hard to sound... (trying not to get flagged)... foolish. Or maye it just comes easy to her, that's probably more like it. Lucky for us, her despicable ilk is a dying breed.

One can only hope!

writes, "I have one suggestion to all who so passionately wrote against this tennis player... will today be another day in IC writing about a tennis player rather than attacking leaders of IRI?"

Madame, please do read between the lines. We were attacking the IRI, mainly its president through the person of Ms. Rezai. Did you not get that or were you just trying to slip in a jab at those who rejected your initial notions of this debate being based on Ms. Rezai's "sex," which was patently ridiculous.

This whole debate has been about the decaying power of the IRI, and its leadership, and those who support it -- my God, Madame, how obtuse can one get and still call themselves perceptive?

Iran is a prisoner of IRI

I was also taken back from the comment she made in that video about AN. But come on, if she really supported a piece of monkey crap like Ahmadinejad she would wear a black chador, stay home, and you would never even hear her name again, let alone wear a tennis outfit and win championships.

rezai beat justin henin in the first round. she went on to also beat, Andrea Petkovic and Jelena Jankovic.

afterwards, henin said she was sick; petkovic said rezai's style and power is similar to serena williams'; and jankovic said:

"It was like playing in the winter. The balls
were heavy, there was no tennis, I had no rhythm and I didn't move
well,"

Excerpt from a 2006 New York Times article:

//www.nytimes.com/2006/06/01/sports/tennis/01...

***************************

Rezai respects her faith by not exchanging the traditional Gallic kisses on the cheek with men during greetings (or prize-giving ceremonies), but she intends to compete for France, not Iran, in international competition.

...................

The approximately $40,000 in prize money won here so far will help finance Aravane's travels and training for months. But for Arsalan (Rezai, the dad), this is only the beginning.

"Of course I'm happy, but that's not the result I'm looking for," he said. "The result I'm looking for is No. 1 in the world. I've always wanted her to be No. 1. She was supposed to be No. 1 at 19. She's 19 now. We lost lots of time because of financial problems."

Never heard of her ...

by sag koochooloo on

Sorry to put a damper on things but I think she's probably a one hit wonder. Let her enjoy her hour of fame . Lets see if she is consistent and will win more big tournaments, because that is the sign of a true champion. The Williams sisters do have bad days but they keep bouncing back. Consistency makes a true champ.

Anonymouse

Her inspiration is "Disco"! More reason to like her!

by Anonymouse on

Q. So the the inspiration sort of disco?
ARAVANE REZAI: Yeah, disco. Yeah. It was shiny with the sun. I like to be different, you know, to wear different clothes. It's always fun when, you know, it's a little bit fashion on court.
Many players wear the same clothes and always the same color. I don't want this. I want to be different. That's why.

Macho! Macho Man! I want to be Macho Man! (Like Ahmadi ;-)  Macho Ahmadi!

Here is the excerpt from an January interview,

//www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=60...

****************************

Q. Just on another subject, I understand you won some gold medals at the Muslim Woman's games in Iran a couple years ago.

ARAVANE REZAI: Yes.

Q. How does that work?
ARAVANE REZAI: Yeah, that a big event for Muslim woman, and it's only womans watching the game. It's only woman event, so I just play for Iran and I won.

Q. Did that seem very unusual for you, just playing in front of women?
ARAVANE REZAI: Yeah, but, you know, it's like that, so I respect and I play.

Q. Is that a regular event? Would you play it again, or was it just one time?
ARAVANE REZAI: It was just one event, and it's every four years. It's like Olympic Games but for Muslim woman and each sport, so I play. I'm not playing anymore because I have some bigger tournament. (Laughter.)

Hi! Mouse,

Press TV has not reported her big win....I "guess" they are not happy with her un-islamic attire. Lets see if she is still with IRI's National tennis team. There are 3 other old stories about her in Press TV's website, apparently Press TV liked her before and wanted her to succeed!

i understand how you feel. i did not label her a supporter of ahmadi.  i merely repeated what she stated.  i don't understand your second paragraph; however, i don't think it matters since i can't even seem to see eye to eye with you on whether a 22-year old professional female athlete is considered a woman or a little girl.

i do agree with your first sentence though. now, go ahead and have the last word.  nice chatting with you. :)

by KouroshS on

I agree to disagree with you! I am sorry that you refuse to believe what was right there before your eyes and decide to instead call it a political move. Really, I am. I don't think this is about the iranians that you know aziz jan.

Many Iranians? Really? SO whyis it that That many iranians have not had the chance yet to be swayed by her fame and "public figure" status and choose instead  to pour onto the streets and raise their voices? It is wonder, isn't it? I was not even referring to any NON Iranians knowing about  her dadash. I was also talking about Iranians inside iran.

The crime is accusing her of being  blatant and unabahsed and absolute supporter of AN. That to me is the ultimate Overstatement.

You already started the bashing process by labelling her as a supporter while you could have taken your own advice and put some dandoon rooye jegar!

Mardom Mazloom

Jeez I forgot !! will do it right now

by Mardom Mazloom on

I said that I was a fan and that her victory did shine the flame of pride in every Iranian's heart. I asked her to clarify her position toward her support to AN just before the elections. And added that AN is in the head of a Fascist regime which needs every support even for a short time, just to be recognized. I asked her to respect the dead of our compatriots who gave their lives for our freedom, in order to be in every Iranian heart forever!

Anonymouse

Yolanda interesting link! Aravane jaan u've dug a hole 4 urself!

by Anonymouse on

She is in a jam! If she supports women's right in Iran the Islamic Republic and Ahmadi won't like her and if she supports them most Iranians won't like her.  Especially if she wins more important titles and become more famous.

She has an opportunity that few other Iranians have and she is young so it is a little blind leading blind!  Then again most Iranians are young and from her generation. So she can fit in and be heard easily.  I hope she chooses wisely and use her position to promote equality, justice and democracy.

I'd recommend she contacts Shirin Ebadi and get some advice from her.

Everything is sacred.

Anonymouse

MM can u translate in English? Did u post a link to this thread?

by Anonymouse on

I think we should leave comments in French.  I won't leave a comment in English.  I'd just ask if she still supports Ahmadi?

Everything is sacred.

I did it, under the name Reza:

i disagree that an accomplished 22-year old woman is a "gleeful little girl."  and the iranians i know, don't typically go to the majlis and take gifts for ahmadi and try to meet him.  rezai is a worldly woman who crisscrosses the globe for her tournaments and should know better what she's doing.

i also don't agree with your sentiment that she's not known outside of the tennis world.  many iranians have known her for years, and many will now notice her for the first time.  the iranian population is the most important audience for political debate on iranian issues.  therefore, it is moot whether billy bob in jackson, mississippi (or chauncy upper-crust from hampton, new york) will ever know her.  by the way i think that you overstated that people have accused her of committing any crime.  did i miss something in this endless thread?

i do agree that we shouldn't endlessly bash her without giving her chance to respond to criticism in light of the events of the past year (and 31 years!).
