'Ethnic Rhinoplasty' Popular Gift for Persian New Year

StyleList.com: Dornaz Maraghehchi - a direct descendant of the Qajar Persian royal dynasty and a Los Angeles high school senior - will this week undergo an 'ethnic rhinoplasty' at the hands of Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Ashkan Ghavami, M.D., who specializes in the procedure for people of Middle Eastern descent.

"Facial beauty is very important for us. The nose is the center of the face and many of the women are attractive but often inherit their father's large nose that is disproportionate with the rest of their face," says Dr. Ghavami. "As women come of age and are approaching marriage and more independent womanhood, facial beauty becomes more significant. Therefore, for birthdays, the Persian New Year and pre-wedding, gifts such as rhinoplasty are given at this time," adds Dr. Ghavami.

Dr. Ghavami has written textbook chapters and professional essays on the difference between 'ethnic' rhinoplasties and the 'regular' nose job, and is considered an expert in the field >>>

Always Amazed At My Fellow Countrymen

by aghavami on

I have to say I hesitated to post in the first place, however I feel as an Iranian-American that I must state a few FACTS and SOME OPINIONS because I take great offense to the comments below as an attack on me and my character for no justified reason.

I came to the U.S. at the age of 3 for a better life. I studies and worked hard and struggled to attend medical school, then acquire one of the most competitive specilaty training, Plastic Surgery. Since then I have dedicated my life and soul to the science and art of plastic and reconstructive surgery.  I have always been supportive of my fellow Iranians and stood up for them in times of prejudice and biases I faced throughout my training.

None of you know me or my character and should not take it personally when a woman chooses to do anything to her face, body, hair, eyes or whatever....and seeks my professional services.  I DID NOT MAKE THE WORLD THE WAY IT IS.  However, we all know that Iranians are into beauty, whether it is gardens, architecture or the human body. We are known for our artistry and poetry and culture.  This young woman chose like many many before her to enhance her beauty through a natural nose shaping (rhinoplasty).  I specialize in creating natural noses that dont look fake so she and her mother felt comfortable with me. THAT IS ALL.

Her Royal linkage is simply an interesting fact that the writers at AOL  were fascinated with, but, some of you are correct, there is no Royal Nose and it is irrelevant for purposes of her anatomy and surgery.  Just an intertesting side note similar to when we say a patient is a piano player, or painter and wants surgery.

I have written and lectured on special differences in analysis of ethnic noses like African American, Hispanic and Middle Eastern noses because plastic surgeons have erased ethnicity in the past and we are more advanced now.  To question the purpose and motivation for my writings in Plastic Surgery is ABSURD unless you have a full understand of anatomy, medical and surgical science, and plastic surgery.  If you come to my office you can view the chapters and you will see images of Cyrus the great as well as recognition of our history. and YES, OUR RECENT HISTORY IS THAT MANY PERSIAN WOMEN GET NOSE JOBS. I DID NOT CAUSE THAT AND IT IS THE WAY IT IS.

People, just relax a bit and try to love on another as brothers and sisters. Iranians are so un-united sometimes and perhaps that is the reason for all our problems.  It is very disappointing and frustrating. We often have the whole world against us yet the first people to comment on my recognition on Iranian.com were nothing but negative in their comments.  Very sad indeed.

I DO NOT COERCE OR FORCE ANYONE into plastic surgery. They seek me out for what I do. It is simply my profession and I enjoy what I do and I do my best to do it well and professionally.

I carry myself in an honest and ethical manner for my patients. None of you know this unless you are my patient. As for this story. I did not comment on her nose, merely suppied the writers at AOL with some answers to their questions. It has now been reposted under my photo for Iranian.com.

To attack me and my looks based on a story in AOL that was meant to be interesting and fun, is ridiculous! Unfortunately , it says a lot about how far we as Iranians still need to come to unite and support one another in times of success as well as in times of distress.

I hope all of you face your days with more peace and content.  There are many many more things that we need to focus on attacking or commenting negative on.   Do not judge me or my patient as superficial unless you know each of use well.

Please review my books, google me, and do some research and give more thought before you post on the internet. Think and act wisely and fairly. Your lives will become better as a result.

Thank you. God bless all of you.

I don't understand the difference between ethnic and regular rhinoplasties and to write academic articles on the subject is ridiculous.

I would agree that Maraghehchi could have been blessed with a better nose, but why mess with mother nature.  On the other hand, she could use a name change and shorten her last name.

Also, did Qajars have big noses?  I would question her direct descent from the Qajars because she doesn't seem to have a unibrow.

Money making garbage.

this doctor is advertising his business to make more money. He is absolutely ridiculous in his opinion that as women want to become "independent"! they go after beauty plastic surgery!  Indpendent women do NOT consider facial beauty as a necessary qualification for becoming independent. Those with vanity and low self esteem think such.

One thing is true about Iranian women I have seen (many), they have the most beautiful eyes in the world (so do the men) which now with the obligatory hijab, the emphasis is even more on the eyes.
