I have never heard or seen anything like this during Moharram mourning parades. Watch to see the interesting and accidental nuances of this amateur film. Watch the scene happening behind the musicians and the eerie mix of music and visuals:

Roozbeh
by Simorgh5555 on Thu Dec 23, 2010 02:27 PM PSTIn all seriousness, I think the Ashura celebrations and self-mutilation is a response to feelings of sexual frustration and other freedoms most cvilised people take for granted. They can't sing, can't dance, can't drink - so once a year they let their hair down by indulging in this primitve madness.
simorgh: on homosexuality and shia self mutilation ceremony....
by Roozbeh_Gilani on Thu Dec 23, 2010 02:20 PM PSTSigmund Freud would have a field day clicking on the link you posted! Here we have a bunch of guys no doubt thinking about the 72 whories (sex to be determined!) awaiting them in behesht after they'd achieved martyrdom through beating the crap out of themselves.
"Personal business must yield to collective interest."
More Ashura madeness

S5555, Technique # 1 "Demonizing" straight from the handbook
by Mola Nasredeen on Thu Dec 23, 2010 02:02 PM PSTfor junior Zionist activists.
Demonizing Shia Muslims, have you no Shame?
Abused are 1200 Palestinians children who are under the age of 18, arrested and tortured by the Israel racist police and army. Abused are 235 of them who are under the age of 14 who are picked up on the streets of their occupied villages, towns and cities by the last standing racist regime on earth called Israel.
Abused are more than 15000 Palestinians who are being tortured in Israeli prisons. Talking about political prisoners and human rights.
Abused are 1.5 million Gazans who are starved and bombed by your Zionist regime. Abused are the cancer patients who have to wait for hours in check points before reaching their doctors and hospitals.
And as usual you an Zionist supporter of Israeli regime come here to an Iranian website and put down Iranians' religious beliefs. Have you no shame? Do you think you Jews are better than Shia Muslims? The audacity, really?

Ashoora celebrations.
by Simorgh5555 on Thu Dec 23, 2010 01:24 PM PSTBunch of misguided individuals indulging in a superstitious death cult. The worse thing is that they take along their children in these events and encourage them to participate in acts of self-conflagration. This is happening in the USA and this child abuse must be stopped:
//atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/20...
This child abuse in Ahura takes place in Iran and Lebanon every year and the UN must pass a resolution condemning it:
//www.jesus-is-savior.com/False%20Religions/I...
Of course, not even the Mullahs care or believe in this superstitious pantomine as evident in this video:
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O8QW77QV1o
Please ask your MP, Congressman or member of Parliament to ban all Ashura Celebrations and send a clear message that exports of terror are not welcome. Your children need to be protected from these malignant Shia Islamic influences.

"The Mourning of Muharram is an important period of mourning in Islam,, taking place in Muharram which is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is also called the Remembrance of Muharram. Many of the events associated with the remembrance take place in congregation halls known as Hussienih.
The event marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala when Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Mohammad, and a Shia Imam was killed by the forces of the second Yazid. The event is marked by arranging 'majalis' (gatherings) to review Islamic teachings and to commemorate Imam Hussain's sacrifice. The mourning reaches its climax on the tenth day, known as Ashura" Wikipedia
Very interesting and thought provoking video. You did it again, good post Ghormeh Sabzi
Mordeh Parasti va Biganeh parasti
by statira on Thu Dec 23, 2010 09:10 AM PSTAraba rast migand, ke ma Irania mordeh parasteem. Who was Hossein? Wasnt he and his father were the same people who attacked Iran and killed so many of our countrymen?
Iranians need to have a ceremony like this for our fallen heroes like Sasanian general Rostam Farokhzad who was killed and decapitated by the Arabs.

by hamsade ghadimi on Thu Dec 23, 2010 08:22 AM PSTvery nice music. i agree with datis in that many musicians use any opportunity to play thier instrument and (hopefully) get compensated. especially in iran where there aren't many venues for them. i'm still surprised that they allow western instruments to be played in such ceremony.
Social Darwinism

The old takeyehs fail to attract young people.
Inject modern musical instrument into it, and ta'zeeyeh - to our delight ! - lives on.
Ashora Blues,
by kazem0574 on Thu Dec 23, 2010 06:32 AM PSTEh 1, 2, 3 hit it.
Notice the "grohe orchestr" are "mostly" good looking people. Guess forced to come play here from their usual "Arosy Parties".
Later you see Shemr and Yazid talking on horse back, fed up they have to let the blues sacks man to finish before they can get on with it.
Iran is one mish mash of things, just love the place.
Playing instruments in Hossein Carnival!
by Datis on Thu Dec 23, 2010 06:03 AM PSTI remember even from the early years after the revolution, the musicians who could no longer play their instruments in public used this opportunity to blow their trumpets!
We had this Mr Bagheri in our neighbourhood who played the clarinet during Muharram.
For a musician the occasion is not very important; they only love to play their music.
Also, as G.Rahmanian mentioned, Passion Play and playing music is not limited to Ashura and the moslems. I have seen very funny Taziehs (islamic version of Passion Play) that really cracked the mourners up instead of making them cry! It's all stupid, but unfortunately one of the few excuses for our people to get together and have fun!
I used to love
by rtayebi1 on Thu Dec 23, 2010 05:53 AM PSTMohramm. I couldn't wait to go to Takeyah at nights, no matter how cold or sick I would get. My bodies, and I would drink some great tea, and fight over PERCHAm, KOOTAL, or bigger ZANGEER. It was just like Brazilian carnival for us. Man this videos reminded me of some great simple memories. On other hand I just simply hated Ramadan
Passion Play!
by G. Rahmanian on Thu Dec 23, 2010 05:42 AM PSTWhat you see in the background is a "passion play" which used to be more popular than it is now. Christians also perform passion plays depicting suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Although saxophone is new, instruments such as cymbals, tabla and bugles have already been used.
Looks more civilized

by SamSamIIII on Thu Dec 23, 2010 05:06 AM PSTIn pre teens I spent a few summers in Nahavand , touirserkaan and in & around Hamadan(Ostaan hamedan). These folks, specialy Nahavandis & Touissies are a witty bunch & Sarcastic "Muslims" ;). Their dismissive witty nature is not coincidental since Nahavand was the place of the last great resistance of Sassanid Iran against marauding Arab armies. Their spirit shows off in the many folkloric stories my grandmaa from nahavand used to tell me be it the story of Heroine Delaram & women of ghaleh defending their cities or mocking stories about omar and shaikhs.
Good catch & cheers!!!
