Lula Pleads for Sakineh's Life

Brazil offers asylum to Iranian woman facing stoning

(Reuters) – Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to allow a woman sentenced in Iran to death by stoning to accept an offer of asylum in Brazil, local media reported. The sentence imposed on Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani for an extra-marital relationship, which she denies, has caused an international outcry. It has been suspended pending a review by Iran's judiciary but could still be carried out. "I call on the supreme leader of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to permit Brazil to grant asylum to this woman," state radio reported him as saying on Saturday. Human rights group Amnesty International said Mohammadi Ashtiani was convicted in 2006 of having an "illicit relationship" with two men and received 99 lashes as her sentence. Despite this, the rights group said she was subsequently convicted of "adultery while being married," which it said she denied, and for which she was sentenced to death by stoning >>>

Great move by Brazil

This is what you call smart diplomacy. I love Brazil and their culture. One of the best countries I've ever seen.

Obrigado President Lula.

What ever happens, this offer sets a precedent

by javaneh29 on

Ive been following this story since it first erupted onto our screens. It's the first time such a gesture has been made from any country,  friend or foe to interevene on what IRI consider to be their internal affairs. And not suprisingly, we dont trust it, we dont know how to feel about it and there are consequently a whole myriad of thoughts and views around it.

Initially I was concerned about what this would mean for Sakine and her children should the offer be accepted and felt torn between what might might well be a face saving hand out from Lulu to Ahamdinejad and the prospect of saving Sakine from certain death. Okay granted it is only one life amongst many but each is precious.

However as they day went on I sure of one thing and that is that this offer by Lulu places the human rights atrocities in Iran under a whole new spot light as far as international comdemnation and intervention goes.

Ahmadinejad can't afford to ignore this offer, now news in the international public domain... he has few allies in this world as it is and so even if he refuses the gesture, at the very least it might save Sakine from the gallows. It is going to be interesting to see how he manages this.

But I am wondering will this set a precedent for other countries to follow ? I would have been much more at ease had this offer been made by Sweden for example.

Saúde Brasil!

by Faramarz on

A smart move by el Presidente Lula!

No matter how Mahmoud and the gang reply to this asylum request, there will be problems for the IR.

If they reject the request, then the Brazilian people, and for that matter, most South Americans will see the brutality of this regime against the defenseless people of Iran.

And if they grant it, there will be internal problems among those who want to take Iran back 14 centuries, versus those who only want to take Iran back 13 centuries!

Either way, the message will be loud and clear. You cannot reason with these people and the only language that they understand comes from the business end of a B-2 bomber!

What's wrong with you brorthers and sisters...!?

by pastor bill rennick on

You should be appalled by this gesture from Lula! Lula should condemn this barbaric act of stoning and if he is very concerned (Kaseh Daghtar Az Ash) about the health, safety, and security of Iranians he should offer this asylum to the very source of insecurity which is Ahmadinejad et al.

Both Brazil and Argentina took many Nazi criminals  after WWII. So, they know how to accommodate and deal with Ahamdinejad, Khamenei, Rafsanjani, Khatami, Mousavi, and the gang.

Bavafa

Thank you Lula, but we all need to work to abolish

but this is the the case for ONE individual.  We all need to work to abolish this barbaric act not only in Iran but every where.

So I agree with Shifteh ansari, Mr lulu should give assylum to khalifa, his vazir and few thousand bassiji supporters who are not facing a bright future in Iran.

Letter from her lawyer. Mohammad Mostafaei

by Rosie. on

who was responsible for bringing the case to international attention, and is now in hiding following the detention of his wife and brother-in-law. on no grounds.

Mostafaei is one of the leading human rights lawyers left practicing in Iran. His focus is on stoning and execution of minors.

The letter is addressed to Jafari Dolat Abadi, Chief Prosecuter of Tehran and has been disseminated widely throughout the world.

Another good thing you can do is to tell AN and KHAR to respect the rights of the people of Iran. Maybe they will do it if you throw in two free tickets to the 2014 World Cup :-)

If by Mahmoud’s “clan” you mean all Islamist Rapists including the “reformist” who have a hand in the crimes against Iranians from day one, we are in full agreement.

And no Iranians are not fine, not fine at all till all Islamist Rapists are out of power, including the “reformist” version.

That;s it , SHE WILL DEF. NOT GET EXECUTED

by i_support_khamenie on

Barely a month after the new freindship between Iran and Brazil, and already:

Brazil has exerted pressure on IRI and humiliated IRI worldwide with this offer.

It can afford to pressure IRI, because Brazil knows IRI cah hardly afford to lose it, IRAN has NO FRIENDS.

NOW, let IRI officials regret why they treated US so badly. US is the only ally you will ever need. FOR REFEENCE: ASK THE SAUDIS. They know Americans are the best allies

i_support_khamenie

Please release her BUT NOT TO BRAZIL

by i_support_khamenie on

I can tell you of a large number of Palestinians and Iraqi refugees who accepted to be relocated to Brazil

They say that the government DOES NOT HELP them one bit. They have to sleep in tents in the park in a city where CRIME is overwhelming.

THe Brazilian government could not help them with any jobs. They found jobs for the women AS BARTENDERS OR DANCERS with total disregard or LACK of understanding that these women who WEAR VEIL or HIJAB would not for the life of them do it.

PLEASE DO NOT RELEASE THIS WOMAN TO BRAZIL. SHE WILL BE LEFT FOR THE BLACKS THERE TO PIMP HER. I AM NOT KIDDING ONE BIT>

BETTER TO THROW HER TO SHARKS THAN TO BRAZIL.

ANYWAY, IF IRI DOES SEND HER TO BRAZIL, THAT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE DISRESPECT.

Iranians are just fine where they are.  Couldn't Lula Jaan just offer to take Mahmoud and his clan and give them refuge in Brazil, leaving Iran to Iranians to figure out what they want to do with their country?

Fred

Extend the invitation

by Fred on

Thank you Mr. President. Now if you could extend your offer to other potential victims who at any moment can be put in the same situation.

Their number is somewhere between thirty to forty million. On the bright side, Iranian women would definitely add to the natural beauty of Brazil.

BTW, these Islamist Rapist savages are the same murderers that you think can be trusted with nuke.

Jahanshah Javid

Thank you Lula!

This is an extraordinary intervention by a head of state. Let's see if the IRI can show a drop of mercy.
