by Agha_Irani on Sun Aug 01, 2010 12:11 PM PDTRead my comment carefully: I talk about economic indicators such as GDP per capita, oil production etc, these ARE the FACTS - check them out for yourself. Recessions happen, they last for a couple of years and then the economy, if manged wisely, recovers. Iran has been in permanent decline for 31 years - that is not a recession, that is incompetence combined with corruption and theft by Khamenei and the rest of the mullahs.
Also note: stating that the Islamist jihadi regime in Tehran is backward, incompetent and corrupt is NOT prejudice. IT IS FACT.
Lets look at some examples so we establish FACTS:
Backward: stoning, whipping, public hangings, harassment of women and minorities etc
Incompetent: we have already discussed their poor management of the economy (as a starting point).
Corrupt: Stolen elections, Businesses and wealth being allocated to the 'khodemoonis' like Khamenei's family, Ahmadinejad's cronies and the IRGC etc.
Any other facts you would like to discuss???????
Sad, Incredible State of Denial!
by Ahura on Sun Aug 01, 2010 11:41 AM PDTThere is not even a little acknowledgement of oppressive dictatorship and widespread corruption that culminated in 1979 people’s uprising against the Pahlavi regime, in her account. It is the same old narrative of their fault (betrayals and lies), and not ours (despotism and corruption) that caused it.
She states that the king was tormented by the execution of many patriotic Iranians, which was done by hanging psychopath judge Khalkhali! Well, these brave men stayed true to their oath of loyalty to the king but he had fled and left them with no instruction. Prime minister Amir Abbass Hoveyda was also sacrificed when left imprisoned on the charges of corruption while the courtiers and the peas around the peacock throne escaped with their loots!
I understand the human loyalty to husband and father, specially a deceased one, but to have this much convenient amnesia or disregard of the facts is incredible and sad.

by Marjaneh on Sun Aug 01, 2010 10:56 AM PDTactually, it's one of those things that eating meat becomes a symbol of success.
A bit like , noono panir-o angoor turning into noono panir-o KoooookA KoooolA!
Very sad.
Only thing is, that I haven't heard anyone boast in the US about being able to eat meat everyday. Let alone a former monarch mentioning the price of meat.
Good interview though?

Marjaneh,
by Mola Nasredeen on Sun Aug 01, 2010 10:50 AM PDTWhy the price of meat as a yardstick you ask? Because they like to eat their abghosht just like Americans who like to eat their steaks and the French who like to eat frogs.
Agha Irani: It's about stating the facts without any prejudice and not about which regime is more awful. If you do a research about the very last few years of Shah's rule you'll see Iran was going through a great recession hence khomeini's promise of sending a check to every family from oil revenues.
So, tis tAim, I vonz 2 know
by Marjaneh on Sun Aug 01, 2010 10:38 AM PDTWhy do so many Iranians keep mentioning the price of meat as a yardstick?

by Agha_Irani on Sun Aug 01, 2010 10:07 AM PDTIt is true that the Shah was a dictator - but he wasn't ruthless enough - he should have had Khomeini executed back in 1963 and then we wouldn't have had this awful retarded islamic regime of the past 30 years.
Regarding the economy your comment is laughable - every indicator shows that Iran was economically more successful in the 1970s (before the mullahs and their islamist hangers on started to loot the country's wealth) than it is even today more than 30 years later. The real economic mismanagement has been under the stewardship of Khomieni, Khamenei and their cronies. But then if you rely on a 1400 year old ideology to run a country in the 21st Century it is sure going to be backward. While the rest of the world has entered modernity, Iran has entered the Dark Ages.

by Artificial Intelligence on Sun Aug 01, 2010 10:06 AM PDTThey stole our democratic rights and we now have democratic rights with Akhoonds in charge. We put akhoonds in charge to give us democratic rights. "Democratic Rights" for a nation is something that is earned and we did not deserve it or earn it as evidenced by our stupidity of replacing one type of dictator (the shah) with another wrose type of dictator (the turban).
Mind you, the Shah had very good reasons at the time with respect to taking our "democratic rights" away. Everyone forgets about the "democratic rights" we would have received had shmucks like the Tudeh would have taken power with the Sovit Union next door. History has proven the Shah right for taking democratic rights away. Look what we did with "democratic rights" once we got rid of the monarchy. We shot our self in the foot by selecting a bigot (and a bigoted system) as our form of leadership.
I am no supporter of Monarchy but I stand by my earlier comment. Farah is all class, regardless of your rant about her clan "kept the rest in the lowest strata" crap. My father was in the lowest of the lowest strata, growing up in the worst conditions and because of the Pahalavi's he became educated and an Engineer. Corruption is every where, in every type of system, so stop using these bs excusses. At least 80% of the Iranians I know today say "goh khordim ba in karee ke kardeem".

Those were good old days especially for the Pahlavis...
by Mola Nasredeen on Sun Aug 01, 2010 09:06 AM PDTWhat should it be called? Selective memory? As one gets older she tends to remember the good times, sweet memories and places that entertains and soothes one's soul. Ms Diba is no different.
Ms Diba has forgotten the great recession that was responsible for the downfall of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's regime among other things. When banks were not lending money anymore and the housing bubble had burst, pretty much like what's happenign today in the United States and other places.
Ms Diba also mentions many excuses for her husband's ruthless dictatorial regime. There was no party but his party, there was no voice but his voice, there was no decision made without his input and the list goes on.
At the end of the interview she pushes her son to be the next ruler by saying Shah wanted his son to rule Iran democratically after all. But as the saying goes every story has a beginnig, a middle and an end. Pahlavi's times are over and it'll exist only in the memories of the ones who were involved with it or Pahlavi's remnants outside of Iran.

by Demo on Sun Aug 01, 2010 06:38 AM PDT"An Alien Encounter." An old & boring episode.
Was it just a sample of a longer interview?
by ghalam-doon on Sun Aug 01, 2010 06:48 AM PDTMy guess is that this is part of a longer interview since the last question was getting to the heart of the matter. Farah is more candid about those days and claims the Shah was "hoping" to open the political atmosphere in Iran, and he started doing that "when it was too late." In other words Farah admits the fact that the political repression caused the revolution.
That's what happens when one person decides the fate of a nation. Political atmosphere of a country is not like a valve that one can open and close on a whim. It is a gradual and evolutionary process. One cannot close down the political dialogue, and then try to open up the political atmosphere just a little in order to prevent an explosion. It was too late and the explosion happened.
Are the Pahlavis irrelevant? I don't think so. Since they were the last dynasty in Iran and they have many followers, we cannot just ignore them. They are still alive in the "hearts and minds" of many. Farah has a good point there when she says she would have "hoped" the country was in a better shape today after more than thirty years. Since if we were in a better shape, then we could forget about the Pahlavis and embrace the aquired freedom etc. After all that's what the revolution supposedly was all about. Unfortunately in many ways we are in a worse shape and many (not just monarchists) dream of the days when they (we) had at least cultural and social freedom.
Always classy
