Hamid Dabashi

First episode of "The Week in Green"

Each episode of "The Week in Green with Hamid Dabashi" will consist of three recurring segments: an informative segment reviewing the latest news and developments; an analytical segment offering topical insights into various aspects of the movement; and a prescriptive segment that will help sustain the momentum of the civil rights movement in Iran. First Episode (below): Interview with Iranian artist, Shirin Neshat, whose feature film, "Women without Men," won the best director award at the Venice Film Festival. This episode analyzes the role of art and artist in the Iranian civil rights movement. Episode 2 (Hadi Ghaemi), Episode 3, (Larry Cox).

INTRODUCTION: For over a hundred years, the people of Iran have struggled to implement a democratic system of governance, only to be repeatedly foiled by international intervention, historical circumstance, and even their own national leaders. Today, Iran is once again at a crossroads, with profound implications for the future of democracy in the nation and perhaps even the region. When the dust of the post-electoral crisis of June 2009 settles, Iran could become a vibrant, representative democracy with rights and liberties secured for all its citizens, or, conversely, a repressive dictatorship in which only the powerful can truly prosper. We have created The Week in Green with Hamid Dabashi: A Window into the Iranian Civil Rights Movement to help ward off this second possibility while striving for the first.

The Week in Green with Hamid Dabashi is a weekly broadcast supporting the civil rights movement in Iran. We seek to provide our viewers with the latest relevant news from inside and outside of Iran, sophisticated analysis of various aspects of the movement, and endorse and support those seeking greater openness in Iranian civil society and democratic institutions. In doing so, we hope to keep the information channels open, sustain international focus on the struggles of the Iranian people, encourage and unite those struggling for meaningful change, and ultimately realize the dream of a truly democratic Iran.

THE HOST: We are honored to have the illustrious Hamid Dabashi as the host of The Week in Green with Hamid Dabashi. Born in Ahvaz, Iran, Hamid Dabashi is one of the worlds leading authorities on Iranian society and culture. The author of 18 books and hundreds of scholarly articles, Professor Dabashi holds the prestigious Hagop Kevorkian Chair of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York City. A committed teacher for nearly three decades, Dabashi is also an internationally renowned public speaker, a respected cultural critic, a current affairs essayist, and a staunch anti-war activist.

THE FORMAT: Each episode of The Week in Green with Hamid Dabashi will consist of three recurring segments: an informative segment reviewing the latest news and developments; an analytical segment offering topical insights into various aspects of the movement; and a prescriptive segment that will help sustain the momentum of the civil rights movement in Iran. These three segments will be interspersed with news footage, expert interviews and panel discussions, and occasional special features. The show will be broadcast and subtitled in both English and Persian.

The only pleasant thing in this video is her makeup. I loved it! I suppose it's a matter of taste. I shall see her movie. With that taste, it should be a good movie too... at least for me!

American Dream

The final foot print of the Green Movement

by American Dream on

The Green Movement gave the Islamic Republic of Iran, the theocracy another life line.

Green or sabz as they call it in Persian will forever be equated with Mir Hussein Moosavi, the Syed's movement.

The movement is like an onion.  It has layers and layers.  The more you peel it, the more it smells.

okh joon, gandesh dar oomad.

And everything is sacred.

Iran decided to make importance of individuals irrelevant in political syste. They have fcused on upholding the ideals rather than names and positions such as Imam, velayat faghih, raiis jomhoor.

Freedom and social justice is prevailing in pople's slogans. There is no more room for individuals calling the shots for country. Let's hope that this will be a continuous process even after major changes in the political arena.

MOOSIRvaPIAZ I don't think I was ever introduced to you ? ...

by Darius Kadivar on

So ... No I Truly don't think the Opinion of an ANONYMOUS Contributor like you truly matters ...

To begin with Take Responsability for your Opinions  if you are not ashamed of who you are and what you say or claim when accusing others who do it in the light of the day ...

Maybe with Your Real Name and Photo I can distinguish you from all the dozens of regular ANONYMOUS contributors on this website who enjoy the Freedom of expression that others like me amongst many other Feature Writers on Iranian.com

//iranian.com/Writers/af.html

had to earn with the Sweat of our intellect and contributions ...

Before You guys got to simply Pop Up and enjoy demolishing others under the BOLD STANCE OF ANONYMOUS and often insulting Comments without ever painstakingly earning your Freedom of Expression ...

Apart from That Well You are Entitled to Your Own Opinion and I am entitled to Mine ...

I don't really care about Dabashi's "mental masturbations" but at least he does it in the open and is Big enough to defend himself when he doesn't try to indulge in character assassinations against such equally respected scholars like Abbas Milani or talented writers like Azar Nafisi ....

Actually Dabashi is a Respected Scholar when it comes to Post Revolution Iranian Cinema and has published numerous books on the Subject. He is less prolific when it comes to Hollywood films despite having been a historical advisor on an excellent Ridley Scott Movie on the Crusades which I truly enjoyed:

Ridley's Crusade By Darius KADIVAR

We don't have the same insights on Cinema and Politics. Apart from that well he doesn't seem to be entirely un interesting for a last Minute Resistant ...

Best,

havent we been over this once before? Do you see how you keep on with the character assassinations? I've said many times I never supported the revolution.

I call BS wherever i see them. Be it from Islamist republic supporters or shahis.

MOOSIRvaPIAZ ... If You say so ...

You Are Entitled to Your Opinion, I am Entitled to mine ...

In Terms of Character Assassination YOU and YOUR Revolutionary Friends Have Been Championing it for 30 years against the Pahlavis

Teachings of a Monarch

and Anti Revolutionaries to say the least and despite the Massacres of 1988 and the numerous executions WITHOUT EVER Making YOUR MEA CULPA  ...

We May indeed like you claim at times indulge in Character Assassination be it in self defence ... "Adab Az Keh Amoukhteed ? Az Bee Adaban !"

However YOUR Friends in Tehran indulge in PURE MURDER :

Dialogue of murder:A cautionary tale that must not be Forgotten By Cyrus KADIVAR

So Good Luck with YOUR Historical Revisionism by the Way and the Holocaust Denials of the Islamic Kind ! ...

Oh and Hamid Dabashi did not invent Good Television and the Iranian Art Scene either ...

And as a Good Friend of ours said elsewhere :

"Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth"

It's all character assassinations with you people isnt it? Anyone who isnt a dear lover of Shah and at one point helped topple the despot dictator is bad news that needs to have his character attacked by shah loving internet warriors.

No better than the Islamists in power who like to claim everyone who opposes their bankrupt ideology is a foreign agent.

But of course, no hard feelings Darius jaan. Good luck with your Project for Iranian Monarchy. ;)

What I love about Hamid Dabashi ... ;0)

by Darius Kadivar on

Is how he manages to give himself Credit for other people's accomplishments. ;0)

Even if he does not say it himself, he manages to make Shirin Neshat say that Dabashi originally gave her the idea of making the movie and giving it the political twist that was not initially in Parsipur's novel.

I guess Dabashi the Champion of the Palestinian cause and who hopes to become the New Edward Said by Re Inventing Orientalism under the Shi'it Cloak is also Responsible for the Green Movement's uprising in Iran ...

I am sure his Dear Friend George Galloway who hosts a Program on Press TV will appreciate and even invite him to speak ...
