Vote for 2009 Miss Universe Canada contestants

Vote for one of the 6 beautiful Iranian Canadian contestants competing for the title of Miss Universe® Canada 2009. The competition will take place at The Metro Toronto Convention Centre's John Bassett Theatre in Toronto. The Preliminary competition will be on Thursday May 14th @ 8:00pm and the Final Show and Crowning on Saturday May 16th @ 7:30pm.

Tannaz Alesafar: AGE: 24 | HEIGHT: 5'10" | HOMETOWN: VANCOUVER, BC. Tannaz was born in Iran and moved to Canada as a teenager; and is grateful for the opportunity to live in this wonderful Country. She is bilingual in Farsi and English and is currently in her last semester in Simon Fraser University completing a B.A of Communication and Mass Media. In the future she’s eager to further her education in a Masters Program of Communication and hopes to work in the media and entertainment industry>>>VOTE

Neda Derakhshan: AGE: 25 | HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: CALGARY, AB. Neda is 25 years old and was born in Iran. She moved to Canada at the age of 13 with her parents and 3 younger brothers. Tara Mobayen: AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'7" | HOMETOWN: TORONTO, ON. Tara was born in Shiraz, Iran and moved to Canada as a teenager to settle in Toronto, Ontario where doors of opportunities opened. She began her modeling career at the age of 17 and is currently studying at the University of Toronto, where she is double majoring in Human Biology and Astrophysics. Tara is the youngest of 3 siblings, is fluent in English and Farsi and holds a certificate in Cosmetology. I like "Persian" better than "Farsi", but sometimes there are practical reasons to use "Farsi", over "Persian".

For example:

 You are an Iranian, visiting the U.S.  In a case of mistaken identity, you are picked up, and charged with a serious crime. You don't speak much English. The court provides you with a form, where you can ask for an interpreter. Let's say the administrative office of the court shares your view, and has "Persian" listed, and not "Farsi".

  On the day of trial, where you have to give testimony, you find out your interpreter is from Afghanistan, and he, too, speaks Persian!

  And furthur assume, your case involves a potato, a car, a cat, and swimming, and some money. You talk about seebzameenee, and he doesn't understand. Maasheen, he doesn't know. Gorbeh? What the hell is that? Shenaa? Haa? Pool? What?

( Our persian speaking Afghan brothers and sisters,  call potato, kachaaloo, car, mowtar, cat, peeshak, and swimming, aab-baazee, money ,paysah!)

 Would you want that? Would you feel you are afforded an interpreter who can effectively provide translation between you and the court, when you have so much at stake?

  And if they say, "you asked for Persian interpreter, and we gave you Persian interpreter", what would you say? What do you propose to resolve this issue?

 I have dealt with this issue a few times. To avoid the confusion, the office that I deal with, calls our language "Farsi", and the Afghans', "Dari".

Dear Mamnoon, Farsi or Persian?

Do you know the importance of using the right name for our language? Our language is Persian not Farsi. We use Farsi when we write or speak in Farsi(Persian) but when writing or speaking in English the correct name is PERSIAN and not Farsi. It is important to do so, Why? Ba az been bordaneh naameh Persian har ja keh betavaanand ta nameh Kaleeg fars ra ham betavaanand rahaattar avaz konand. Unfortunately many Iranians don't see and realize the Plot made by Iran's enemies and even they help them to achieve their goal with "nadaanee". It is so important that even Mullahs in Iran now use the name Persian more frequently: Persian Pipe Line etc. I hope we, all of us, understand it too!
